Hi guys! Welcome back to my channel. In today's video I discuss the term 'Dangerous' airports. What makes an airport dangerous? Think for example about Airplane Performance, Terrain, Weather conditions and Air traffic control. Some runways are short due to surrounding terrain, they just can’t be any longer. Climb gradients can be high due to surrounding terrain as well, there could be a mountain on the extended centerline.
Thank you so much for watching this video! If you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to comment below and maybe I will be answering your question in the next video. If you liked my video do not forget to SUBSCRIBE and THUMBS UP!

In 1997, I was late for a flight at London City to Rotterdam by VLM. I had to dash across the tarmac and board. I needed to get to the office in Rotterdam by 10am. The plane took off and flew slowly over central London turning at Buckingham Palace. I looked at the passages and noticed they were mostly school children. I thought the worst that I have accidently got on the wrong flight which is a sightseeing trip. The captain started taking about the sights you could see from the aircraft. After five minutes, the captain announced, today we have schoolchildren aboard, and therefore I wanted to show London to them, we are now off to Rotterdam and I will make up the time. And he did, we arrived a few minutes early.

Pre 9/11 flying was something else! I understand this is in the UK, but I imagine protocols have changed since 1997 as well. It was always a treat to have an aviation enthusiast in the cockpit during cruise back in the day :)

She is brilliant. Not because she has so much knowledge but because she is able to share it with the average lay person so that it makes sense. The brilliance is in her teaching ability. Her brain is always three steps ahead like a chess player.

@francinevanzanten8368 5 жыл бұрын
No, approaching LCY is normally not stressful but you need to be qualified and that takes quite some training! You are not always flying in perfect weather conditions. It is not only challenging due to the steeper 5.5 degrees approach (until approx. 60 feet above the runway) but flying on runway 09 also requires a typical approach with some nice turns over the city (but that's up to the autopilot) and if you must avoid inbound traffic to Heathrow you fly low at 2000 ft. You take manual control at 1000 ft (autopilot cannot handle it) and from there it is straight forward. Glideslope interception is just before Canary Wharf. If you are not used to a steep approach, by default it is rather difficult to orientate, because you are used to a 3 degree slope. It just doesn't comply with what you are used to. I've only flown it in the simulator (Dash8) but being not used to it, must say it ain't easy.
@michaelksiezopolski
@michaelksiezopolski 5 жыл бұрын
@@francinevanzanten8368 Trust me, there is a stress involved in such steep approach in this size of the airplane. In Dash-8 it is going so fast, London City has pretty short Rwy and it is not really wide either, when you are approaching from Canary Warf side and you need a steeply go down you have power on idle, full flaps, gear down and it still feels like you are accelerating during approach having papi lights on correct glide. I've done it few times and it is always challenging and a bit scary no matter how experienced you are. If you are not used to something it is automatically making you feel nervous, the lack of possible adjustments to pitch makes you even more nervous. It IS in fact difficult approach!

Michael Ksiezopolski as someone who works in aviation, I really wanted to see the approach to LCY, and I did, in a bad weather. It can be and it was a terrifying experience. I have flown on a Q400, and as a former system engineer, I knew all the problems of that aircraft(flap power fault, hydraulic leaks in the nacelle, lock link issue on NLG, spoiler actuator AD,proximity sensor issues which got worse after introduction of new PSEU).When you have such a steep approach(it is really visible in Q400, it seems like it is falling from the sky), strange flare, and short runway surrounded by water in a bad weather, I believe it is really challenging for a pilot to land there.

You’re doing a fantastic job with your flying videos. Keep them coming.

I only just found this video, Thank you for changing dangerous airports to challenging. Much better. London City Airport, I used to deliver and collect new cars from there when it was the Royal Docks. That very place where the airport is, was where cars from America came, they were the American Embassey staff cars. I would collect them from that dock and take them to the embassey in London.

The old Madeira airport was even trickier. On one end the runway ended at a cliff, the other end pointed into a mountain valley. In 1974 I was there 2 times as flight attendant on a Condor 727. Coming in through the winding valley was spectacular, because there was a road on the left side and at times you would fly with the 727 alongside the cars on the road maybe 100 m away. Taking off towards the see was like a carrier takeoff. Short runway that the pilots would taxy to the very beginning, set parking brake, both step on the brake, set TO-power and release the brakes when the aircraft shuddered to break loose. Going over the cliff was phantastic. The other direction was also special. They would taxy right up to the cliff and sitting in the jump-seat I could actually look down (because the front wheel is further back). Then the same brake-TO-power procedure and into the valley.
