Having managed not to annihilate the car nor having not died in a billowing fire ball of a crash doing my own brakes in the last video, I am now extremely cocky. Unbearably so. So I’m raising my game to the giddy heights of doing a complete tune-up! Hell yeah! I’ll show you how to get your car running so much more smoothly! I’ll even show you what a misfire sounds like so, if you car is making that noise, you’ll know one way of fixing it!
Again, I have bought all the parts: spark plugs, spark plug tubes and coil packs. Watch me bodge yet another perfectly easy job, reduce good new parts to their constituent metals, throw good money after bad and then decide to get someone to it for me just after I have hit the bloody thing with a hammer. No doubt I’ll sell the car immediately afterwards in a fit of pique too. Bloody thing. Or did I do it very easily? Watch and find out! (Although I know where my money is).
You can download all my Porsche model guides at www.jayreadyoutube.com so go and take a look there, OK?
Why not follow me on Instagram too? I am a CAR guy first and I get around so take a look at the reels and pictures that I take because you might like them! Also you get news on my own Porsche, my MG and other life events there before KZfaq! Look for jayreadyoutube on Insta now!
Here is the kit that I used that FCP Euro supplied: www.fcpeuro.com/products/pors...

Great job 👏 I’ve changed the ones on my 997 which was a pain due to the exhaust, it looks like there’s slightly more room on the Boxster? A better design to be honest. The torque on the coil pack bolts is 7.5ft lbs. I didn’t have a torque wrench small enough so I just done the same, nice and tight, although keep in mind the low 7.5 setting. It looks like you had the newer type coil packs which means you had longer bolts supplied. The old coil packs were prone to cracking so they made the body of the coil pack thicker on the new one hence longer bolts. Good job with the tube and butt plug 😅. I’ve not replaced these tubes before? If you remove and replace the spark plug with the tube out is there a risk if the plug dropping down where the tube should be?? Ie should you have fitted the tube back and then fitted the plug?? I’m not sure as I’ve never done it but I probably would have put the new tube in first? I couldn’t see any axel stands on camera? Did you use them? If not then I would next time, you here lots of stories about jack’s failing. Good job

I would recommend pulling the plug prior to pulling the tube. you do not want to be fishing bits out of the block.

Good job Jay. Done this several times. Nice to see you loving the Boxster back to top shape. Remind people to be safe and use jack stands as safety backup. Yup spark plugs first then tube, either way you managed it well! Keep up the great videos.

If you still have your tool kit there should be a bar with a threaded end. This is a wheel hanging tool that makes dismounting and (especially) mounting the wheels much easier.

Just curious re the installation part of the process. No issues with the removal process but would you have been better off bolting down the coil pack for the middle cylinder last as it would free up more working space to get at the bastard cylinder. Hope this makes sense….
@JAYREAD
@JAYREAD 2 жыл бұрын
Haha! It is a bastard too! No. The problem is not being able to see and doing everything by feel. There’s enough space between the coil packs.

Great work! This was the first job I did on my 996. It was a bitch. Access is a lot better on the 986…in hindsight I would have manned up and removed the mufflers.

Question... could a plug fall into the valve cover without the spark plug tube in place?
@JAYREAD
@JAYREAD 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t know. I wouldn’t think so. However, another subscriber commented that you could lose bits of the tube in there if you took the plug out first.

why wouldn't you remove the plugs before removng the tubes? I seems like they could drop in the pan?

Great video. TBH, I'm concerned about all that oil in the tubes. Where did it come from? It's obviously leaking down on the rest of the motor as well. It's always something, isn't it?
@JAYREAD
@JAYREAD 2 жыл бұрын
Isn’t it?! They tell me it’s the valve cover gasket. Does that sound right? I’m hoping that the improved O rings on the new spark plug tubes will help.
@Bonspieler
@Bonspieler 2 жыл бұрын
@@JAYREAD More than likely. I have a 997.1 and I can't even imagine what a job that would be with the motor in the middle. But that is a fair amount of oil leaking out. Were the other cylinders as bad?
@JAYREAD
@JAYREAD 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bonspieler Not sure. I didn’t look inside each of them. The valve cover gasket will get done soon and that will hopefully sort it.

you will want to retorque the spark plugs after 1000 miles. If you do not do this they will produce a chirp eventually at cold start. I spent days attempting to find the reason why my car made a chirping noise at cold start. I retorqued the plugs and the chirp went away.
