UPDATE: I took you with me (via KZfaq) to the garage yesterday. I put you on loud speaker, set out my tools and commenced to replacing my plugs along with you. I went step by step with your virtual presence and can proudly announce that I did it!! I completed this tedious task successfully because of your outstanding online assistance. I cannot thank you enough. Side note: I did change my air filter in 3 minutes as well. My car is running like new. TRUTH

Wow...I cannot even begin to tell you how grateful I am for your video on changing the spark plugs on my Smartie. I have a lovely fully loaded convertible 2009 Passion ForTwo that purchased from a one owner in 2016 that I am plug replacing today. Being a divorced gal in my 50's, I don't have the hands of a fella readily available to do these tasks. However, being retired military (2010), male hands have never been a requirement for my success, BUT in this case, your hands have visually provided a truly outstanding "how-to" tutorial so that my mission will be accomplished with greater ease. You are an absolutely brilliant teacher. Thanks a million

Used car just bought. I was able to get the first 10 mm screw out with 10mm socket on a 3/8 inch drive even though the hose was there. The hose was on real tight and I didn't want to break it. I am not 100% sure the 10 mm screw was tight to begin with because it unscrewed right away and I had No tightness to it like a tight screw should have on breaking it loose. ( I checked the other two 10 mm screws and they are tight for true) Once I discovered this, I tried and was able to unscrew it by hand. When I put it back, I'm gonna add a couple of locking washers so it will sit up a little higher so hopefully the wrench will sit in it properly so I can tighten it down good. Thank you so much for the video and advice sir!

Thanks for your video. I am in the UK and have a 2011 ForTwo. I read in my manual the spark plugs need to be changed at 62,000 miles which is around 100,000 KM as you mentioned. I guess these are the Platinum long life type. Thanks for the tips on the tools required. I have most tools but maybe not the socket. Cheers.

Tip: Remove all three 10mm bolts first, then remove and replace each spark plug and coil pack one at a time, to reduce the risk of anything dropping into one cylinder while you are working on the next.

Instead of a rubber boot 5/8 spark plug socket, can a magnetic 5/8" spark plug socket be used? After getting the diagnostic triage repair estimate ( a bit expensive from Mercedes-Benz, but Worth it, at least once every 3-4 years) (I tend to use the Olympics as a guide ( summer or winter, either one works, to measure the passage of time.) 😉 Anyways, getting back to the MB LIST, 2 of her spark plugs need replacing. For my Girlfriend's, 2013 Smart Fortwo Pure, but didn't know, enough, about the placement of where things were, for her car. Like My '07 Honda Odyssey ( Which I've named the Millennium Falcon, on account of all the "Special Modifications " I've made to her). I'm going to replace, whatever plugs are in there, with NGK Iridium Spark plugs, which should last a very long time in her car. 😉 Your presentation style, was spot on, especially for DIY'ers like myself, and loved the little tips you presented. Kudos for that! 😊

Did you get it changed? The hose can be a Pain because there isn't much room to pull it off the filter top. I had to use a length of pipe to help pry mine off. (I'm a tiny guy with not much strength) Once you get it off and replace the new filter I find it helps if you put the hose on the top Before you place the top down. When putting the top back on with the hose attached, grab the top on both sides and wiggle it side to side as you push it back into place. You should feel it drop into place when it seats properly and then you'll find the 3 clips you need to put back on line up and snap in easily. I suppose you can also unclip the 3 clips first then manipulate the top and the hose if you have trouble getting the hose off instead of using a pry bar. I just changed my air filter a few minutes ago and I'm sharing what I found works best for me. As small fellow, I have to figure out how to do things a little differently at times.

You can always use the coil to get the spark plug out. Just reach down there with the coil and snap onto spark plug and get it out of there.

I pushed it down and twisted counter clockwise for quite a while before giving up and pulled out the coil & tried it on the new spark plug outside of the car to see how it would work but it didn’t latch on or snap. I have a 2008 Smart Fortwo Passion Cabrio. In my manual it says on page 300 under Electrical System "Electrode gap 0.035 in (0.9 mm)" so that's what I'm using. My new plugs are Autolite Iridium XP, for $8.00 US dollars each. These are Not Pre Gaped so if you buy these make sure you have a spark gap tool and know how to use it. All 3 plugs were factory gaped way lower, you'll need to increase the gap to 0.035.
@carquestions
@carquestions 3 жыл бұрын
Autolite says they come pre-gapped at .032" so I wouldn't bother changing them
@DivergentDroid
@DivergentDroid 3 жыл бұрын
@@carquestions My main point here was to let you know where the info is found in your manual. I think you are mistaken. The box on these states, quote, "Important: Check spark plug catalog for proper application, torque specs and gap setting. Set gap before installing" No where on the larger box that contains 4 plugs nor on the boxes of individual plugs does it say they are pre gaped. Also, why would you Not set the gap to the proper engine specs? To me, that sounds like asking for trouble.
@carquestions
@carquestions 3 жыл бұрын
@@DivergentDroid The box might not state it but it states it on their website - also when making them they have to set them to some initial setting it stands to reason it wouldn't be random - and .003" won't make any difference at all and trying to move the ground electrode .003" on all 4 plugs is more of a risk than leaving them alone
@Born_Stellar
@Born_Stellar Жыл бұрын
the gap in the manual is also for the stock plug only. companies make different plugs and sometimes the different gap is part of the design. you haven't needed to gap spark plugs now for about 20 years.
