Thank you for the content, however I am graduating with my MSW on May 25, 2021. I am starting to feel discouraged about pursuing this degree. I find it difficult to find employment and if you are not bilingual you are limited. I have numerous years of experience in Juvenile Justice and Homeless Services but this means nothing unless you pass your license. I am taking my license in July 2021, I love the field of social work but I find that trying to just get into the entry level of SW has been difficult.

I graduated with my MSW in 2019. And it’s been a struggle as a black social worker to be hired in a MSW role . All of the MSW roles that I’ve applied for either don’t call or when I do get an interview , “ claim I don’t have enough experience.” Which Im starting to feel like is coded language because you saw my resume/cover letter before you called . ..but then when I apply for roles that I’m over qualified for aka BSW role ...I often get call backs and am given the job . This has been my experience so far . Hoping that when I get licensed some of this will change but i don’t know sometimes it just seems like they don’t want black ppl in a leadership position or a position that pays more than a entry level SW position.

Im not a social worker yet. I have worked within healthcare for over a decade. The best healthcare professionals I have worked with are women from African countries or Asian countries. Unfortunately the town I live it is not culturally diverse and covertly racist. I work in a private hospital almost all of the patients are aged caucasian who have private health insurance so they come from a very privileged background and the mentality of ignorance and racial discrimination so occasionally I have received racial discrimination towards my colleagues. I have always been assertive about this type of behaviour and then they apologise or go quiet. I am Caucasian and they think that they can talk to me thinking I would accept it and I always call it out. I make it clear what my view is and that is a boundary that won't be crossed.
