Is Jesus adding to the Law, contradicting it, or intensifying it? Is being angry with your brother or calling him “Empty Head” a form of murder? Where does Jesus stand on the question of divorce, and how do his teachings compare with the teaching of 1st c. Judaism in general? How does Jesus shift the woman-centered attention in the OT regarding adultery to a focus on what the man does or desires? Is it OK to take an oath in a court of law or does Christ forbid even that? These and other questions Chad Bird addresses in this week’s Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes on Matthew 5:21-37.

Another KZfaqr recommended The Christ Key to me, and since then I have got most of your books. You write and speak thoughtfully, prosaically (which is not a bad thing) but never pedantically. Thank you so much for this teaching. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your videos on Matthew (and all else!).

Matthew 22 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

It literally just hit me that these 6 intensifications are just for the laws that apply to our relationships with other humans. Doesn’t even address our transgressions against God. 🤯

Bible Project just did SOTM and has a more differnt and better take than Rev Bird does here.... It makes more sense that Jesus , who is introducing "the Kingdom at Hand" is developing the concept of Right Relationships - which will be the standard in this Sky Kingdom. Its not about punnishment.. its about Relationships.

I have heard it said that Jesus preached the "Law on Steroids" to reveal the need for Him, the Savior. And that makes sense. I also find it unfortunate that the verse about divorce has been utilized by clergy against abused women which then keeps them shackled to their partners.

This is true, there is an interesting translation from Malachi that is traditionally used to discourage divorce, the scripture gave divorce because of hatred and abuse. Chapter 2 14 Yet you say, ‘Why?’ Because Yahweh has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, though she is your companion, and the wife of your covenant. 15 Did he not make you one, although he had the residue of the Spirit? Why one? He sought godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let no one deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. 16 For if you hate and divorce”, says Yahweh, the God of to Israel, “they cover my garment with violence!” says Yahweh of Armies. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you don’t deal treacherously. 17 And you have wearied God with your words. Yet you say, ‘How have we wearied him?’ In that you say, ‘Everyone who does evil is good in Yahweh’s sight, and he delights in them;’ or ‘Where is the God of justice?’

I believe what Christ is seeking for us to understand during His sermon on the Mount is how the Father is Spirit, which means we must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. Christ expounds on this during His meeting with the Samaritan woman at the well, when He said: “God is spirit, and his worshipers MUST worship in the Spirit and in truth.” John 4:24 Notice how Christ doesn’t say that we might, could or should worship in the Spirit and Truth, He says we MUST! This is because following religion, any religion, including; Christianity and Judaism will only sanctify our flesh or what Paul calls the circumcision of our flesh and the works of the Law. Religion is all about checking boxes and building our faith in our own faithfulness to fulfill our religious rituals and traditions. But the Father seeks the heart! A careful reading of Matthew 5 would indicate that only the disciples received these instructions and not the masses. And His disciples came to Him and He taught them. This is why the term brother is used so often. God goes deeper with those who are committed to Him. Got Torah Got Truth

I disagree. The words “these sayings” in Matt. 7:28 imply a continuous declaration. Matthew is saying that the crowds heard all of this teaching, from chapter 5 to the end of 7.

Incorrect. The Sermon on the Mount is from Mathew chapter 5 to chapter 7. He was talking to not only his disciples but the crowd if people as well. Mathew 5:1-2" 1When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain and sat down. His disciples came to Him, 2and He began to teach them, saying:" Mathew 7:28-29 "28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, 29because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their scribes."

In the 2nd written gospel that made it in the canon, Matthew 5 : 18 (KJ), it specifically states that so long as Heaven and Earth exist the laws shall be maintained: “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” Has nothing to do with this but interesting, the word “jot” by the way is an 18th century German transliteration mistake

You're the one saying because these walked in Righteousness had no need of Messiah....these looked to their Messiah for their sin debt...b)ut they walked in Faith and Obedience to the Word of YAHUAH ELOHYIM. Faith exercised brings the soul into union with Elohyim in Messiah and inevitably produces Righteousness of Life, by conforming to the will of Elohyim, it has always been the same for OT and NT. Hi Chad, can you, or do you have a lecture on 2CV. I’m an illustrator and have not made any further illustrations of Jesus because many reformed camps say it’s a 2CV, equivalent to making an of the golden calf that people may worship as an image of the Lord. Now I don’t illustrate icons l, but narratives in the Bible. I also noted that even in the Holy of Holies, graven images of Cherubim appear a top the Mercy Seat and other natural things engraved in the accessories. Isn’t it more the action of worshipping the graven images that is forbidden and not the graven images themselves?

My biggest struggle with this is the fact that temptation isn't sin, and resisting temptation is not doing the bad thing you'd like to do, but this seems to express that wanting to do sin will be judged to the same extent as committing the sin which leads to my confusion.

Similar language is used in other psalms as well, of course. This is David confessing that, in imitatio Dei, he is aligning himself with the Lord, who stands opposed (hates) the wicked. So, the phrase תַּכְלִ֣ית שִׂנְאָ֣ה שְׂנֵאתִ֑ים is the epitome of this.

In Mark 10:11 there is no exception clause. "And he said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her". So I understand that Jesus is not siding with the school of Shamai but along with the spirit of Matthew 5 is intensifying the meaning of the law. I think it is reasonable to understand that Jesus is meaning by pornea (zanah) illegal marriages such as incestuous ones like King Herod. Or like when Ezra forced the men to put away their foreign wives. Jesus is therefore saying there is no excuse, except for the illegal marriage which is by law void anyway. This might also parallel the decision in Acts 15 when the council requested the gentile believers to refrain from pornea, which should be obvious unless referring specifically to the forbidden union laws of the Leviticus together with the laws about blood and that polluted by idols (meat?)

My husband and I started out with cheating on his wife. I didn't follow Jesus correctly at the time. I did tell him I would only be with him if he divorced his wife and he did. Are we living in sin on purpose since the way we started was by adultery?

We have to receive the grace of God in our presently broken situation. In your case, you both broke the covenant of marriage, but now it is most likely unreasonable to think all the wrongs can be undone or corrected. It is not so simple as returning stolen goods. You obviously are aware of your error. Find grace in God as you confess your sins and with the grace of God continue to follow a better path in your present marriage than you did in the past.

Let's get this straight now and out of the way! The so called exception clause in Matthew is not unfaithfulness in marriage. Matthew is writing to a "Jewish" audience. This clause is not found in the Gospel of Luke. Deuteronomy 22 makes it very clear that this is dealing with the accusation against Mary in the Incarnation of the LORD! Any other reason other than no blood on the sheets the night of a man's wedding is not a clause of exception. Any man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery! Period!
