Thanks Deane. Thanks, Rob. Thank you for uploading all these wonderful old segments. Like so many Australians my age (late 40s), The Curiosity Show was an important part of my youth. I was very impressed with this segment when I saw it on television as a boy, and have described the experiment to different people many, many times over the years. It's a brilliant experiment; such a profoundly simple way to demonstrate the compounding effect of a fission reaction and just how much energy is released so rapidly. I'm so happy to have got to see this segment again.

I was thinking that the control rods in a nuclear reactor could be presented as sticky rods (covered by some glue, double sided tape). Some of the flying "neutrons" can be caught, hence slowing down the reaction.

Sure, there are times and people that would love to have all the elaborate details and workings, but you making it so simple to understand is totally awesome. There's been times in the past that I have been into something, but no matter how hard I try I can't manage to fully understand. Some of the time of I had these videos you make would have saved months or years of wondering or reading and asking and sometimes still not being able to understand like I want to. The countdown as heard from American ears: "Tein, Noine, Oight, Seyvan, Seex, Foive, Foa, Thrayee, Tow, Wunn, Zero". Love these old science videos! Simple experiments to explain complex concepts. The target is for kids, but they don't dumb down the information or speak in a patronizing so many kids shows do now.

Gee, thanks that was a nice simple and easy to digest method explaining the principle behind nuclear energy. It's such a shame it can be so disastrous if not managed properly. Oh and how many times did you catch your fingers setting the aquarium up? ;-)
@CuriosityShow
@CuriosityShow 8 жыл бұрын
+tendarb Thanks for your comments. I frequently do this as a live demonstration in my school science shows and, on a few occasions, have accidentally set off the chain reaction when inserting the last mousetrap. With the lid open, the ping pong balls fly all over the room. The kids love it!! On one occasion, I launched a water-powered rocket which hit the ceiling, bounced back on an angle straight into the aquarium, triggering the chain reaction. A spectacular accident. The kids thought I did it on purpose! Deane.

I once saw film of a setup like that aquarium, but with some ridiculous number of mousetraps in a good sized room -- hundreds of traps. The whole room went in less than three seconds. Now multiply the speed of the reaction by a billion or more, and shrink each mousetrap by a factor of a billion trillion, and you're around somewhere close to a real chain reaction in a bomb core.

So since this episode we’ve discovered that electron paths are more of a fog than the orbital paths that we were taught. So to break it down, suppose for this example that the nucleus you are studying is the size of an average Volkswagen Bug and is located in Kansas. The electron could be in Vegas one second only to pop up In Baltimore the next second. No idea why tho.

A great demonstration in understanding chain reactions. I admit that science is not my strong point. However, when it was asked how many balls were needed to set off the 19 mouse traps and release 38 balls, I immediately thought that one ball would be sufficient. That seemed like a logical answer to me. After all, it is a cumulative effect. Glad to know that I was right.
