This macro photography session at the local nature reserve was all about pushing myself for hours to get a series of close-up images of Honeybrown beetles (Ecnolagria grandis) just at the right moment with their wings extended before taking flight.
It took me several hours and many failed attempts to capture frames at this magnification ratio that I was satisfied with. The timing was crucial as I had to anticipate when the beetle was going to take off and press the shutter milliseconds in advance.

Once again Peter you have outdone yourself. You have by far the best Macro videos on KZfaq. You should have far more subscribers than you have. KZfaq needs to look at their bloody algorithm for sure.

Wow. Persistence really does pay off. I don't think people realise just how many missed macro shots it takes for every good one, especially with a subject like that. But it was well worth it in the end. Well done mate.

Another hugely impressive video, perhaps more so as we can now understand how much effort it takes for you to bring us these amazing videos each week. We teach our college students that failure is just part of the learning process and having the resilience to keep going until you succeed is a vital part of being achievement. Great video once again.

Thank you so much Andrew, you’re too kind! Yes, failure is more important in a way than succeeding. It definitely helps build resilience and makes the whole experience more special when one reaches his/her goal. What do you teach at college if I may ask? Have a good one! Cheers

This was so much fun that I watched it twice! In your second to last shot, at 6:21, was 1/2000 still too slow? This shot was so close to perfection but would another 500th made a difference? I've spent many hours like you did, trying to get butterflies and dragonflies as they're taking off so I get the work that you put into this, Peter!
@peterviragphoto
@peterviragphoto 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, thanks a lot much appreciated. Yes, a few 100th of a second can make a difference for sure. The most difficult part was about nailing the focus due to the proximity of the subject /magnification ratio but was certainly a lot of fun. Cheers

I use the Canon EX RT II but it’s overpriced in my opinion so I’d go for example a Godox speedlite with re-chargable lithium ion battery for faster recycle times which comes handy for hand-held stacks too. www.digidirect.com.au/godox-v1-ttl-li-ion-round-head-camera-flash-for-canon?gclid=CjwKCAjw9e6SBhB2EiwA5myr9lwKfSz8gpROq05Y1MO4wSGf8VeCanysY27eIBW6hDuB_XCx4LdLthoC3w4QAvD_BwE Cheers
