Every year, almost as many black males are killed in Oakland, California, as graduate high school ready for college. But the country’s first public school program developed specifically for African American males is changing that equation.

I don't think people realize how much a persons surrounding circumstances can affect a child's ability to succeed. Great work placing these kids in a environment to succeed!

I cannot explain how happy I am after seeing this. I'm not Black. But I'm tired of seeing people bash on the black Identity with thugs,low lifes etc. Lets hope this grows into a bigger higher educated black community.

laetrille I said bash on the black Identity. You can't call all black people thugs, All Germans Nazi's etc. I've been raised in low income residential areas with thugs of Arab,Black and Hispanic and a high Income area where the black population was not that bad. But the kids were trying to be thugs cause they thought it was cool. We need to stop labeling them thugs so we can stop this cycle.

I think both are great. Trade skills are amazing but so is becoming a doctor, a nurse, a lawyer. Unfortunately, college is the only way to obtain those skills. Wouldn't it be nice to have a trade school to become a doctor, a nurse, etc. But those fields take a lot of book learning and studying. Maybe there could be a way to come up with a mentoring program for the " higher education " careers.

I would love to have the opportunity to talk to and get inside the minds of young black males. How do I go about getting their attention and finding out what it is they want. For example one of my dreams is to have a program that teaches them day trading as a means to build wealth. What are some strategies needed to hold their attention long enough to ignite their passions?
@azuzajones6654
@azuzajones6654 7 жыл бұрын
If they really wanted to learn how to build wealth, they would have done it. I'm 23(about to be 24) and I've been studying the stock market since I was 18. I remember turning on the TV and bloomberg was on and I thought to myself "people must make a lot of money doing this". I got books from the library and got to studying. I followed the greatest investor (Warren Buffet) and and read Graham and Dodd. Young people aren't retarded. If they want to learn how to do something, they should step out and learn it, simple.
@azuzajones6654
@azuzajones6654 7 жыл бұрын
They go have sex when they want to. If they wanted to learn about trading or investing, they could just take their ass to the library like I did. What's stopping them? They just don't care.

+azuza jones ok I've specifically asked for strategies to keep these young men's attention and I was hoping to get responses from people who actually worked with them. Nothing you wrote was of any value to me. However, if you came to ventabout how little you think of them nor like them then please do it with someone else. This is solely MY time, money and energy that I plan to devote to them so it should be of ZERO concern to you.
@azuzajones6654
@azuzajones6654 7 жыл бұрын
+lamarjlp914 I'M JUST SAYING, I'M ONE OF THEM (young black man). No one had to form a "strategy" for me to take my ass to the library. I just dicided I wanted more out of life and wanted to strive for it. If these idiots can look at these rappers, they can look at Warren and Gate's. I sincerely mean no offense. Good luck on your venture. I may be coming from the wrong angle, I guess I just wanted to let off some steam.

The sick part is, education doesn't help black men or boys succeed. It only regulates them into certain positions in European dominated society. So, no matter how many jobs we get we're still a part of the system which routinely and methodologically disenfranchises black males from having jobs regardless of their socioeconomic or educational status. What this means is that no matter which one of us gets a job it still won't get any of us out of our situation and that any one of us that does receive one of these jobs instead of the hell that's being offered to the rest of us is simply helping the system overcome the rest of us...

My concern about such programs are: -They seem to seldom take the needs of girls into consideration thus making boys a priority. What an ugly message that send to black girls. How do people think they can improve a community without giving equal consideration to all its members? -I've never known such programs to teach black kids that what happens to them is the product of structural racism and that political engagement= good citizenship. They should believe they can and have an obligation to change things.-Many such programs use recuperative masculinity as a model to teach boys. This concept says there is something inherently wrong with boys that stigmatizes them as problems rather than looking at the barriers that lead to mass incarceration, under education, mass unemployment, and illegal economies. Black kids need to be taught there is nothing wrong with them by their parents and communities which is the opposite of what they learn even from well meaning people.

I hear we have to help all young black men, but we have to build the family again. We have to stop the single mother house hold and encourage family. We have to speak of god. We have to stop a mind set of victim hood. We have to use the mindset if something knocks me down, i got to get up again. Blaming other ppl like white men. ok, but in the end does it further anything? I use to blame the white man for all the ills in my life, till i realized we are all individuals and no one will help me if i never take responsibility for my life and blame others. I even blamed everyone for things i did, cuz it made me feel better. Then i woke up, found god, found who the true enemy is. Now i live my life by being an example and encourage all young men to be better, do better and follow god

Maybe it’s the single parents lack of care for the kid.

If blacks are more likely to be suspended they should be more civil, if they are underperforming then they should be more assiduous, if they are viewed as a threat they should work to rewrite their image for the better. These are all things that is their fault, there's no "rigged system". Asian-Americans are a testament to this.

Democrats aint gonna like this at all. A young black man reading? Democrats want you in the same spot as before since 1920’s -all voting Democrat. Poor, illiterate, on welfare, pregnant, live in the hoods, so long as you vote Democrat. You wander off, they will send Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to keep u in line.

Well, they sometimes blame single parents, but even with a single parent Asian kids still do much better than blacks at any level of the education system.
