It's safe because there is no down force applied by the motor. It's only removing spring pressure so door is only going down by gravity.

I have an extremely tight area for an opener. 10’ wide x 9’ high door.

The main benefit I see for this open sprocket type chain drive is that it allows for mounting the opener where I have room, as the direct drive jackshaft openers will not clear the beams on each side of my jackshaft ends. These type of open sprocket type chain drive openers are common for commercial doors and have been around for a long time. Look it up. The people criticizing this idea are know nothings. No, the commercial models are not cheap, but they are under $1000. They use a hoist style chain to open the door manually. I would like to see this added to this idea/design. The only thing then that might be missing is a deadbolt. Electric deadbolts are available for residential jackshaft openers, but some apparently have reliability problems from plastic (!!!) gears. (Here's a video how to make one from a solenoid that looks pretty awesome: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qJyfacxy3LHJeIU.html.) Or... an old fashioned key lock hand twist latch like the ones we used before garage door openers could still be used as a backup or as the lock. It would require an extra step of exiting and re-entering the car, but that should not be a big problem for a door that is not the main door.

Can this be done to an opener that is currently belt drive? I need to get my opener out of the way do to a vehicle lift install. But the ones that are side mounted factory are REALLY expensive.
