I live close to where this happened. It is an extremely shallow portion of the Mississippi. There is a large canal nearby that boats use to get around it. This individual ignored the canal signs and tried to drive through the low rocky water and had to be rescued.

It's possible he just lost power at the wrong moment.... you likely wouldn't be able to drop anchor and hold ground with that current. Looked like a nice boat. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't eventually just get loose and bump down thru the rest of the rocks. Could have been light damage to to the hull, or none. I doubt the boat would sink to the bottom though.

I grew up (1956-1980) just a few miles from The Chain of Rocks and know this well. I can recall how nervous it made me driving across the river on that NARROW bridge that had a bend in the middle. How in hell did that yacht get to the Rocks?

The boat stuck on the Chain of Rocks in the Mississippi River is gone but it's unclear where it went. Officials with the Port Charles Harbor say they went out to try and find it but were unsuccessful. They say it must have sunk. The only thing that was recovered was the dinghy.Oct 25, 2021

Obviously the water is not deep enough there for it to sink. And if it broke up there should still be remnants of it, like the 6000lb lead alloy keel, that under no circumstances could be carried from the spot by the water.

Obviously the community as a whole didnt care or moniter it as she slipped away into oblivion , in Minnesota that wouldn't have happened sad end .. but navigational error does have a price . Charts are free online .

When you live on a river you always have to be careful that your boat may get loose from its mooring. Someone could release the boat in malice because they don't like you or just of form of vandalizing.

Very very very true and sound advice , this particular gentleman is said to have missed a large sign speaking of the severe danger ahead , we sailed through the great lakes and was imparitive you read a waterway guide and charts, that was before internet . We previously sailed lake peppin on the beautiful mighty Mississippi .stay Safe sailing ☺

Sad because you can tell this boat was outfitted for a long term cruise in the gulf or the Carib when his voyage got cut real short by this rather obvious navigation error. Maybe it's a good thing that he didn't make it out to the big water, he may have not been ready mentally. Read your charts!

Why doesn't this boat have a jibsul foredecks scallywag? (main mast) . Does anyone know what happened? No skipper could be stupid enough to sail into this hazard. It must have become unmoored
@douglashurd8652
@douglashurd8652 2 жыл бұрын
Dropped the mast goin all the way to the gulf , obviously didn't check the water way site as he missed a large sign speaking of the severe danger ahead and missed the cut that ia always used . Seemed the captain was REALLY sleepin at the wheel . I sailed all the great lakes and lake peppin on the Mississippi and we always had our guide and a chart out .

Couple was motor cruising from Michigan to Gulf of Mexico. I assume their mast was shipped ahead to the Gulf. The boat came loose and sank the night after I shot this video when storms raised the water level several feet.

Actually the mast was dropped , as a common , absolute procedure for many sailboats going to the sourhern hemisphere via Mississippi river , it a trip for advanced yatchtsmen , as the great lakes is also if you want to go to year round sailing areas , you would have to drop the mast going through the erie canal also , going out the st. Lawrence river has tall bridges as all the connecting great lakes do too , the Mississippi bridges are cleared for a certain height tugboats , but not excessive mast heights.
