Changing Out A Nut On An Epiphone Les Paul Standard

Күн бұрынHey guys in this video I take way to long to change out a nut on my Epiphone, but the results were great as it now stays in tune after bending strings etc. Let me know what you guys do to your nuts... To help keep your guitar in tune. I find this is only a problem with Gibson style head stocks, my fenders tend to stay in tune.

Graph Tech has two choices for Les Paul nuts, one is for epiphone which is a metric so to speak and the other is for Gibson which is a standard. They're not interchangeable. Plus you can get an aged nut which would match the color of your binding.

I thought so myself but was wrong. I found out the hard way that 2014 and later is a totally different nut. I didn't know exactly what that meant bc mine is a 2014 so wtf lol. They need to be a little better at how they lay things out for people. I mean we shouldn't have to work so hard just to buy gear and upgrades right. Not have to seem like we're studying for barr exam

Usually when I swap out the nuts, I’ll clean out the nut slot with a slot file to remove any residual glue. I set the new nut in place and using a carpenters pencil which I beveled. I’ll lay the pencil along the first to third fret and trace a line along the nut closest to the finger board. This gives me a reference as to where the top of the first fret is in relation to the string slots on the nut. Then I’ll sand the nut down until the slots are 1/32” above the first fret. Restring to center the nut, mark the location of center, remove strings and glue in place.

Replaced my epi les paul plastic nut with a bone nut i purchased from amazon. They sell a variety pack of good quality bone nuts for just a few bucks. One of them fit the L.P perfectly. The bone nut sounds and feels so much better than the plastic!

It seems the tusq are better than the bone nuts, giving a better tone and sustain, but the winner by far for tone and sustain is a brass nut.

i usually string the two e strings...capo the third fret and measure relief...then sand down the bottom of the nut until i get what i want...before i glue it down...never hade to file the slots...yet

Its great that you were able to buy a pre-cut bone nut that only required light sanding to make it fit. I run into a lot of guitars that the string depth on some string is improperly cut,especially the G string which causes your notes to go sharp on the first and second frets. what a pain!

Count me in as one of that club. My Epiphone LP standard was born with a buzzing g string due to the cut. I lived with it for years until taking it to a luthier who fitted a bone nut. But he cut all the slots at half the height of the factory settings and killed the guitar (and charged me for the privilege). If you need a job doing, do it yourself… Thank you for the tips. Thank you, Rich, for uploading this vid, how has it been for you with the new nut? I did the same to take an SG nut out, but I dedicated 50' previously (after having wrapped the area with tape to avoid scratches on the wood) to taking carefully, all the glue I could, out from between the wood and the nut; then, with a soft tap of plastic hammer with a block of wood on the fingerboard against the nut and...there it was... Old nut out. Now I have to choose a new nut, and I don't know which one... Not yet.

U can get those rubber strap locks on amazon , fender n others hav em for not much for a handful . I think most tusq nuts will need adjusting, hav to b carful its easy to go to far or sand uneven . I like em when they are rt . Live n learn .

The reason gibsons/epiphones go out of tune is because they dont have a straight string pull through the nut. Thats why fenders stay in tune way better. There is a thing (i forget what its called) you can put on the face of the headstock to create a straight pull through for a gibson/epiphone that will solve the tuning issues.

Theres a gadget out there called the string butler. It sits above the nut. I use one on all my les pauls. Now they never go out of tune.

Was inspired by this video to try to change the nut on a 2005 Epiphone Les Paul. Got a bone nut :) from Great Britain #NWGuitars that was a little more broad and a little shorter. Put some Polyfilla plastic wood with mahogany color on the bottom and sanded it until it essentially matched the height of the old nut. Whole process went very well, thanks 😃

I've my first bone nut on guitar which is the China 2019 lake placid blue new model Classic vibe. And its the only one giving me tuning issues. I suppose I need to get it cut better and i want to put 10s on it as soon as possible.

Hey i just bought tonight one myself for my 2014 standard pro. I got the tusq xk graphite one. So I wanna ask what year is your LP standard. Maybe I can know if I ordered the correct one and if not then maybe I can make the correction before they ship it and gotta wait for it then ship back and blah blah.
