Super Smash Bros Melee Is ruled by its top tiers, or so you might think! Today I want to tell you about a low tier and its main that destroyed and embarrassed a whole continent for years! This is the story of Leffen and his mewtwo and the people whos souls it claimed along the way.

It's kinda nuts that Europe's got relatively similar in driving times to the USA but you cross through so many countries, cultures, and languages, that the driving 18 hours to go to a major that makes sense in the States is pretty unreasonable across the Atlantic.

Alternatively, you could kick back and relax on a train pretty much the whole way there. As a Canadian I'm so envious of Europes extensive rail network. Actually, the rest of the developed worlds extensive rail network xD over here unless you live in *some* major metropolitan areas you pretty much require a car just to get around, it's awful.

In community college, I dominated with Mewtwo because NO ONE KNEW HOW TO PLAY AGAINST HIM. People knew the top tiers: Falco, Shiek, etc; but when it came to Mewtwo, no one knew how to deal with his kit because no one knew it and I switched it up a lot.

I’ve seen a lot of breakdowns of Melee Mewtwo; and most say he’s a glass cannon. He has some great frame data, one of the best projectiles, and huge early stock potential. As well as a lot of true combos and near-true combos reliant on DI. And even recovery mixups that are hard to read. Leffen, as much as he’s been a prick, has the skill to really bring out those highlights in a character deemed “low tier” and, just like AMSA with Yoshi, can dominate brackets with a character that most competitors don’t really know the matchup.

Mewtwo's one of about two or three characters who has all the right things to be a solid character, but they have one single massive flaw that holds them down. In Mewtwo's case, it's that massive tail hitbox - heck, Mewtwo's low weight wouldn't be as much of an issue if his tail wasn't such a huge target. It's like how Roy's sourspot tipper and Pichu's self-damage completely neuter otherwise strong characters.

I picked up Mewtwo back in high school specifically because he was bottom-tier and a bunch of scrublords were worshipping the tier list without taking skill or matchups into account. Reading smoothbrain charges and smacking them in the face with a fully-charged Shadow Ball (which they somehow forgot I had been charging up at literally *_every opportunity)_* then following up with the classic Downthrow>Shadow Claw one-two combo never got old. A lot of people learned the definition of 'zoning' that year.

In such a speed/movement heavy game as melee, no shot mewtwo was ever a bottom quarter character. I've been a massive mewtwo believer from the first time I saw leffs mewtwo. Such a unique character. Very cool that you like mewtwo as well.

issue was always the weight and awful hurtbox, which he will always have but his offense is 100% too good against spacies to be bottom 7

The funny thing is that Mewtwo has qualities other top tier characters enjoy. Excellent recovery, good range, good wavedash options, tons of fakeouts, combo setups, and yet bottom tier? If people can change their perception of Yoshi, who has a lot of similarities and gimmicks, then maybe people can do the same for Mewtwo.

The main reasons M2 is bottom tier are the ridiculous size of his hurtbox, the fact that his tail attacks aren't disjointed (meaning he can't trade hits well even with proper spacing) and floaties don't care about his combo game. If his tail attacks were disjointed, M2 would absolutely be a mid-tier menace.

The main reason m2 sucks is because his dash dance is worse than just standing, and dash back is just not a usable option due to his tail. Add on to that a lack of early kill potential and not having an amazing punish game, and you get a low tier

i dont think mewtwo is that bad as it ranked now, remember yoshi was so low in tierlist and now that AMSA wins tournaments people realized is a good character, i have the same feeling for mewtwo, if there some good player in it showing its true potential it would be way higher in the tierlist

Yoshi's bad ranking was mostly before anyone knew about parrying. Mewtwo doesn't have any mechanics that haven't been discovered yet. Or at least it's very very unlikely that he does.

@snex000 I doubt that. Mewtwo is one of the most complex and unorthodox characters in the game similar to Yoshi. Someone will find something game changing one day, I don't think it's that unlikely. Plus, we don't have a true spirit Mewtwo main yet who pushes the hell out of their character to the very end from sheer love and commitment, like Yoshi with aMSa, Pikachu with Axe, Puff with Hbox (Etc.) Nobody has actually properly developed Mewtwo yet or solo mained him for a long time and it's exciting tbh

Great video, thanks! Controversial opinion is mewtwo is actually hidden viable the same way DK always was - he's just extremely technical. His combo game is good, he has extensive kill confirms, and he has untapped and some of the best movement. Additionally, he has the best air dodge in the game. I'm here for the mewtwo renaissance once the DK renaissance finally dies down

Still feels baffling to me that smash is that one game where ppl find shame in losing to a low tier secondary when the player they lose to have tons of more productive hours than you, and you probably don't know what to do in the MU either but they do. Like there is no shame in losing a MU you haven't played in your life, just cuz it's decided that the character is unviable to win a major. It doesn't mean that it's impossible to win with said character, but still it's the only community where I have seen people get made fun of for losing to a worse character. Just play the game, it'a not a big deal

If Leffen really wanted to have competition he shouldve moved to the us a long time ago and everyone knows. Ofc its not the personal best option of him but what can you do. Its like raging that Starcraft 1 has no tournaments anymore or sth. Love how you showed a 16 hour drive as being a long one from country to country, but in the US, if you drive from San Diego, California to New York (city), New York, it'll take you about 40 hours if you don't stop. Never even leave the country :P Granted, you'll probably find some good smashers in either city without having to drive across the country.

it's amazing how melee is such a skill based game that it doesn't have a few characters who are competitively good with the rest being not as good , it's just the rest were more complicated to figure out how they were good and now that over time the work has been put into the game it's got a better meta game than it's ever had

Now, i actually watched the game to find where "he said earlier", and I believe he references the following (between the many "Ohlalalalas" which are actually quite common in french). During the first game of this encounter, the french commentator stated that mewtwo eating fox was because mewtwo is above in the food chain, that pokemons in general are above regular animals in the food chain. So when Leffen does these strong combos during game 4 against the Pr. Pro fox, it's like Mewtwo happily eating his lunch break at recess.

@@inheritedwheel2900 I totally get it, and it's definitely a valid hypothesis, but i just don't feel like this is the case here. First, it doesn't seem like it's a footsies moment when he says that, and there's the "as I said earlier" for which I didn't find other footsies reference in the full game. I think he wants to emphasize on the "the game is over, leffen is just eating him alive at this point", which is the point of his "food chain" reference. About the "it's recess", I think saying "it's reset" instead of "recess" is a common mistake from french to english, and in the full game the other commentators also seem to not have fully understand what he meant by "reset".
