Not only was Takemiya in his peak form in 1988, but that same year he won the first international tournament ever played, the Fujitsu Cup. Very impressive win against a world champion.

You're such a gift to the West, Michael. I wouldn't be as far into Go as I am if it weren't for your ambassadorship of the game. So exciting to see your own game vs Takemiya (!) ...which you even WON! Awesome! What a legacy you have.

I noticed with some of Takemiyas games, if his opponent would challenge his "cosmic structure" too severely, he would seem to suddenly begin to reverse everything, and take all the territory and just outscore his opponents. You would think it was Cho Chikun you were watching.

During watching this game I had a feeling that Takemiya had a lot more in mind than happened on the board, I mean white's territory was clearly sen on every stage while black's only was vaguely drafted so what a great skill one needs to have to turn that big territory draft into the certain amount of points. The scale of Takemiya's thought is so impressive and Michael's technical skills are fantastic. Masterpiece game, thank you so much for sharing!

Wonderful game. It’s amazing how the double-ponnuki ends up becoming a weak group! Although actually I guess that kind of thing happens fairly often: a position is so strong that it’s natural to keep ignoring moves towards it and let it take care of itself, so to speak.

a Go move is like the answer to a mathematical problem. when the answer (move) is found by another person, or a machine, working back from the answer is all you can do. But when it's your own move, you have a unique opportunity to lead us along your own path of working forwards, towards it, which would be so much more instructive. for example, you could have taken us with you for a ride along your train of thought that led you to white J8, instead of just saying "and then i played here" and mentioning one reason why afterwards. but that wasn't the only reason for J8, was it? It's the whys that count!

When did it become common to 3-3 the double wing? I wasn’t playing in the 80s but by the time I was watching YT go vids it was well before AI and the jump into the 3-3 vs the double wing was almost an auto-play no think just invade kind of move.

Mr. Redmond. I have a question regarding the sequence at minute 18. Why could Black not avoid a ko with move 8 at T13? Am I wrong ofr doesnt this move avoid ko and leaves White with just 1 eye?
@MichaelRedmondsGoTV
@MichaelRedmondsGoTV 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but since that move was bad anyway I left it out of the commentary. Congrats on seeing that move which would work in a tsumego-like situation. Taking White's eye with that move will take away all of Black's liberties and makes the weak point in the corner P16 relatively easy for White to make use of.
