In this videos on Fix the XJ6 we make some good progress after many delays. we get the brakes sorted out ready to go back on and change the spark plugs, not the most simple job on an inline-four motorcycle engine.

Although experience has taught you what feels right when tightening plugs, I think for newbies in particular it would be worth suggesting they tighten to recommended settings (typically 11 Nm) with a torque wrench to prevent over-tightening.

Hi Spicy, At the end of the video you rattled off the remaining tasks, then quickly reminded yourself that the coolant needed doin. I think it would be a good idea to have a list of tasks to do on a whiteboard for instance, then tick them off as they are done. This would be good to show newbies, as it's very easy to overlook something. Must be difficult having to stop start the project, I feel for you.

Lmao I was literally thinking about buying you some the other day, because I kept noticing (and commenting lol) that you didnt have any, but then I thought how do I even do that if you dont have PO box anymore lol. My triumph I bought a t-handle special bendy spark plug socket cos those holes are a pain to get sockets in lol

That's just bad luck I think. I've had no delays with parts or deliveries from them for my 20 year old Yam. There are also Euro Car parts, ToolStation, ScrewFix, Halfords or places like that for torque wrenches etc.

I now own three torque wrenches as the Nm values I needed on the bikes I've owned kept changing 😭 Last one turned up quick from Amazon 👍👍 I wonder if the wrenches with smaller ranges are more accurate? Or stay in spec longer? Dunno.
@spicy110
@spicy110 3 жыл бұрын
Very possible large range is less accurate but tricky to test.

Would you not consider "fixing" the cushion drive rubbers iv been doing it for years but I'm a cheap bastard 🤣, cutting an old iner tube up and super gluing it in to build ther rubber back up, just a thought if ur struggling for parts
@spicy110
@spicy110 3 жыл бұрын
If I did that and showed it on video I would be ripped apart haha. The good news is I found the old ones that were ok but a bit old. I will use those for now to get the bike done and change them when they come in stock 🙂

I have sorted my issue with the brakes, it was just me not getting the first set of pads in just the right place and every time I put them on the bike the pad moved.

@turboturtle888 nice, thx 4 the info. Do I really have to remove the whole tank to change the spark plugs or do you just do it so that you can get to it more easily?
@turboturtle888
@turboturtle888 3 жыл бұрын
@@mstrmchl2996 you could tilt it back on the rear bolts and support with a block of wood, but there’s a small risk the tank could fall doing that FYI. I think I removed the tank when I did my plugs.

Big mistake spotted..... You didn't check & set the new spark plug gap to the manufacturer's recommended gap for the FJ6. A myth busting fact: SPARK PLUG GAPS ARE NEVER PRE-SET AT THE FACTORY!! This is because the same grade spark plug will fit in many different models of motorcycles & cars, all with different gaps settings. An example is that the old Suzuki GT 380 & GT 550 have a gap setting of 0.25" for the outside cylinder and 0.27" for the centre cylinder. The Yamaha RD250 uses the same spark plugs as a CZ 250, but the RD has a gap setting of 0.25" whilst the CZ, due to the far higher compression ratio, has a gap setting of 0.28".

I did check and they were the same, tho yes I could have mentioned this.
@steven-vn9ui
@steven-vn9ui 3 жыл бұрын
The difference it makes is negligible, however, a ham fisted home mech could cause damage to the plug by setting the gap. I'd say close enough is good enough (within reason of course). I realise this applies more to the fragile iridium plugs some bikes run now.

Such a stupid bike to work on, better than a MT07 but so stupidly designed for the maintenance. Side oil filter, after a crash my crash bars are bent so i cannot remove the filter, it takes 20-30 mins to change the spark plugs when on an er6n i literally did it in 8 mins. The cooling system is idiotic and unaccessible. It ain't the worst but there is so much space wasted

Try to remove throttle body on this bike, those 4 3mm hex position is fking retard, u need special or very long allen key to remove it, oh dont forget, u got broken TPS? thats right u need to remove throttle body, also they make the left side where your throttle cable mounted on throttle body easy accessable is you remove the bracket while the right side where's your TPS is weld shut.
