For this week's video, I share with you one setting you should change immediately if you are a wildlife photographer. Setting up my Fn Lever correctly really helped me be more efficient. Great info Emilie. One thing I would suggest looking into is to consider using the AEL/AFL Button to change a complete set of shooting settings. For example, on my E-M1X, I have programmed my AEL/AFL Button to toggle Custom Mode 2, On & Off. I have all my BIF setting set up in C2 -- Auto ISO, 9 Target Focus Box, Shutter Priority @ 1/2500th Sec, C-AF with Bird Tracking, Pro Capture, etc.. So if I'm shooting a bird perched on a branch and I'm in Aperture Priority, with ISO 200, Single Focus Point, S-AF, etc., and I want to get some shots of the bird taking off, all I have to do is press the AEL/AFL Button and 'bang' all of my setting instantly change. When I'm done photographing his take off, I can instantly switch back to my static settings with that button.

I use Lever 2 to switch to video mode. I don't shoot video often but it is great to have a very quick button that recalls my default settings when I do.

I love the extra buttons, dials, and switches because it makes it so much easier to get to what you need. I haven't set up the function lever on my E-M1X yet, but I'm sure I'll find a use for it in my own photography at some point

Just got my new OM1 after using the E5 for the past 13 years. The E5 replaced the E3, E1 and the Classic OM4T which replaced the original OM1. Just would like to say a big thank you for raising the easiness of using the different functions.

Goodness, what a pleasure to hear someone speak properly and slowly. Thanks for this. Now I have a use for the Fn Lever. I currently consume three Custom Modes for birds - BIF, BOP and ProCap. Now I can free one one up for something else!

I have set my Fn button to power. Being able to power the camera with one hand is great. Nikon and the Panasonic G9 have the power button at the shutter button. Each have their way of customizing the buttons.

Yes with a heavy lens its awkward having to move the left hand to the power switch, the G9 setup was much better for that.

Yes I use the FN Lever-switch and lately Back Buttton focus, but customised C1 to Bird-tracking, with a rather quick shutterspeed and more focuspoints. C1 is connected to the expo-button +/- . The AEL-button is set to Birdtracking. In normal shooting of birds I'm using 1 or 5-focuspoint controled by FN-lever and always C-AF+M. With Back buttonfocing you can stop focusing by not pressing the AF-On button, but still shoot some images by continue pressing down the shutter (this simulates S-AF) if the focsing isn't not good you can manual focus, say a sitting bird in a tree.

Initially I did have mine set up in the same way. But then as I started using custom modes for birds standing still and birds in flight, I found that the switch got confusing and unnecessary. So I changed it to the mode where it switches the dials from shutter and aperture to exposure compensation and ISO I think, depending on what mode you’re in. I thought about using it as the power switch as well because I hate having to let go of a heavy lens to switch the power on with my left hand. But I haven’t got around to trying that yet.

That’s interesting. I’ve currently got my lever set to switch the shutter button to video. I shall try this out, thank you. I use The AEL button for back button focusing. I use one of the custom buttons on the front of the camera to switch subject detection - it’s brilliant because if you keep it pressed and move the dial, you can toggle through them all or turn it off. The other front button I have set to C1, which is set for birds in flight.

I setup the C1 mode for BIF, and then assigned the shoulder "ISO" button to it. No time to muss around when a eagle on the wing suddenly appears etc. I leave the regular mode as SAF with small focus area, so can toggle betwen with button. I did map the detect mode to a front button, and the magnify to the 2nd front button. I haven't messed with the lever yet, so it sort of give you two sets of setting to flip between by default.

Hi Emilie, my lever settings are the same as yours. My AEL button is still doing Auto Exposure Lock as I do like to be able to quickly lock exposure in certain situations. I use the AF-ON button to toggle subject detect on/off (or hold it and use the dial to change the detection type). I have tried several times to get in the habit of back button focus and can't seem to convert to that way of working so the button is available for this other use. I love being able to customize so many buttons on the and the lever on the OM-1 but I have a hard time remembering what each one does, especially the ones I don't use as often. I rely more on custom modes, the super menu, and My Menu except for a few things I really want to be able to change very fast.

Hi Emilie. Like others I use ael to select exposure lock and the lever to switch on video, but I must say that I don't use either of these functions often so may rethink and try yours. On my old e-m1 mark ii the lever was my on/off but it is too small on the OM-1. I use the af-on for subject detection. This is combined with face detect on the top front button. Pressing af-on automatically switches subject detection off and face detection on. This does not work the other way around as the front button only controls face detection. Lastly, I have set the left D button to 4 af areas... All, custom rectangle, single and small (you can't delete the small). I can quickly change to a single area but would stay in caf unlike your lever function. I also reduced the size of the af area movements to the smallest setting (don't ask me how I did that but I saw it in another video). Cheers Bob.

I enjoy your useful videos thank you. I am about to assign the Function Lever now, and try it out. It sounds great. However, I like to use the AEL button to lock exposure in a part of the frame that suits my subject., then use the AF button as BBF. That way I can leave my metre on ESP and I don’t have to trust that I have accurately placed Spot Metre when a bird or animal is bright against a dark background or dark against a bright BG. It is a habit from my earliest days with my first digital camera in 2008. Actually I used to do it with film cameras back when we could only metre with a simple lightmetre handheld ! For Subject detection, so far I am using the Record Button to toggle Bird on and off because I never video. I have not had much opportunity to do much photography with my OM-1 because it did crazy things from the beginning, and finally went away for detailed testing. It has just come back and as I had guessed, they had to replace the motherboard which was faulty. All the best. Cheryl in tropical far North Queensland in Australia. 😊

Perched birds will be either Shutter or Aperture priority, depending upon the type of bird - some sit still while others flit about very quickly and randomly, but for BIF, I have that on C1 which is accessed by pressing middle finger, top button, right hand (your hand normally sits right on this button) ........ I haven't used depth of field preview button since the film days, so I just program that button for mode change ...... auto focus areas are set on the mode I am using ........ small for statics and cross or medium for Bird in Flight which includes ProCap, so that works instantly for departures or arrival upon a known or anticipated perch ........... BTW I know English isn't your first language, but FYI "clog" = wooden dutch shoe, and "cog" = Gear , which is the icon in the menu between the playback symbol and the wrench symbol ....

I'm also mostly photographing wildlife. On the EM1-ii I was using the Fn lever to switch the function of the rear dial to exposure compensation, but OM Systems helpfully provided a button for that on the OM-1, so I'm not sure yet what I most want to toggle. From the EM-1-ii I learned to use custom modes to switch between my most frequently-used settings (C1 single AF with a small focus point; C2 C-AF with a grid for birds in flight; C3 C-AF with ProCap) and it seemed natural to build on this and add bird-AF to C2, and use C4 for animal AF. It's faster than working through the menus, but I have to dial through several options, sometimes as the bird disappears. Your solution linking alternative setting to the Fn lever would be faster, but I think the lever is very small. Particularly with gloves on. Have you tried working the OM-1 Fn lever in an icy New Hampshire winter, wearing gloves?

I didn’t understand how to program the lever for particular AF settings. The video did a great job on explaining why it was good to have the feature, but I only understood how to set the lever to switch between focus modes and not how to program which modes.

Go to M. Then have the lever on position one. Pick the setting you want by clicking on ok(this will send you to the menu to change the focus settings etc…Theb change the lever to 2 and click again on OK and change for different settings (like I did in the video). Now every time you switch the lever you will get the setting you programmed for each lever. As you are aware M mode you can also save this as C1 etc…

I just came back from shooting landscapes in Kyoto and will be going to Canada in a month for snowy owls. I was wondering what the point of that switch and AEL was about, how I might customize it, etc. So this was perfect timing! And I've got that sweatshirt in burnt orange and have asked Santa for the other design in black. Question: I've already set up C1 for bird photography... so should I be in C1 when I make these adjustments to the 1/2 levers and AEL button?

Hi Ken. Sounds like you have some exciting photo opportunities ahead. Love snowy owls. They are such beautiful birds. To answer your question: Go to M mode, redo all your C1 settings and apply the lever setting there and then resave to your costume setting C1.

Great video. Very helpful. I am expecting a new OM-1 in a few days. I currently use a lumix G9 and have no experience with Olympus. Can that lever be programmed for different function in the different custom settings? Say different focus points in C1, and then something different for C-2?

I use the lever for switching to video and the AEL button to select or deselect bird eye focus. I received my OM-5 today and was wondering if you will suggest settings for it. I will use it as a backup to my OM-1 on wildlife photo trips.

Emilie enjoyed your keynote presentation in St. Augustine. After talking with your colleagues and folks at Hunt's and OM System went with the OM 5 as my travel camera. Would these settings apply to the OM 5 know the menus are different?

When you use the fn lever in for birds in flight are you in single shot mode mode or burst? I use a custom setting for birds in flight but it’s always set to 10 or 25fps. I use a different custom setting for perched birds and don’t use a burst mode. I can see that using the fn lever button is quicker than changing custom modes, so I might give that a go. I’d like to see more videos on how you programme your OM1 now that you have been using it for quite a long time.

Hi Emilie Please can I ask a question regarding exposure compensation - On my previos cameras there was a dedicated wheel for ex comp. On the OM5 it is a button. do you have to press and hold this button whilst turning whatever wheel is allocated for it - OR - is it a press and release then turn the wheel and press again to come out of ex comp? I am in the exploration stage so have not hand hands on with this camera yet.

Hi Tim. Happy to help on this. In mode M, exposure compensation is available when AUTO is selected for ISO. You need to press the ex comp button and turn the rear wheel while still holding the ex comp button. Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to send more questions.

@@EmilieT Thanks thats a great help - just one further request , some reviewers complain about the size of the EVF - have you found a problems with viewing images on it. Its important to me to know as I wear glasses so therefore my eye does not go into the eyecup - once again thanks for your help.

I use C1 for bird ai and C2 for animal ai. Can i use together with fn lever for faster change to motion bird or still setting?

Yes it will save the lever settings if you save it in C1 or C2 etc...

Whatever button you pick for animal detection, keep it pressed and then turn the front dial and you will be able to move from bird to dog to plane. Super useful.

Yes, the lever settings would work the same on the Em1 III, but no subject detection for the AEL button.

I set up one of my button for animal detect and if you press on it and then turn the front dial at the same time, you can switch between modes: cats, dogs, birds, planes.

Thank you Wayne for your comment. Good question. If you have the OM-1 or the EM1X then when you use the bird AI, you just need to use CA-F.

Sorry, after watching twice, I still did not understand why I should set to menu 2, etc. What does the button do? I am not interested in birds, so should I forget about this 1,2 button?

What type of photography do you do? I like menu 2 for the lever because that allows me to switch from one focus point to all focus point and S-AF to C-AF by just switching the lever from 1 to 2.
