Fun fact: Whitney's mother Cissy provided backing vocals on Chaka Khan's original 1978 version of "I'm Every Woman", and so Whitney decided to return the favor by having both her mother and Chaka cameo in the music video for her 1993 cover version, along with Valerie Simpson (one-half of Ashford and Simpson, the songwriting-production married couple behind the original song, who were also recording stars in their own right) and then-rising girl group TLC. Whitney also paid tribute to Chaka by proclaiming Chaka's name towards the end of the song.

@@JeffmChicago She was. Whitney, Chaka and Cissy said so themselves. She did provide backing vocals, though she was uncredited and unpaid, as her mother was showing her the ropes of the music industry.

@@andrewbloom7637 that's not true. Whitney and her mother sang on Chaka's Naughty album in 1980. Cissy also sang on Chaka's self titled debut album in 1978 , but not on this song. The only vocalists on this record are Chaka and Hamish Stuart. This rumor got started when Whitney recorded the song in 1992. But Chaka later cleared it up as well as Cissy's mother in her book. And there's no way Cissy Houston, the most sought out backing vocalist and arranger in the 60's through the 80's was going to allow herself or her daughter to sing on anyone's record for free. She is credited on the Chaka album and the Naughty album. Whitney tagged along with her to sing on a few tracks on the Naughty album too. Both are credited in the liner notes. You can check the original LP liner notes. And I'm certain Cissy had her daughter paid too. 1980 was the time when Whitney started singing professionally. She's got a few commerical jingles from that time too.

Actually they are not the real hero’s! though they wrote the song, the demo given to Chaka, sound nothing like what her finished recording sound! I have work with both Chaka Khan & ASHFORD & SIMPSON. I also had the privilege of hearing the original demo through R. I. P Arif Mardin! Chaka Khan’s Producer at the time. And had Chaka not sang and arranged the vocals the way she did. This song wouldn’t be what it is today. Even Whitney Houston said it herself, Chaka is credited for The vocal arrangements on Whitney version. Chaka has always had that magic when it came to making a regular song, into a masterpiece!

One of the greatest voices of all time. A massive voice with incredible range, soul, power, and feeling,. Music to climb mountains by. From of the “Clan of No Bad Notes”... Aretha, Ella, Sarah, Whitney. People forget, Chaka was also a beauty, with that face and body. Then you hear this voice, coming out of that face and body.... A legend of funk and soul greatness, in a class by herself, is Chaka Kahn.

When I was coming up Chaka took her talent for granted...she didn't know how fierce she was!!! Still a die heart fan for life! Love Chaka and still got my Sweet Thing album. HS class 1977

She was too young and not really groomed for the level of talent she had. She had more voice naturally than Whitney, but Whitney was trained to use her instrument better and went on to become the best. Chaka had that kind of potential too, but never fully capitalized it the way Whitney and others did.

This was the disco record of its day (70s), and for women dancing to this song, it was a "feel good" factor, and women felt at their best dancing to it, letting go and really dancing all over the dance floor, as I once did, and do years later whenever I hear it. Go Chaka!

She's been making music for more than 50 years and no sign of slowing down. Radio seems to have forgotten this one over the years. What a disservice to those who like songs like this. What a great beat and dance number.

Yes, I'm a Chakaholic. My first vinyl was Rags To Rufus. She's transcended Blues, Jazz, Pop, Funk, Disco, Big Band and guested on many other's joints....and still going. This classic is one of many hits written by the great Ashford & Simpson dynamic duo. If this song is all you know of her and STUCK on comparing this version to another great vocalist's version, the late great Whitney Houston, I recommend seeking out Chaka's huge catalog. Both Chaka Khan & Whitney Houston have contributed greatly to this vast industry and to minimalize their great talents to who's version of a song is better is 1 dimensional and a half eye on their overall artistry.
