When you were talking about smiles and service dogs, I thought about how potent a simple smile is. Recently I went out to a strange place wearing a flower crown. Normally I wouldn't do something like that but I just wanted to cheer myself up. While walking around I noticed that every single person that saw me would smile. It amazed me that just by putting flowers on my head I was able to make the world a brighter place. That's so amazing that you have that opportunity with Ollie, despite the hardships. Keep fighting sister! God bless

Hi Mary and Peter... have not felt much like writing but today you hit on something that has happened to me twice in the last couple of weeks. I also (if you remember) have a service dog -- Molly... she is only one year old and is still in the training period. I have PTSD severe anxiety and depression.... one of her jobs is to alert me when I start showing signs of a panic attack which sometimes I don't realize its happening as well as several other jobs that I did not know she was doing. I realize she is still a puppy and she is still learning everyday (it was recommended that I get her at 8 weeks so that she could bond with me and be aware of my needs which she is doing a great job), although we both have a trainer that helps us once or twice a week most of the training is being done by me. Anyway... A couple of weeks ago a 3/4 year old ran up to Molly and wanted to put her.. I was in line at a store and automatically pulled her to the side of me. I looked at the parent and asked her nicely to please keep her child away from the dog since she was working at this time. WRONG thing to say... that mother got very upset and said... "she only wanted to pet your dog". I didn't really want to get into a confrontation since that is the last thing I need so I just ignored it. Then not more than a few days later I was sitting outside a department store at the mall waiting for my husband to finish paying when this Man approaches us (molly and I) and wanted to pet Molly. I explained to him that she was a service dog and could not be petted and that her vest said that for a reason. (very nicely) i must add, but he blow up at me and started yelling some very inappropriate words to me. By this time my husband showed up and things got heated. My husband is a very calm man and tried to explained to this Man that my service dogs was working and petting him without permission would distract him from his job but this MAN would not have it. Needless to say Security got involved he was escorted out of the mall and I ended up having a major panic attack and had to leave the mall. It would be nice if we all could help educate people (when ever possible), on how important it is not to distract or pet a service dog. Anyway sorry to ramble on. patty

+Pattu Nieto You know what's funny/sad is that people tend to ask if they can pet a normal family dog more then they do a working service dog because they know that a service dog won't bite them so there's no fear there.
@PattyNieto
@PattyNieto 8 жыл бұрын
You are so right. I bet you if my service dog was a Rottweiler no one would want to pet her. ;)
@christinethompson6924
@christinethompson6924 8 жыл бұрын
+Pattu Nieto This is what I think. It's like this guy is happy seeing your dog. He didn't know anything about what a service dog is. He was being nice and it might be hard for him to be nice except that with a dog it's easier for him. And when he was told no, he was embarrassed and his feeling were hurt so he got mad. Then it escalated. I think it's best that people don't pet the service dogs but if they do, you can just smile and say thank you or whatever you feel is right to say, and go on, rather than correcting them. I mean it's just life. People do things they are not supposed to do all the time. When you counter them, it's embarrassing to them, so their reaction is anger. Know what I mean? It can't be perfect but if you see someone that you think will want to pet your dog, just without them noticing, change direction and go another route. :)

Hello. I'm trying to get my dog to be a service dog. I just have a question for you. How do you find a trainer for a service dog? I found this one guy here that says he will train her but it's going to cost $2800. I am new to the world of service dogs so I don't know what to expect ect. I have a lot of problems medically and would benefit from having a service dog. Thanks in advance.
@PattyNieto
@PattyNieto 8 жыл бұрын
+princessaz79 ...Trainers for service dogs are very expensive, but it also depends on what your service dog needs to help you with. I have been blessed in finding people to help just by talking to different people in my area that have service dogs and getting their trainer info. Also..there are things that I need my service dog to help me with that I have been training her myself to do. It takes a lot of love and patients...Molly and I work hard everyday as a team to make this happen. I hope this helps...

Hey "The Frey Life." I am so glad I watched this video today! I have been babysitting this summer while I have had my summer off from teaching. I had an awesome teaching moment with one of the kids today. We saw a service dog at the store and he wanted to pet it. So I explained that the dog was busy working. However, the handler overheard our conversation and let him pet her dog. A rare opportunity but so sweet and he got to learn about service dogs.

I hate it when people go up to dogs that they don't even know without asking the owner and pet them, especially service dogs. For one thing you don't know how they will react (think of it like going up to a stranger and hugging them.) And if it's a service animal they have a job to do, let them work. People can be so frustrating sometimes.

Are there vests for the dogs that say do not touch me or pet me? I think most people in general just don't know. I am thankful to the woman who sweetly told me the "rules" and I was probably the 100th person she educated that day.

I have had my service dog for almost two months and she is a Great Pyrenees puppy that is 14 weeks old. I so totally understand everything you have said. My dog loves people and I let people pet her after they ask. Only once has someone came up to her and did not ask. I have noticed she notices other people who are stressing out in the store and she will very sweetly and gently go up to them and lean her face on their leg. Instantly they relax and pet her and smile. I love seeing her make other people smile and feel better too. My dog is for PTSD. God Bless you both and that precious Oliver.

Hello, I just found your vlogs and subscribed! I wanted to say Thank You for sharing about Ollie and life with a service dog. I have a seven year old who absolutely loves dogs just as my husband and I do and she recently inquired about service dogs and what they are for. We explained to her they are used for different reasons and to never touch or ask to touch a dog in service because of it being a distraction. She was thrilled to learn what they do and why it's so important to never let them. Ollie is a beautiful dog and I enjoyed you sharing his story!

Saw the cow 11 min. 59 Seconds, on Peter's head. That was a funny one :-). I have to say, I totally feel your frustration and understanding with what it is like taking a Service Dog with you into a store. I have to say, personally, the VAST majority of people have been so KIND and more than amazingly understanding. But there are times ,,,, (like the day I had forgotten to take my dog vest with us, when he out grew his original training vest)... and got asked about it by a fellow customer...Or the other day when a kid was running through right the front doors with baby claws and no mom/dad near by ... lol. It's tough.....at the rare times. Especially would love to be back to where I was , and not needing a helper at all. But he is wonderful, and I wouldn't change him for the world. :-) Give Oliver a hug from my puppy. Enjoy your Christmas Kangaroo!!

Sometimes people act like they've never seen a dog, like it's the most exotic creature, when a dog is inside a mall/store. I was confronted by a security guard the other day - it's a long story, I won't go into detail, but seeing a service dog seems to elicit the worst in people sometimes. This guard said I needed documentation to prove my dog is a service animal and to prove I am disabled. Hahahha! I said, "that's alot of documentation for a five minute movie stop" (I was stopping in the library to borrow a movie). It was absurd. Anyway, the incident concluded with a learning experience with the staff, the offender being relieved of his position (because of his reaction to his boss, not me). Sometimes, I don't have time or don't want to be the learning experience provider, know what I mean? I just want to get a movie. It's just a dog, helping me with things I can't do myself that others take for granted like reaching dropped items, transferring from wheelchair to chair, etc. The very kindest thing you can do when encountering a disabled person with a service dog in public is to PRETEND IT'S NOT THERE. OF COURSE you kissed the kangaroo! You've been waiting so long!

I just found your videos and you two are soooo cute! I was drawn to the title because I have a service dog too. It was hard going from a nurse to needing a service dog. I had Rheumatic Fever as a child which caused scarring on my aortic valve. I was able to function normally until I reached the point of my valve only opening a little under half way and the symptoms really kicked in. His name is Happy and he alerts me to irregular heart beats which in turns keeps me from falling due to the light headedness and dizziness and he was with me for about a year when he started alerting to when my blood sugar was low also. The struggle is real with the general public and I wish more people understood that they need to just pretend that he's not there. He gave me back so much independence but at the same time made some simple things (a trip to WalMart) a pain in the butt. I was always taught not to just walk up to an unfamilar animal so it always surprises me at how many people think he's there for their entertainment. Of coarse there are those at the other end of the spectrum who are actually afraid of him too. Keep up the awesome videos and teaching people about service dogs and CF!

Just precious! Thinking of applying for a service dog for our son aged twelve who has medically unstable type one diabetes. It takes three years from start to finish but having a dog would not only provide him with independence but companionship. We also home school :-) Thanks for reminding me to smile x

Sandra Ann you don’t “apply” for a service dog.

Jenny V They meant applying to an organization that trains the service dog, because there’s a wait list you have to apply onto that wait list

Your videos help me address a lot of my fears with getting a diabetic alert dog (I'm a type one diabetic). I want one as I can't feel low blood sugars until I'm in the 30's and I can't wear a continuous glucose monitor (cgm) because I'm allergic to the adhesive. It will also help with my nighttime anxiety with low blood sugar. I just do not want to be singled out/ having a lot of attention. Thank you for showing the less glamorous sides of having a service dog ❤️

What terrible parenting. My son knows to always ask before touching a dog(he's 2.5) Some dogs don't like kids, and some dogs are aggressive. How would those parents react if there child got bit? (obviously Ollie, isn't like that I'm just saying in general).

+The Frey Life those are the kind of parents who if their child got bit would sue and end up getting the dog killed. i dont know why some people don't parent their kids! i never go near a service OR therapy dog unless thhe dogs owner tells me to. or if the dog just comes up to me and like licks me or something which has happened before lol.

It's all cos Oliver is EXTRA SUPER CUTE! I see service dogs (almost always a Labrador) and I wouldn't have the same reaction than I would if I saw you out with Olly - he would defintel for sure being a smile to my face and - I do know not to run up to him and pat him cos he IS a service dog - but boy it would be hard to resist... he's so cute I want to reach through my computer and give him a big smooch ❤️

I know that this is an older video, but if you haven't already, I think that patches saying "do not pet, working dog" would help because the parents may not have known that the kid couldn't touch Oliver because uneducated people may think that he is just there for mobility and they don't really need to be focused on their handler. Love your videos so much! They're very inspiring and keep up the great work❤️👍

Service dogs are wonderful. Jake (mobility assistance dog) is always looking out for me. I had outpatient surgery today and Jake had to wait in the waiting room w/ a friend of mine while I was in the OR. When I got out of recovery (had dystonia issues waking up from surgery) the nurses went to the waiting to get my friend and Jake. They said he popped up the miute they said my name and came trotting back looking for me behind all the curtains until he found me.
