Chained Echoes: A Resounding Love Letter To 16-Bit RPGs

We play a lot of RPGs here at FrameWork, and we really love RPGs made by people who love RPGs themselves. Chained Echoes is that kind of game. Developer Matthias Linda wanted to create something that hearkened back to the Super Nintendo-era RPGs he played growing up.
So what’s the end result? In this spoiler-free video, we dive into what makes this game tick. By looking through the lenses of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6, we can better understand the references and party composition in Chained Echoes. Linda also made it a point to expound on these mechanics, creating some truly fantastic battle mechanics.
If you’re interested in playing Chained Echoes yourself, you have plenty of options. It’s available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, Nintendo Switch (where we played it), and PC via Steam.

I really hope Mathias gives us more games set in Eldrea. Theres so much we've yet to see, like the fungus-consumed Galtena, the homeland of the Baki, or the story behind the mysterious Masked Man. I definitely want to see more of this world, regardless of the timeline or specific characters.

Clicked on this because I wanted a fun, not super critical look at the game, and I am happy I did. This video was refreshing, and the format is fun. Please keep up the good work.

I don't think I've ever fallen so hard for a game since I played Lisa the Painful many, MANY years ago, and that's my current favorite game of all time. Given a bit more time I could definitely see Chained Echoes taking that spot. I genuinely don't have a single gripe with the game aside from the fact that I wish the skill board was bigger so you don't get into the "i already have every skill i want so i'm just gonna pick random stuff that i might situationally use maybe but probably not ever" situation in the late game.

Like the Grandia series the battle system stands out.. I just started but I’m definitely glad I added this gem to the collection

PLEASE Support games like this, priced well, no online always, no store, just a quality game made by people who love the jrpg genre. I love this game. Sea of Stars is just as amazing too

The Maelstrom is a clear reference to the Lifestream from FF7.

Man, chained echoes is a masterpiece. I love this game so much! I know you touched on it, but never have I seen a game come so close Square's best work. The whole game is like that! From combat, story, dialog, art direction, map design, and music; every part made me feel the way I did playing the classics as a kid

Well u mentioned Glenn but forgot Lenne, which shares the same name as the Queen whom Frog/Glenn serves in Chrono Trigger.

Didn't forget, we just cut that bit out of the script (along with some other references). Personally we also pronounce them differently - "lean" vs "len," but that might just be us. Gives fans a reason to comment lol.

Chained Echoes is great, if you like JRPGs just buy it, you won't regret it, I promise.

Ienjoyed this one but I stopped playing when they were pushing the mech combat which I did not like one bit. You can only play a few characters and the mech stuff is just really unengaging and basic
