Changing Gears in a manual car is one of the first skills you are taught when learning to drive. Eventually you do changes without thought, but there’s more to them than some people realise. Some parts of the world this is known as stick shifting.

That’s how I was told to do it years ago. And when pulling away, gas before clutch. Some cars (diesel and petrol) can slowly pull away using just the clutch pedal, but a lot will stall if you try that. With almost every major road round here having major roadworks and traffic lights, I’m very glad i drive an automatic.

Nice video and explanation of rev matching. Could you do a video on joining motorways from slip roads? I've been driving for around a year now and I'm constantly finding myself behind drivers who don't use the road to get up to speed and as a result join 70mph carriageways at 40-50mph and occasionally even lower. My only solution has been to hang back a good distance and accelerate quickly when they finally crawl onto the motorway. It would be nice if more people were informed on the matter. Your point about changing gear at 2000-2500rpm is interesting, I think a lot of people have this drilled into their head and as a result are scared to use the full rev range of their car. I think more instructors need to teach people about the usefulness of speed in appropriate situations. I feel like too many people are scared of their right foot.

Another cracking lesson. Good job! I agree rev matching systems are cheating. I have it on 2018 Civic Type R. Luckily I can turn it off. I think some “driver aids” make people lazy. I do think car technology should advance but they shouldn’t make the driver lazy. I would like to see car and phone manufacturers to implement a system that makes your phone unusable when you get in the car. Only incoming and outgoing calls allowed.

When you change up a gear you need fewer engine revs to match things up but you are speeding up! When you change down a gear you need more engine revs to match things up even though you want to slow down. This is not easily understood because you want to slow down and not always desirable if you are running out of road space. The technique is good for major roads approaching roundabouts but you want to be in second gear but 15/20 mph is a reasonable speed and you need to accelerate next. This is because of a much greater road and engine speed disparity. When you emerge onto a 30 mph road and do your "new road" mirror check, it may desirable to accelerate more in second and third gear using extra gas to 30 mph then select fourth at 30 mph if you see the traffic behind is catching sooner than anticipated and you do not want to force anyone to slow down. Speeding up to join a 70 mph dual carriageway will need higher revs on each gear change as you do not want to achieve fourth gear at 30 mph.

Nice clear explanation of rev matching Ashley. Btw did you ever notice that while almost every car idles with the rev needle just below 1k rpm, only at most modern diesel cars when you let the clutch pedal up slightly it automaticly jumps to exactly 1k rpm. This seems to be done electronicly and take away most difference between diesel and gasoline cars these days. I noticed students often expect the difference between handling diesel and gasoline powered cars to be huge, because theyr parents told them so, but they are still used to 10+years ago when 'giving way more gas in 1st gear while driving gasoline' was still a thing

Hello, cracking video as usual. With beginners I use the words FLIP and FLOP. Clutch-down-off-gas=FLIP On-gas-clutch-up=FLOP I find flip-flop reinforces the idea that feet are moving in opposite directions. I therefore use phrases such as "flip-2-flop" or "flip-3-flop". I also introduce rev-matching by stealth by saying "reduce gas" instead of "off gas".

Accelerator is a five syllable word, whereas gas is only one. Saying "gas" allows you to get through instruction more easily and quickly, especially when you have to do several things at the same time. I did a short course on educational psychology recently, and one of the things I learned was that if you make instructions overly wordy and complicated, people tend to glaze over and lose the massage. Using simpler language help get you point across more easily.

For many years now I have made a point of asking newly qualified drivers what they think the clutch actually does , in 8 out of ten cases they seem baffled , they simply do not know what it does ... So when I tell them it connects and disconnects the wheels from the engine , they are amazed , and say it explains a lot .. It would be a good idea to have a mechanical chat on the first lesson .. I saw one of your videos on Motorway driving earlier , and was very surprised to hear you ask if the trainee thought indication was needed on certain occasions .. It is needed on ALL Occasions you intend changing direction , whether the road is quiet or not .... They get into the habit of indicating then and takes one unnecessary decision away from their brain when they are concentrating on something , whether to use the indicators or not .. There will be many occasions in the new drivers 50 year driving future when this will catch them out .. when they thought it was clear to make a move so didn't bother with the indicators ,and it wasn't .. It could save an accident to indicate every time ... Mainly to cover the idiots , like the speeding motorbike coming around a corner and making a move to avoid you when you are about to join an "empty" Motorway or other junction ..... worth considering .. 50 years driving experience here , well over 700,000 miles driven on UK roads , no mishaps so far !

Can you set the gas right at the shift w/o letting off the gas completely? E.g. Throttle 25%; clutch in, throttle 15% immediately, and then clutch out. I've heard this from an advanced motorist, and I wonder if it's worth doing.

What about skipping a gear? I'm not super comfortable with miles, but I think you can do a 30 m/h in 5'th (depending on the car) especially in a diesel right? I often go 1 - 2 - 3 - 5 even in my petrol car, because I'm done accelerating, so I don't need the 4'th gear. If I'm accelerating to more than 30 then I do use the 4'th gear. What are your thoughts on skipping gears like that? I can see that it might not be relevant to a learner.

But why not change gears quickly enough to "catch" the engine before the RPM fall below what is required for the next gear?
@MichaelFlatman
@MichaelFlatman 5 жыл бұрын
that can work, but if you miss it then there is a small braking effect as the cars momentum needs to bring the engine back up, i'd say clutch out slightly before the rpm falls below that gear, then you still have the acceleration effect and can resume acceleration slightly more quickly (don't go overboard otherwise the car will jump forward upon lifting the clutch)
@Mr.M1STER

Some instructors tell their students to change up gears at 2,000 rpm for example. I think that is just a lazy way to teach and makes the student stare at the rev gauge more because they are always aiming for 2k revs rather than watching the road and learning how the engine should sound.

Don't you think 2,000 or more revs in a diesel is too high for a gear change? I have always changed gear at around 1300 or so if not less; I am driving a 2lt and idk if that makes a difference tho, when I have changed any higher I see a noticeable drop in my fuel economy and my aim when driving is to always have a good mpg.

Like with any other skill, to some people it comes easier than others. That's perfectly normal, just be sure to allow yourself the time and practice you require to become comfortable with the car and driving in general. Once you can easily shift without taking your eyes off the road, you'll notice it's not hard at all to shift while maintaining the right direction. Similarly with time, practice and experience you will learn to judge what an appropriate speed is for upcoming bends, corners, junctions, etc and be able to adjust your speed and gear beforehand. A good instructor can also help a lot. In this video Ashley explains the how and why of all the steps involved in a gear change. Once you've got the whole motion figured out you won't need to think through the whole process like that anymore, but breaking it down like this can help immensely in mastering the technique, because you know what your are doing and why you are doing it. That way you can also identify which step you need to alter in order to improve as well as which steps you have already perfected. Lastly don't be afraid to ask your instructor to spend some extra time on whatever it is that makes you tense up. Spending some time practicing one or two specific things on a parking lot with nobody else around to worry about and a professional next to you can make a real difference. Good luck and I hope you get to enjoy the fun relaxing side that driving can have :)

I had the same problem. I worked with my instructor specifically on this, and we came up with a trick that worked quite well. Normally while driving you're going through a few 'cycles' - things like Mirror Signal Maneouvre or things where you're constantly checking your road position, speed and mirrors every so often. What we did was add 'relax' to the end of those cycles. So, if I'm doing a mirror signal maneouvre, I add 'relax' to the end of that which reminds me to breathe and chill out for a second, keeping me a bit calmer. I found when I got tense I'd lean forward which reduced my peripheral vision and changed my perspective on all of my mirrors. By adding a conscious 'relax' step to all of my MSM, MSPSGL and 'position, speed, mirrors' cycles, I found I eventually wasn't as tense in general and it really helped overall. Also, just general confidence helps a lot - the more your drive, the more becomes muscle memory and the easier it all gets. I've had my license nearly a year now and am nowhere near as anxious as I used to be. Best of luck!

The correct method , as taught at police college , is the double declutch method , which forces students to pause in the middle of the gear change and allow revs to to match before selecting the next gear : when this is done correctly you can feel the gears go in more easily , and when you have perfected it , you can dispense with use of the clutch altogether , other than for starting or stopping . Gear changes should not be hurried .
