Changing Fluids in a John Deere A

When I was a kid one of my favorite things was to ride "the putt putt tractor" with Granddaddy. My grandfather's 1952 John Deere A sat in a shed for years since he died. He bought this tractor in about 1981 (no one in the family is certain) and used it while playing farmer in his retirement. I wanted to see if I could make it live again and the first step was changing out all the oils, transmission, rear end, engine and lift. This was last summer (2021) but I'm just getting around to putting the video together. The project is ongoing even though the tractor is currently running it isn't complete yet, and I'm still working on more videos.
If things go well over the summer with putting the tractor back together I'll be using it to run the cane mill in the fall when I make sorghum syrup, just like Granddaddy did every time when he was alive.

You'd be shocked at the sludge, rust, and dirt you'll find of you stick your longest finger up into the trans, reat axle, engine and coolent drain holes. Especially the engine. There is a screen around the oil punp and the only way you can see how bad its clogged with sludge is to remove the top cover plate next to the shifter. Plan to do that at an oil change after dropping the oil.. Blocked oil pickup at the pump will kill the engine.

The first reduction gear housing should have one pint (16 ounces)

And water does build up inside there in 60 days, no matter your climate Early A's and B's do not have drain plugs on the cover.

1:13 Good job ! Rule #1 Optain a A Operator's Manual, Read It. And do every maintenance operation, by the book. Your tractor will love you for it. Flush the crankcase, trans, rear axle, first reduction gear housing with diesel fuel or mineral spirits on your first revival session after a machine hasn't been serviced in decades. Trans/Rear axle should be SAE 90, not 140.

Everything I read it's 140 conventional.

I have a manual and I did read it. It does call for 90 weight in the rear, and I put in 85-140. I have flushed the crankcase but I didn't show it here. I will have to drain the rear again to replace several seals, perhaps I will flush it then.

Is the Transmission sump separate from the differential. Good job thanks for the info.

The transmission shares oil with the rear differential.

There is 7 gals. of sae 90 gear oil . Have 2 - 5 gal buckets to catch the oil which will dump out quickly!! The rear axle chamber fills and spills over into the trans chamber when you refill from that rear filler plug. Do it on level ground!
