Mainstream media coverage of the war in Ukraine has sought to erase the U.S. and NATO role in setting the stage for the conflict, the Western history of attacking Russia, and Europe’s violent and racist past and present.
Joseph Massad, Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia University, joins Dispatches with Rania Khalek to remind us of the hypocrisy and history the West has attempted to erase as it escalates the war against Russia in Ukraine.

Thank you for this excellent and enlightening presentation. I am a 71-year- old American who was raised in the American Midwest, and was educated in public schools. Allow me to list several items which I was taught growing up, and which I believe are pertinent to what was presented here by Rania and Mr. Massad: The USA is the greatest country in the world. The USA is the greatest country that has ever existed on Earth. The USA is a democracy and has the best form of government in the world. The USA is the pinnacle of civilization. Americans are the most superior people in the world. People in other countries should try to be more like Americans. The USA is the safest country in the world. The world outside of the USA is a little bit dangerous. Russia is a very evil country. Russia is the greatest threat to world peace. Looking back, I think I was just a little brainwashed.

Dude brainwashing starts when we were in school, especially history classes who are whitewashed to put white Americans on pedestal while other countries are always evil and backward and deserves to be bombed. We got brainwashed big time and of course daily mainstream media just consistently reinforces such disinformation and brainwashing.

But US managed to convince the world of the same narrative. It is only lately that many ppl around the world hv woken up to its nefarious designs. The Americans by & large r well meaning but they hv brought into this narrative & never question their Govt when it invades any country. Americans feel that any America invasion will leave the country better that before. The Russians & Chinese on the other don't trust any narrative being dished out by their govts and hv better & open view of international affairs. The Western media as well as Citizenry is coming out to be extremely biased and closed minded almost childlike during this current European crisis

Well said Thomas. When you're a child you believe and accept anything that you learnt at school. But here is the point, why don't ask yourself and others when you grown up. Why,how, is always America right. In American history only the first 16 years of its so called democratic creation lived peaceful. After that regime and destruction other countries is their main priority.

When I was 6 years old my grandpa told me to never believe anything i see or hear coming from that picture box. He was referring to a television. How he knew that is beyond me, cause we didn't have electricity, let alone a television. I've always remembered that and learned to do research on whatever it may be. I'm 68 now and have friends in Russia, so thanks to my Russian friends I've been educated somewhat on what Russia is really like, rather than what our main stream media tells the public. It's discouraging trying to explain to ppl what's really going on in Ukraine. I've pretty much have given up. People believe what they chose to believe, especially when they have been brainwashed by the lying media their whole lives. I'm praying for the end of this war. Too many lives have been lost unnecessarily.

My grandpa was a drunk, but he was also very smart and told me about how the gov. spreads mindvirus (ideologies) through paper and picture. I never believed nor disbelieved him but with time I saw what he saw. But how someone who was an alcoholic for over 40 years and was an active architect (who build the exile house for the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala) could still think straight is still beyond me. I wonder how he would have been without the alcohol. This guy easyly drank 2 vodka bottles in under 2 hours and you wouldnt see that hes drunk

History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes. Thank you Rania for a more rational approach to Putin's military action. I hope you've learned that you can despise war, as I do, while realizing that the alternative to war could be even worse for far more people. Putin's actions have caused far less death than what the Ukrainians had caused in the seven years since 2014 (14,000 deaths and many more injured and maimed), and they had planned to take increased action in the Donbas region which could have resulted in the deaths of as many as 60,000 innocent people, and Zelensky was asking for nuclear weapons to be deployed in Ukraine. I am 68-years-old and there have been no military action that can remember which has been taken in a more humane way than what Putin is doing, so to call him an irrational actor is ludicrous. Your willingness to reevaluate your previous stance makes me love you even more. Cheers.

The ratio of hospitals shelled and bombed in Ukraine versus hospitals bombed by the US in Iraq is so far about 39:1. And rather than acknowledge the truth which the captured Russian soldiers have verified that they did in fact target civilian hospitals, the Russian side of course said that it was because soldiers were in those hospitals. Very typical response. Also, is it visible to you that every single apartment building has been destroyed in Kharkiv and Cherniyiv? You really want to only see what you want to see.

Cruise missiles were also launched into Iraq and Libya too, I am sure if you asked the senior military leadership of the Pentagon or NATO they would tell you that the missiles were intended for military targets not civilian ones although civilians can still get hit. The norm is to logically target military assets first and there are still plenty of those to hit with missiles if they found them in places like Iraq & Syria & Libya they can find those in Ukraine.

I agree ! The consent factors involved here resemble how Americans view their sports teams like the NFL or MLB. It’s a tribalism behavior that’s reflected in the truth Americans don’t care if their teams cheat or bully their way into a win just as long as THEY WIN AT ALL COSTS! Forget their integrity comments or words about fair play! That’s all BS. Americans just expect to win and don’t care who’s starving or living in ghettos overseas. In fact they blame those people n their governments for being stupid and corrupt. They ignore the truths about imperialism, economic sanctions and American corporations stealing natural resources of those countries or controlling their markets.

I think some learn from history and copy the evil side of it even as it was done to them they do it others that never did it to them as in US was colonised it went on to colonies and enslaved people from lands that were not Britain Hitler did evil to the Jews yet the Jewish people Zionist does the same to Palestinians Syrians they copy the evil people from history and make allies of those who were evil towards them, same as USAll EX colonialists are still doing it to African Nations. WWI and Two were Europeans fighting for control of Africa they wanted as all Empires fall so will this one if they want what another country has just buy if for goodness sakes, to control the nations not aligning with them is what US andNATO are doing nothing but evil to the world they never talk world peace but lie about nations like saying derogatory things and the Media are complicit. The Israelis are becoming the second mos evil county in the world today. The British still doing evil lying about history and the present to get their people to do their bidding. They are the barbarians yet blame China Russia African continent Palestine Muslims are the big target now Africa is involved in getting he ex colonisers out of their lives but US and NATO does the wrong killing their leaders saying they are the evil. They will destroy theirselves with their greed and hate. 🌍❤️🌏🌎🌏

Prior to Feb 22 Nazism was a real issue in Ukraine as reported in the Media all the time. Integrating Nazi Battalions into the Ukrainian Military is not “ overplaying “ the Fascist card. What if USA accommodated the Ku Klux Klan openly into the USAF? Russians have been persecuted in Ukraine for years and Nazis played a major role in the coup in 2014. Ukraine is not the sort of “ Democracy” we should be flooding with weapons or elevating to a gold standard of morality worth other misinformed people dying or killing for. A pleasure to listen to your very knowledgeable guest. Very thoughtful view point.

This doesn't mean we have to be brothers but we can still cooperate for the good of all. It's not a zero sum game. We can all win. Excellent presentation. I have studied both history and political science, particularly international relations, and can confirm that Massad's analysis of both the war in Ukraine, and more importantly, the analysis of the West's superiority complex, is bang on. As a white Canadian, I am embarrassed to be a part of the phenomenon Massad describes, including Canada's participation in the unjust war in Afghanistan, which most Canadians passively accepted-and many cheered. Equally embarrassing is Canada advertizing for highly skilled immigrants only to not recognize their credentials and see them relegated to labour positions. "Othering" is a primordian human narrative associated with our being trapped in duality and its consequent polarities. I dream of the day humanity can reflect on itself as global citizens first, and regional citizens second. But, first, we need to see some form of disintegration of the nation-state and its concomitant nationalist and often hate-filled ideologies. And likely before this can happen, humanity will first have to turn inward and address individual self-hatred to find the love within each one of ourselves that can be shared with all others.

"Fascism was a violent form of capitalism". What does that even mean ? The fascists spoke of the arostocracy in the trenches, so the rich were probably their favourite for the new power institution. The misunderstanding comes from fascism was suppose to organize the country in corporations. How many corporations do you think existed during the great war ? The answer is for this clueless narrator to find out what the corporations in Italy was suppose to be and no. It was not Black rock etc. It was the important elements of society cooperating in various regions of the country. In corporation there was a representative of the church, unions, businesses and other important parts of society. These corporations would of course answer to the doctator. When they have understood that little I can´t trust that they made their homework on the other issues.
