This guy is remarkable...maybe as accomplished as I’ve ever heard and generous to give his time to teaching.....but so far above anyone who simply wants to play for fun. He might as well have been speaking a foreign language. If I watched this before I ever started playing sax, I never would have picked up the horn. For the 99.9% of Sax players who don’t aspire to be a Pro or get a PhD in music, you might also want to search “BetterSax” with Jay Metcalf. Very informative and relevant.

What a great lesson, would be cool to have a video going into detailed argumentation for the scale and chord selections, i guess you gave us a touch of that in the begining where you showed the 3 descending tones

This is why Chad is a beast - other videos are like "minor 251 explained!!" and spend 5 minutes defining a half-diminished chord... Chad is straight in to b9 vs. nat9 AND gems like "they both sound good", what a great teacher. Edit: some other observations: - if you like thinking in melodic minor, you can play the minor third melodic minor on the iim7b5 (e.g. G melodic on Em7b5) which gives you the E locrian nat 2. You can play the melodic minor a half step up from the V (e.g. Bb melodic on A7) which gives you the A altered scale. And then the diatonic melodic on the I (which gives you the natural 7 so might clash with a I-7 if not careful, idk). - You can sub the Vm7b5 for a Vmin6/9 by playing say D major over an Em7b5, this gives you the nat 2 (F#), nat 13 (C#) and 5 (B) which might clash with the chord but Dexter Gordon does it on There Will Never Be Another You and it sounds cool...

Chad Coltraine; Yes, that's right ... I'm a 80-year-old violero, I'm very interested in the review I would say, of the scales or `` paths '' to take in each modulation; but we beg you please, if these can be slow, slowly without speed things that we can somehow by `` escaping from the score '' take a clear idea of the phrases outside the common ones already known again ... very grateful , chad ... you are a blessed man with your sax ... bravo !!! tito

Fun fact: Donna Lee came out in 1947 and has a ♮9 over a ø7 chord in measure 21 of the head. So anybody who claims that you should always play a ♭9 on ø7 chords is literally 70+ years behind the times. (I mean, anybody who claims you should *always* do anything a certain way is probably putting all kinds of unhealthy limitations on their life.)

What the natural 2nd on the ii (should we say raised 2nd because locrian is diatonic) but what the natural 2nd does is allow one to delay the return to the major scale family on the one chord.

Hi Chad! you're my favourite now adays saxophone player together with Gahsam Bathamuntu form N.Y. okay I would have expected for most meodic option: Locrion #2 altered and Tonic minor(meldoic Minor) other option I would like to hear is Dm7 or C/D E7b9/G Cm69(maj) so a descending F-E-Eb Triad but fast resoving to Gtriad in Cm69 in Corner Stone or Hybrid Bossa this is happening I guess EFGG#BbCD (D#)-MUpoint E is E phrygian added raised or major 3 over a G7 octa...This was what Herbie hancock used to play...)I am a piano player...)

Love your channel. So good. It’s worth mentioning that the “secret combination” could be thought of as playing C Nat minor on the 2m chord and then C Melodic Minor on the V and i chords. (Of course, outlining chord tones as you go). For me thinking this way is simpler.... just think C minor with b6 and b7 on the Dm7b5 and then natural 6 and 7 on the G7 and Cm. Oops... Commented to soon. You basically said summed up my comment above at the end. Haha.

I think it is used just to play outside. Over an altered dominant you can play almost anything you want if you resolve it well to the I chord. It seems is just replacing iidim7 V7b9 and just use over there two tense sounding pentatonics a half tone apart so you feel the resolution on the Im7 chord.
@axeman2638
@axeman2638 4 жыл бұрын
it's all about how the line leads and the tension and release in the harmonic rhythm, because of the impending resolution to the 1 when playing over a dominant 7th. you can basically play anything over a 5 chord as long as you resolve it when the 1 chord comes

I noticed two errata in your pdfs, in the 10 Jazz Warmup Exercises measure 1141 is a repeat of measure 1129, and in the scales packet, the last ascending pattern on Exercise 4 of the Alt. 7s, there's a whole step on beat 3, (a natural 4th scale degree). Not to say these haven't been helpful, I'm already getting more fluid in my fingers. Just please fix these for future customers :)
