Everything in your narration here is excellent, but I appreciate your in-depth discussion of kata. At first I worked on Nage No Kata for my belt test, but the more I worked at kata, the more I began to see and feel my weaknesses is standing randori. Did not work enough on Ju No Kata and others to comment, but I did notice that our younger students who had practiced Ne Waza also via kata were often dominant in randori as well. I think it is perhaps a question of muscle memory through structured repetition.

Another thing I want to bring up is that Kata stores information. Of course in this day and age you can make a video or look a technique up on youtube. But kata is more an intrinsic storage medium. You can't store the alignment, the breathing, the feel of kuzushi in avideo. That's where kata comes in. That is why kata is still important today for people who know what to find out of it.

Very interesting. Many thanks :) On the subject of solo forms - I have studied since early childhood (now 62) and in my experience, forms training is very useful indeed! Obviously partner training is essential but forms can be of great benefit, especially if the practitioner has a lot of partner training experience and utilises good visualisation (which helps with distance management).

@@Chadi To be honest, I think many modern instructors don't teach the concept of forms correctly, thus there is a disconnect between the forms and fighting.They tend to teach the form as a set of movements that the student has to memorise, and then, hopefully (at some point in the future) the meaning of the form may be revealed. However, when I teach a form, I take a particular technique (from the form) and break it down. We practice it with partners and thoroughly digest it. Then, we move on to the next technique, and so on. After all this, the student has something to practice when alone, with a full understanding of the context.

Great video man, the structure of a big federation always kind of ensures an homogeneous practice. As for Aikido what I saw that happens is that most of the masters don't return to the source and they do what it feel best for them but that's an adaptation for a technical error you are doing on the kata, when mi sensei traveled to Japan he saw this and understood that we get Telephone game en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_(game) and by the when the technique is being teach to us we get the wrong version this doesn't happen with judo that much because you can always validate with randori

I wonder if Okinawan Uechi Ryu wouldn't be the best self defense focused kara te for Judoka, since Uechi Ryu uses the more practical upright stance, just as Judo utilizes, and Uechi Ryu training is heavy on hojo undo strengthening of joints and finger grip which would benefit Judoka. And the unprotected hand strikes of Uechi Ryu focus upon the rule of soft to hard & hard to soft, perfecting the foul strikes to the most vulnerable anatomical targets.

Kata in striking arts aren't only tthere as a form of "shadow boxing" that's why a loaaaood of application don't make sense and a lot of people say Karate dont work. Kata in Karate gives you the curriculum and a strctured trainigplan. Oldschool styles only have a few katas but they learn them thourughly. The newe "modern" styles like shotokan have more. Especially the "colour belt" kata give you concepts to learn more than "strike A", strike B and strike C. If you know the intended application(S) it teaches you how to deal with specifc things, strategy, tactics etc. It gives you a gampkan or roadmap so to speak IF you know the bunkai AND OF COURSE this all can only work if you train it correctly. thats why in karate there is kata- kihin and kumite. In striking arts, the old school ones a kata is the whole system. This is especially true for chinese styles.

Haha, yeah there's plenty of two person drilling and sparring in "traditional" karate. We don't sacrifice that for solo kata practice. Or at least any place that's good won't!
@BFerreira82
@BFerreira82 3 жыл бұрын
You made a good point. But as I see it... The problem with Karate Katas is exactly the Bunkai. You said (and I agree) : " If you know the intended apllication..." Well that is exactly the problem with Karate. They have structure, curriculum but ... very shady interpretations of the various Katas and it's Bunkai. It's left to chance. In Judo Katas you know what and why you are drilling something. You can add your own interpretations of it... Adapt techniques... But you do know what and why you do it. Not in Karate !
@alLEDP
@alLEDP 3 жыл бұрын
@@BFerreira82 You are right. That is problem. It's like learning to cook in another language or wit hieroglyphs. You have to first decipher them before you can understand then before you can learn them before you can train them and at last apply in an non cooperative situation.
@alLEDP
@alLEDP 3 жыл бұрын
@@BFerreira82 But I am confident that people like Iain Abernathy, Jesse "The Karate Nerd" Enkamp or Patrick McCarthy do an AMAZING job (at least here in the west) to decipher the INTENDED bunkai based on historical eveidences like texts and newspaper reports etc., logic and an open mind. Reconstructing the whole system which make sense in itself instead of "translating" only sentences of a cooking book to stay with the analogy. I suggest you check out their youtube channel (and PODCAST!). They are gems in the broad ocean of mediocre internet-karate-bunkai videos!
@alLEDP
@alLEDP 3 жыл бұрын
@@BFerreira82 For example a loaaad of kata starts to the left. Iain Abernathy points out that if you look at the crime statstics at leas in the UK the most common injury is some hematome or breaking of the left eye bone sockel (I dont remember the correct name but you get the point). thats because statistically most people are right handed and therefore you can assume in the kata that an haymaker will come from your left side, his right side. Therefore shifting to the left in relation to the opponent/uke makes sense and is thaugt in nearly all beginner kata (heian series).

The gloves in Nippon Kenpo appear to be closed gloves, which will further inhibit one’s ability to grip (in addition to the armor over the lapel). Gloves in MMA are open with the fingers exposed to allow for better gripping.

Yes there are more opened of a classic boxe glove in order to grip arm, forearms and legs. So you could make your throws your opponent and sometimes make a shoulder joint lock (juju gatame is possible to be performed). By the way into tournament only shoulder joints lock are authorised. Elbow joint lock could be performed only on juji gatame because you could have full control of this technique. Regulation on elbow joint lock is for to have safe fight.

Despite sharing a name, all the various styles of kenpo/kempo are different martial arts. Many aren't really associated at all. Some have a common origin but not all, namely shorinji and Nippon kempo which are completely unrelated to American types of kenpo. They're not different branches of the same tree (so to speak) as is the case with kodokan/kosen judo. Maybe that could be said of the American styles of kenpo but certainly not all.
@retroghidora6767

To make a long story short, Karate is heavily influenced by (or outright mainly) kung fu. So many styles of karate reference this origin in their name. This is how u get all the kempo's and shorinji's (which means shaolin, as one of styles of kung fu that make up most karate styles was Monk Fist Boxing) As a matter of fact karate wasnt always called karate, it's original name Tote or Tode (I've also seen it spelled Toudi) means "China hand"

I think they should reintroduce the Yoko actually. Too many lousy and almost unsuccessful throws gets a Waza-ari, and to many throws that don't comply with the definition of an Ippon, scores an Ippon. It would also open up for some more ne-waza since they would more often would go down and keep up the attack, not just assuming that it was an Ippon. It would be good for sport Judo. Also, karate strikes are definitely no guarantee for a KO. Ippon throws is something real. Ippon strikes are nonsense.
@henrikg1388
@henrikg1388 3 жыл бұрын
@SPlinter Echelon Yes mainly, but almost all karate styles have basic punching techniques that are way to static, you keep the other hand at the hip, and teaches blocking like "wax on-wax off". Then maybe they move to a more boxing-style when in semi- or full-contact competition. But the basics are just silly. And even if you are a boxer and punch somebody with some martial arts training, it pretty hard to score a one punch KO. Throwing somebody outside a soft floor like mats, is much worse and will stun you at least. It could even be lethal unless you hold back.
