I have to say, that one drove me crazy. I could not picture a case in which I am 3d tracking in landscape, and then I dont want to 3dtrack on portrait... so having it orientation specific threw me off the first days with the camera. So now I only have focus point being independent in each mode. but I guess it is up to each shooter.

Anyway to lock the focus point? I back button focus (which I like to call machine focusing - shutter button focus disabled but not really manual since I’m using Afs mode) and the little knob that positions the red box in the display is easy to accidentally hit and then you have to find it over on the edge somewhere and move it back more towards the center where you can then line it up on the subject.

@@bobwoolcock Don't think so. It's not only Nikon that seems to reset the focus point randomly. Try turning off touch.

Awesome! I love the information and the way you presented it! I will definitely be checking out the rest of your videos :) Might you have one that is a comprehensive guide to the ISO settings? After a few weeks with the Z9 I have found the ISO is now all of a sudden a bit finicky. And aperture is now also all over the place as well. I still have a ton of learning to do so these might just be rookie questions :). I will also try and find any link here you might have to send in a donation.

Thanks. Setting exposure is fairly generic across all camera models. I recommend that you use aperture priority with AutoISO - that serves me well.

Yeah, I am one of those people who treats every new camera like its a James Webb Telescope and take 2-3 days to meticulously customize every setting before trying to capture anything, so I would get around to those settings but, you're right, that's kind of crazy. Thanks for these tips!

A gentleman I know had a Z9 at the local nature spot last week. I asked him, if there was anything he didn't like. His response was that the camera kept going to sleep after 10 seconds. I pulled up the menu on my Z6 and guided him to turn off the sleep function. After setting it and seeing that it worked he let out a big sigh of relief. I knew his pain, as I remembered struggling to find this when I first got my Z6.

Love your sweet sarcasm! The thing I add to video is Waveform (although in such a small rendition it is nearly useless to properly expose for skintone or greycard... and for run & gun ETTR is easier at-a-glance with a histogram), and digital horizon to the video mode display. I will figure out also a way to quickly switch between video modes, since different situations and objectives may require switching between 10-bit N-Log, 12-bit N-Log N-RAW, 10-bit HLG

Thank you. Great video very helpful. I was photographing catalog shoot with a model in studio and had no problem with my exposure, however when I switched to photograph paintings for another client, I ran into some problems. The viewfinder and LCD screen was dark and wouldn't allow me to see the painting before shooting. What can I do within settings to avoid this issue? If I am not explaining myself enough I can try to rephrase my question.

Did the photos turn out? Sounds like an exposure setting problem. Which exposure mode are you using? AutoISO?

Glad found your video. Got my z9 yesterday. I took a still image but when hit play or preview, I got a black screen, no image. I imported to computer, also shown a black screen instead of the image I shot. Any suggestion?

Assuming you’ve taken the lens cap off, do you see an image in the viewfinder? Are you using P mode? Is AutoISO on (it is by default)?

Question for you - is it possible to set up a fn button to control the AF subject detection options? I haven't been able to figure that one out. The option isn't under the fn setups.

Oh this was great! So many useful things for my new camera haha. One thing you didn’t touch but I’m lost.. How do I make my rear dial zoom in/out when viewing photos after I’ve taken them? Both dials scroll.. that’s a waste. I found the option for zoom in the sub command dial setup.. but it isn’t working it seems?

Not sure what's going wrong in your configuration. I sometimes find it's best to do a reset which somehow restores things I can't figure out.

Thank You Maarten. It sounds me that NIKON default settings are JPG and sRGB. When you turn on the camera there is a encrypted warning that tells you to set up camera control which means the same thing I suppose it should say "warning you have just spent a fotune for a camera but it is set to sRGB JPG." Always nice to know my videos are helpful. It's available as one of the custom options. You can also set it to always display the photo just taken, and over-ride that with a soft press on the shutter.

In review mode, you should be able to examine the details. You can use the playback menu to add more information to the review screens with the playback view options. If you have taken the picture with the RAW option enabled, the Retouch menu's RAW processing option has many ways to manipulate an image, including lightening shadows.

I shoot almost exclusively in AF-C, so I honestly sort of forgot about the AF illuminator. Imagine my surprise when I unboxed my Z9 to take my first -normal jpeg- (whoops!), and the GREEN SPOTLIGHT illuminated my room.

@@MaartenHeilbron I immediately turned it off, but I guess I'm glad I have it. The Z9 is so sure footed with focus, and the starlight mode in extreme situations that I just don't see the use for my usual shoots (mostly people, and environmental shoots). . I'm loving shooting silent with subjects as it tends to make them a little less self conscious, and I think the green light would take away from the newfound comfort for my subjects.

Hello Maarten I have a problem that has been bothering me for ages. how do u change shutter speed on A mode when recording video ? its fixed for 1/50 on my z9 whether i shoot 50p or 100p which really drive me crazy plz help

Here's the thing. When the mode is at A, you are telling the camera it can set the shutter duration. If you want to control the shutter duration, you must use M (or S) modes. BTW - 1/50th seems like the right duration for either 50 or 100 fps. That provides the right amount of motion blur to allow the human eye to perceive the individual frames as smooth motion.

Putting the switch near the shutter button on the vertical grip to the L position also disables the AF-ON button (and possibly the shutter button) on the vertical grip.

Got by chance local store mistakenly calling me . The first time went there asking for taking order they refused. But the next day someone is calling me come take your camera . After two hours calling me back we did mistake. So you have to bring back . So it was so easy turned off my phone for three days . And I'm so so so much happy. Thank you Nikon

@@MaartenHeilbron Oh - there's a setting on the Z7II, I'll need to see if it's in the Z9 menus as well, leave the focus where it is. In other words, the default setting throws the lens in to some middle focus position instead of where you last were. Really frustrating if, for example, your shooting some table top stills, or a video - or anything really and you need to power down the camera to change batteries or memory card - and you have to re-focus the lens - unless you tell it stay at the same focus point before you powered it down.

Changing the drive wheel and relying on the i menu works, however I found that you lose the ability to automatically see the shot you just took without pushing the Play button.

Very helpful! I don't get why manufacturers ship their cameras with only JPEG enabled. I remember when I got my X-H2, the first time I went out to shoot wildlife, I came home with a bunch of JPEGs, super disappointed. I made sure to check for that as soon as I got my Z8. 😅 And kind of funny how you say, that they could remove the collar altogether, because with the Z8, they actually did. 😁

Its such a bizarre choice but we work with rental houses all the time and they of course do factory resets when returned - so first thing we always have to do is set it back to RAW. Never understood that decision as a default.

Very nice unexpected surprise, and very, very nice to not need to take my glasses off when switching between looking through EVF and rear screen (or other camera controls). Nikon really thought this camera through well (and that coming from somebody -- me -- who's been very critical of Nikon the past few years).

Here’s another inexplicable default setting - exposure info on display is absent. Although this amazing piece of tech may change my old school habits, for now I like to start with Aperture Priority then switch to manual to fine tune and add consistency to a series of shots. Hit the play button and all you get is useless info at the bottom. But… if you select Playback menu, Playback display options, Exposure info, when you press the down side of the OK button wheel you can see the exposure for that image.

I already got got, the first 30 photos on my first Z9 job were taken in JPEG and I only realized it when I couldn't figure out why they looked off when I was reviewing them and brought up the file info screen and saw that the file extension was not .NEF. A lot of the settings you talked about are genuinely really puzzling. You spend $6,000 on an ultra-advanced, professional camera body and most of the functions Nikon advertised as benefitting the professional are off by default and buried in the menu system. Perhaps not annoying since it only takes a few seconds to change, but certainly bizarre.

They set it to JPEG normal so you could be wowed by 100 FPS. That's a pretty good foot forward

If that's the rationale - I think they should put their best foot forward and go with the best image quality.

Here’s another one - Playback menu, Rotate tall - turn it OFF. Otherwise when reviewing images, anything you shot vertically (portrait) will only show letterboxed even if you rotate the body. Of course you can still zoom in but better to start full frame.
