Delvin good afternoon from Cornwall, hope you’re well? Question if I may? Is it up to the DM how he uses his “stick” (- please forgive wording as I’m unaware what the correct terminology is !). Some carry, some use like a walking stick, some hold across their chests ? Agree with a previous poster, this band were sounding beautifully crisp👍👍

@@doraldeddy1836 Hello Dorald! I'm doing well! Thanks for asking! Hope you're well! And hello to Cornwall! Yes a Drum Major chooses what Drill movement he wants to do with his Staff while on Parade. The Stick is called a 'Staff' not a mace as most people might think, a mace is the civilian version. The common one is the 'Carry' which is when the Staff is held across the chest. The other is the 'Swing' this one is when the Drum Major swings the Staff out and in, next would be the 'Trail', which is used when the band is not playing or when the Drum Major wants to do the 'State Walk', which is when the DM will move the mace to his right hand and then lower it level to the ground for 6 paces in the 'Trail', then he'll begin the 'State Walk' by bringing the Staff forward and will use it as you stated like a walking stick. Something to also bare in mind is that every Drum Major has their own unique style, so some of the 'Staff' drill might look different to other Drum Majors' Drill. I agree the band did sound particularly good! Apologies for such a long comment! But I hope it Help! Greeting from the USA!

Hello Geoff! I'm glad that my answer was helpful! To answer your question about the HCav Band Corporal Major (BCM), In Winter Order the (BCM) Carries a Riding Whip under the left arm, which is the equivalent to a DMs Staff for the HCav Band. But in Summer Order he does not as he has to Carry his Sword in the left hand, Since the HCav have their swords connected to the end of the Sword slings, as opposed to the top of their Buff Belt itself. This means their Swords hang lower, so in turn the (BCM) has to carry his Sword. Otherwise it would drag across the pavement. In Winter Order He does not carry his sword. Instead he carries a Riding Whip under his Arm which is the equivalent to a DMs Staff, Since the HCav doesn't have DMs but (BCMs). The (BCM) uses his right Hand to signal, Mark Time, Music Cut-Off, Counter March, Left or Right Wheels, etc. Hope this Helps and Makes sense! I do apologize for the extremely Long Comment!

the army bands play many marches from all over the world. bravura is a standard for the british army.

Yes they could. All members of the band undertake military training and physical fitness tests a few times a year including load carriage exercises. If they are on parade then they can do all of those things whilst also performing to high musical standard!

it doesn’t matter!!! as long as they are doing their job properly, thats the important part. though i do understand what you mean, it can look odd sometimes.

@@militaryevents107 Ah, I knew someone would say this. It does matter. I would suggest you take a look at past Trooping of the Colour events from the 1930’s till the late 80’s and you’ll see the effect it presents. Tall soldiers have always been admired and when you think of the concept of why pageantry exists, the show counts. You obviously were not a former guardsmen so naturally you think it’s not important. But glad you actually agree.

@@yahyahussein425 yeah I do get what you mean, it looks odd, especially in the guard ranks, but in the band I think it is less important, the band has never had as much restrictions as the guards.

@@militaryevents107 I’m afraid I have to correct you on this. In the ‘options for change’ that took place in 1993, the recruitment of the Guards changed dramatically. Race, gender and downsizing of the battalions occurred. Bandsmen until then were full soldiers. After this time, women were allowed to enter the band and the height required of a minimum of 5’10 entry was abolished. Now a good deal of the bandsmen are not required to go on active service when their battalions get sent overseas.
