Replacing the 6.00x16 front tire on my 1955 Ford 860 tractor. Breaking the bead without special tools, demounting the old tire and mounting the new tire. This procedure can be applied to change a tire on any vehicle. This was my first attempt at changing a tire and I learned a lot. See the links below for the parts and tools I used:

Since this video, I've had success breaking the bead by running over the edge of the tire with a truck. I've also placed the bottom of a scissor jack on the tire and the top on a truck frame and cranked open the jack to break the bead. Basically, you just need to be able to put a good amount of weight on the tire without damaging the rubber.

For breaking the bead on a Ford tractor tire, if you don't have a better solution, use the wheel hubs. The edge around the hubs is narrow. Place the wheel under the hub, with the hubs edge lined up with the tire's bead. Lower the jack, which lets the hub's edge push down into the bead, and the weight of the tractor will break the bead. Jack it up, rotate the wheel, and let the jack back down. Repeat until it's finished. You can do the same with the back wheels. Remove the outer rim and tire. Put it under the inner rim, and use that to break the bead.

I have to do this on my 1952 Fordson Major before the snow comes. Never done it on a tractor before. Only done it on my dirtbike several times. When getting the last side of the tire back into the rim, it's easy to accidently pinch the tube between the rim and the spoon. Sucks to have put everything together only to realise your tube is leaking. Nice video
@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 4 жыл бұрын
It should be very similar to your dirt bike tires, hopefully a bit easier. I've done 1 front tire and 2 rear rims on my tractor and have been lucky not to pinch the tubes. Thanks for watching!

@@Mikeattempts Yeah i saw that video to. Good job. Nice tractor as well. My tires are all dried and cracked (originals i think) but i will only fix the tube in the right front tire which won't fill at the moment. Great channel btw, i have already found several helpfull videos. Not only tractor related

Drive a car or truck tire up onto the 2x4 to break the bead. Less work.

@@Mikeattempts Another tip when replacing a tube on a used tire. Feel around inside the tire for sharp edges, when you find it, sand it down with sandpaper.

Try to use your front bucket to remove the bead
@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea but the cylinders that control my front bucket are single acting. So, I only have hydraulic pressure for lifting and gravity brings it back down. I don't think it'd be enough pressure to break the bead unless I loaded up the bucket with rocks or something heavy.

This may be a strange question but do you happen to have any pics of the old tire side wall? I haven’t seen those dual rib tires since I was a kid and was wondering what brand that was. My dad had those on his old Ford tractor back in the 70’s. Thanks.

At 0:47, when I'm removing the tire, you can just make out that it's a Firestone. I'm unable to read anything else though and I no longer have the tire. I'm not sure but it might have been the original. Thanks for watching!

How much should I tighten the bolts when i re install a front tire tractor? I did it as much as i could by hand and then pushed down a bit more with my foot. is that good?
@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it sounds like you got them tight enough. I think the front wheel lug nuts are supposed to be tightened to around 105 foot-lbs and 150 foot-lbs for the rear wheel lugs.

@@Mikeattempts I have a 50 8n ford tractor. Mine has 19 on front I did buy a set of 16 in rim's. For the 6 16 . In thinking about putting the 5.5 16 on it. Little thinner. I have trailers and trucks . I got my tire changer 5 years ago. It's been a money saver. Learned, to modify it some with rubber protection and solid pieces between then blade that pushes down. Made a world of difference.
