I bought one of these a couple years ago. I attached it to my 42cc Echo brush cutter. I used it on very thick blackberry brambles. It cut right through them. I used a chopping motion from the top down, nice and slow, so the chains would mulch everything rather than just cut at the base. Definitely got the job done. The only drawback I see is potential danger to the user. I wore thick chaps, leather boots, a long sleeved sweatshirt, leather arm sleeves for welding, thick leather gloves, an old dirt biking chest protector, and a safety helmet with a visor. I didn't want any metal coming back at me. And while cutting the brambles, I clipped an old metal pipe I couldn't see sticking up from the ground. It sent sparks flying. Thankfully it was winter and just after a rain. But, I must say this thing does work well.

This and similar products with linked metal cutting parts (eg chains) are banned in the EU and unless UK updates its legislation also in UK, This followed a fatal accident in Scotland where the end link of a chain flew off and severed the spinal cord in the neck of a person working away from the operation. Unlike plastic cords and hinged plastic blades the steel links have about 8 times the density and so at the same speed have 8 times the momentum if they are ejected, ie similar to a bullet. This is why only solid cutting blades (as on a brush cutting head) or plastic parts are allowed.

Well if it demand something from the user that`s obvious, but it should still be available for people with common sense. But a proper guard should be around it as if it comes loose it would be dangerous. Talking about dangerous chain saws are very dangerous but we still use them...

@@truxton1000 true , the brushcutter attachments do have guards around them , they basically do the same thing , chainsaws are different though its very rare a chainsaw chain actually breaks , they generally would just slide off the bar if they didn't have the correct tension , that's why proper protection is so important a car could be very dangerous if you ploughed into a crowd of people , its just about being safe and knowing what you are doing

@@causetheplumstasteyum7848 well said. On our estate we have large tracts of land that needs atleast 3 to 4 rounds weeding per year. With around 4-5 weed cutters operating. Since it's a hilly region the best option is this type of weeding machine. The bane of operation was the rope getting cut off too frequently and at times multiple machines stopped to fix the issues. I used a Jeeps accelerator cable instead of rope. It's almost a decade now and it still works without a problem. Yes, almost any machinery can be dangerous. Any accidents arising from them is a negligence on our part. A slip of a screw driver can be harmful or as many of us have experienced a hammered finger while nailing. I had my share of hammered fingers 😂😂😂

I had a similar chain trimmer head back in the 90’s. The chain was smaller and not doubled. It would cut the saplings down. I almost cut down a fiberglass streetlight pole trimming the grass around it. Edging was great. One problem. The edging around concrete would wear the chain down and it would sling pieces of metal at high speed. I could never find a replacement head. I figured the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled the product, UNTIL NOW. It has been resurrected and improved.

Using something like this would be a disaster waiting to happen if you're in an area where you are cutting where the ground is not "organic dirt", but is silica sand. Steel discs that are made with chainsaw segments around the edge were found to start flying off the disc, as the sand destroyed the rivet heads that were keeping the teeth attached to the steel discs.

im a certified Stihl technician and i can tell you this will void any warranty and safety is not guaranteed by Stihl. an FS model is defiantly not going to handle that for to long. a KM Model might hold up, however stihl offers safer possibly more effective head attachments. run one of these tools in to your leg one time and suddenly safety is all you want to talk about.. take it from someone who knows.. there is also operational procedures Stihl would like Operators to be aware.. in the case of Weed Wackers and Brush wackers (FS and KM) one thing is angle of cut.. that concerns me with the chin idea is what is the correct angle of cut to prevent kick back? Hopefully the manufacture of the Chain wacker shares its Safety testing information Regardless, once you put a non Stihl head on your Stihl like the video creator did you are on your own. the liability is your own completely

Performances are indeed very good on a simple surface (with absence of hard rocks and glass bottles). User Warning notice: Downsides of Chain trimmer head: - When the chain holder is not attached properly, it can detach at a very high speed, thus causing damage to your body parts (legs) - When a user doesn't look after the chain cautiously, when breakage occurs, the length of the chain can rip your legs severely. - If entering in contact with rocks or glass, the debris projected at such a speed can damage your body. The helmet will not be sufficient to assure protection of the face or eyes with such impacts, as rocks, metal and glass will be able to pierce through conventional grilled helmets. A helmet made of reinforced polycarbonate is advised. A body armor or a braided suit is advised. - Note that the wieght of the chain will affect the consumption of the fuel by 20% at least, and will make your engine work by over 20% as well. Be advised that only cautious and informed users should use such advanced methods for trimming.

I call bs on that, i know a thing or two about how energy is transferred and with one single linkage/universal joint the torque/energy is lowered to less than 30%, these machines have 3 or 4 linkages. Plus the links in your arm to absorb the energy, that thing could stop dead and you would barely feel it let alone it break bones

Because bigger chance to fail and bigger mortal danger to bystanders if they fail. chains have moving parts and are made for cutting not hitting, and are heavier than line cutter line. This is a good concept, it's about using the right tool for the right job, just like nylon wire is for grass cutting and blades for thick vegitation etc. its application should only be used for overgrown grass etc, i doubt it can be used with thick vegitation as it might either damage the machine or get tangled more often since its less flexible and thicker, if it also came with a clear platic sheild to fit the front end it would be alot safer aswell since anything it hits, for eg a pebble, it will fly with atleast 20× more force. Another downside is It will damage anthing soft like paint, water pipes, plants and fence's where this machine is actualy more handy.

you know what works even better? two edger blades and it will cut anything, the city workers had them like this 30 plus years ago and one of the guys took one home to clean up his fence line of sapling trees and it worked great, so great that when he got a little tired he cut his leg clean off and fell over because it happened so fast he didn't even know it was gone. There is a reason they use plastic string on these.

Oh, wow. Now I have a way to get more out of my chains from my chainsaw. The extra weight would act as a flywheel capturing inertia/momentum. The energy it has would make very short work of heavy brush. Just don't work around pipes, concrete, rain gutters, or the siding of your house. I would have a metal guard and shin guards on. Along with steel toe boots with tarsal guards.

Best trimmer I've ever used was a RedMax with a homemade adapter for a carbide table saw blade. That thing could edge, trim bushes and trees, cut down saplings of any size, and even grind stumps down even below grade.

I have some old carbide 10" or 12" miter saw blades I've been meaning to try. The only thing holding me up is a memory. I started cutting yards at 9yrs old. A buddy was helping one day and he was pulling his push mower backwards. I just happened to look up as his foot slipped under the mower. Someone had to be looking over him because he had on steel toed boots. Anyway a split second after it went the mower it flew up in the air with him still attached. It just happened I'd made him raise the cutting height up all the way. The blade hit the top of the steel toe and through his foot out some how. That one incident got my attention and saved me a lot of times.

@@billtipp1699 You reminded me of several things with that...when I was just 10 or 11I was in a small engine repair class (extracurricular) and my neighbor was standing against a vehicle while the old man instructor was running a freshly fired up and blade sharpened mower. His feet slipped and one foot slid under that mower and WAADINNG! It cut all his toes in half sideways 😳😬 Also keep in mind the RedMax edger was modified by me to have a metal blade guard and custom insert that kept that blade centered and balanced. I used it on a job for an entire decade cleaning up overgrown foreclosed properties which we would prepare for sale. I probably only went through 4 blades in all those years and never lost a single saw tooth. That thing was the most useful fabricobbled tool in history 😆. I named it the gas powered machete.

Not at all. Its just not good for business once a chain snaps off and kills either your client, your clients kids and or yourself. Walking within a 100m radius of anyone using this device is playing russian roulette with your life. These things should be illegal to sell, along with home made bombs.

@@CA34562 You know my Suzuki GSX-R 1000 has a chain that spin thousand of time faster right next to half of my left leg. I haven't had a problem even when I've taken it up to 180mph along with many millions of other people who own chain-driven motorcycles as well. I own tools that are way more dangerous than that little tiny weed wacker will ever be. Such as my table saw spinning almost 4,000 RPM! I've seen a person cut his hands clear off. My grinder and Skil Circular Saw is also way more dangerous. My uncle had one kickback and cut his collar bone and also a dear friend whom my family grew up with had a Skil saw kickback when it hit a knot in the wood and cut halfway through his Thigh. So don't talk to me about tools safety. I myself have been using them since I was a kid so more than 45 years.

@꧁RadicalRick꧂ a chain running around a sprocket in a controlled fashion with no resistance is COMPLETELY different then a loose chain spinning around using centrifugal force to smash into any and all objects in its path. Honestly, the fact that you need to be told this is concerning.. If you can’t see how that’s a fatality waiting to happen. Then I don’t know what to tell you other then you’re the reason there’s a warning label informing people ‘not to hold the wrong end of the chainsaw’. All your examples are of machinery that’s suppose to be used in a controlled fashion and have had incidents resulting from human error. A spinning chain smashing into anything and everything CAN NOT be used in a controlled fashion, especially when what you’re clearing can’t even be seen until it’s already cleared. For someone who’s 50+ years old. Shame on you and your lack of intelligence. Do better.

@@CA34562 For your information, you will never in 100 lifetimes be as intelligent as me. Not only did I get a perfect score on my SAT in high school. I also score over 180 on my IQ test, which is higher than Albert Einstein. I Qualified for Mensa(something you probably have no clue what it is). And I've never lost a game of Checker nor Tic-tac-toe to a computer. I Won two years in a row in a Checker and Backgammon tournament. Only, in the game of Chess, and GO does the computer kick my butt as it does pretty much anyone in the world. I'd be shocked if you even graduated from high school. Because you sure don't sound like you did. If you are ever up for some Speedcubing or Chess, let me know, and we'll see just how educated you are.
