Practice this pivot challenge both forward and backward. It is an important skill for gaining speed on a change of foot in a spin, either from forward to backward or vice versa, and also for maintaining the same centre on that change of foot so that both parts of the spin are in the same place. If you can do this pivot in a very low position with the toe pick leg very bent and the gliding leg very straight, then you will be able to stay low on a sit-change-sit. Most skaters rise up on the change of foot. Staying low should not only be reward by judges for grade of execution, but will also allow for the most acceleration of the spin as you change from one foot to the other. This lesson starts with a few bonus exercises not directly related to the pivot, although it should be noted that these pivots show the most skill and style when the toe pick leg hip is turned out and the blade of that toe pick is lined up with the gliding foot.
