@@xtra-oi9xb Different snakes venom has different effect. I knew right from the word go that cham will not win this battle and felt sorry 4 it but could not do anything since am watching a video. If i was around I could have saved the poor guy from certain agonising death. What about the "chemical" that brings down a full grown man or a male lion being injected 2 a small,creeping creature weighing less than 400grams? It's pure hell man! I dropped some tears seeing cham going thru' this deadly nightmare whose common denominator is death. Sad.

Looks like the snake was turning away so I'm guessing the chameleon lived... I can't tell what kind of snake it was but if the snake was venomous it would have stayed around to eat its meal once it died and likely wouldn't have kept attacking after the first bite or 2 which makes me believe it's not a venomous snake

@@kaiuwu2002 Not a black mamba. The head structure is too short. Mambas have coffin shaped heads that are much longer and less blunted than this snake's. They're also two toned, but solid in color, mostly a dark slate gray, to black with lighter belly scales. The black within the mouth of black mamba, how it truly gets its name is missing here with this snake. Mambas are also front fanged snakes, this snake in the video was obviously rear fanged, because it had to open its mouth wider to actually deliver the bite. All this said, it is a female grey toned Boomslang.

If you look at the video evidence itself, you will see the body structure, head structure, mannerisms for which it bites its prey, and the thumbnail of the video itself, which was a still image taken from the video. You will see that it is indeed NOT a Black Mamba, but a female boomslang. If you won't take my word for it, a simple bit of research will also lead you to the same answer. It simply wasn't correct information given by the people recording the sighting - it happens. Just taking someone's word for anything and assuming what they say is true, doesn't make it true.

Its a maruvian snellysnake. They do that to determine the size of their target. Theyre not poisonous.

But that's not a Black Mamba, Mambas have a distinctly coffin shaped elongated mouth. This was a Boomslang. You can tell because of the minimized pattern on the two-toned body. The non-coffin shaped head is also a give away, like I said. Black Mambas are darker and non-patterned, even in their juvenile/younger forms. A child in the video called it black mamba, but it wasn't.

this is what I was wondering as it could indicate sub saharan...I think it may be a Flapneck Chameleon also sub saharan. I had Veiled and Jackson chameleons...one lays eggs and the other lays sacks they break their way out. Come home one day and had eleven little babies crawling around the cage.

I don't think so. The head seemed to be a different shape, the colouration was a bit off, and black mambas usually bite and release, not bite and struggle.

the shape of the head i thought boomslang but the colouration and seeming lack of venom i'm guessing not a boomslang either. tis a mystery. UPDATE: it actually IS a boomslang according to an expert. venom took a while to impact the chameleon i guess.

@@austinb3560 negative, they change colors for danger, mating, attracting sun in the morning and a few other reasons like sleeping which is the best time to take a pic of their pretty color formation. The way they blend in to the surroundings is by acting like a leaf and swaying. The feet are zygodactylus, if you had one on a pencil it can hold on 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees. If you walked by one it would go 90 or 270 on the branch away from you. Mine was blue and I could not find him back in a green tree and when I did he was right in front of me the whole time. They will also make themselves very thin when they sway. Check out the Panther Chameleon and its subspecies of colorations. I had Veiled and Jackson Chameleons...oddly the Veiled layed eggs in the ground and the Jackson had eggs sacks that would stick to leaves and the neonates break out of. Went to work one day I had five chameleons, came home I had 16 chameleons.

Venom doesn't knock them out rightaway.. and we don't see what happens much afterwards in the vidoe. So the snake could have had a good meal that day.

To me it looks like a Boomslang, which is a rear-fang venomous snake. They regularly hunt chameleons. Rear fanged snakes need to grind their fangs into their prey in order to inject their venom sufficiently. That is why it may have went in and bit twice, just to make sure. Actually makes them more tricky to hold, since they can rotate their jaw, even slightly and catch a finger. Most venom extractors would tell you that they'd rather deal with front fanged snakes. Venom is rather slow acting depending on the toxicity, amount injected, and where on the body (if it hit skin, muscle, or vein). Irregardless, venom doesn't instantly kill anything. I wouldn't know how long Boomslang venom takes to kill a chameleon. Venom does seem to impact mammals faster than fish/reptiles. But it definitely wasn't a Black Mamba, which is what a younger person said in the video.

@@jeremy6017 Thanks. Compared this video with pix of the Boomslang species. Dealt with a small viper when i was a kid at some point back during jurassic era. (40 years ago) Was always fascinated about snakes and reptilians. Couldn't place this one however. Black or Green Mamba we know it is not.

@@bohemianwriter1 Yeah, what makes this one difficult, is the speed at which the snake is peri-scoping and moving. The giveaways to me though, is how the snake bit the chameleon. If you notice, it had to open its mouth at a significantly wider angle than most snakes. Which indicated to me, that it was rear-fanged. It also wasn't a bite and release, the snake held on for a few seconds. Also, with Boomslangs there are variations. They're sexually dimorphic, which means males look different than females. So that makes them more easily overlooked, if they're female. Males are striking, with the green scaled with blue or black spotting throughout. Females are more olive to gray toned, with a brown or grayish more subdued pattern. It also isn't the biggest boomslang I've ever seen either. So this specimen, although I think is reaching sexual maturity, still has some growth and filling out to do in her lifetime. I also learned that they have a hemotoxic sort of venom, which would explain the lack of seeming, injury to the chameleon itself. It would have taken time for the blood to begin to break down and not clot. So it is more slow acting than the Mamba who has a neurotoxic venom and doesn't have the enzyme that would cause necrosis at the point of envenomation. I find that vipers are easier to tell what they are, their facial structure and larger venom glands typically give them away. These slender speedy snakes are difficult.
