This foot stool is made from a piece of spectacularly spalted maple, from the branch of a tree cut down beside my house.
It took one very long day to finish it, from first cut with the chainsaw in the morning, to the last coat of oil in the evening.

I share tha same admiration and concern expressed by others: without some form of reinforcement isn't this very beautiful crosscut seat highly likely to crack and split -- even without abuse.

Thank you so much for all you do. I am disabled and lost a lot of self confidence when I could no longer work. . Watching your videos inspired me to get my tools out and try building things again. I am so much happier now and feel so much better because I stopped looking at what I can't do and started doing things that I can. You are a real guy and that's one of the things I enjoy about your channel. You don't try to polish your image you just go with who you are. Thanks for being genuine and thanks for the humor. Keep doing what you are doing. You are a great inspiration.

"I lift my eyes to the mountains - from where will my help come? My help will come from the L-rd, Maker of heaven and earth." Ps 121 2-3 I suffer too. I'm 68 and I'm almost by myself. Many times I feel alone in the world and phically weak. My wrists ache, as well as my joints. But I look up. Then my strength comes from above. Thanks G-d we have good people to inspire us!!! Let's do what we can!

Great poems, great paintings, great melodies .... they all sort of came out in one go y'know, 'inspired' in one way or another. Some things come together as if they have a mind of their own - did you know what you were going to do when you went out or did you go out looking for ideas? Why'd you decide to 'carve' it rather than build something? This is one of those once in a lifetime things - it's an amazing piece of art that stool.

Nicely done, sir. This stool, to a certain degree shows us how people long ago would have made simple furniture for their home and kids. Of course the power saw made a one day affair, but the concept would have been the same. Enjoyed the video thanks.

I'm impressed, John. It is a beautiful stool and I think it is one of your finest projects. In my opinion, it takes a real love of wood and what you do with it to even attempt something like this stool from what many people might see as a piece of firewood.

That really came out great. It's cool to turn something out like this in a day. That way you have to just keep moving and not analyze it endlessly. Your creativity and a little luck with that grain pattern being uncovered made it into a beauty.
