The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas alongside the Pipes and Drums of the Queen's Gurkha Signals and the Band of the Welsh Guards supporting the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace on Friday 26th April 2024.
00:00 Scotland the Brave/Highland Laddie (Gurkha Band and Pipes)
01:30 Viribus Unitis (Gurkha Band)
03:46 Atholl Highlanders/Cock O North (Gurkha Band and Pipes)
05:02 Machine Gun Guards (Welsh Guards Band)
07:19 Glorious Victory (Gurkha Band)
08:36 Scotland the Brave (Gurkha Band and Pipes)
09:19 Blue Devils (Welsh Guards Band)
11:36 The Contemptibles
The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas were under the direction of their Director of Music Captain Hayes and the Band of the Welsh Guards under the direction of Bandmaster WO1 Shave.
Personal note:
The crowds were exceptionally large for a Friday in April, summer is near and sadly causing the gaps in coverage from the guard change usually filmed on this channel! A delight to hear the Brigade of Gurkhas on parade and playing one of my favourite light marches 'Viribus Unitis' when marching up the mall towards Buckingham Palace. Not to be confused with the Austrian march of the same name!

My grandfather's last posting was with a company of Ghurkas. He was proud to have served with them as he considered them the finest and bravest warriors. When he was demobbed they presented him with a kukris, which he displayed in his living room.

My Dad served with 7th Gurkha in Hong Kong. Like yours, he loved the "Johnnies", and they presented him with a kukri when he left. I had my eye on it... and the old bugger gave it to my American brother-in-law.😳😤

Another Winner here Mr MBE! I've watched the Brigade of Gurkha Band doing the Windsor Guard, I thought they were great there, but unfortunately it's quite a quick March up & back & you don't get the enjoyment of being to watch all the Peripheral Goings on. So this is a great Opportunity to watch how they put it all together so to speak. Well' that would normally be the case, but the Brigade of Gurkhas Band & their Guard Detachment turn the exercise into a Short parade Naturally Marching in their Unique Style from SJP to Buckingham Palace. Of course that means I have a host of Questions, so hopefully people far more knowledgeable than me can help me out. I do know their ppm rate is 140 for Quick March & the fact they don't have a Slow March ppm that we would recognise, but the do drop their ppm to 120. The Normal Rate for the for the HH Division Bands is 116 ppm & 65 ppm. I also know that the Gurkhas have mounted the Guard before at Windsor & BP, under the Aegis of The Paras & they Marched at the 116/65 Rate behind the HHD Bands. I also know the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas, were Approved to provide Musical Support for the Guard Changes in 2022, they were due to do the Changes in October. With The Queen Dying, it was put on hold & then it was decided they would Start early this Year. All this information came from the Forces Network, they also had a report from 2015, when the Band did a Special Guard Change (Under the Same Rules as a Visiting Commonwealth Band has) with the Guard Mounted by the Queen's Own Royal Gurkha Logistic Regiment, on the Occasion of the 200th Anniversary of the Gurkhas becoming part of the British Army. These things I know but my Questions are; Is this the First time the The Gurkhas Band provided Musical Support for the Guards Mounted by The Gurkha Regiment? & the Guards Mounted by The Footguards Regiments? Does The Gurkha Brigade/Regiment have a Regimental March? A Couple of Questions for the Musicians; How Difficult is it for The Gurkha Band to have to play the same Marchs in the Tempo for their Guard & to adjust to the Tempo when they're leading Guard Detachments from the Foot Guards? The Gurkha Band is Excellent, I've heard them Playing as a Static Band (Mr B's Video last year of the Premier Screening of The Movie "Gurkha") & as a Marching Band. However, they sound very different to the other Bands. I hate Criticising any of the Bands, I have a Huge Amount of Respect for all the Musicians, they're all incredibly Talented. This Band has nowhere near the Depth of Sound, that Richness that you hear in the HH Bands or the BA Bands. Why would that be? I've not got the knowledge of how the different Layers of Sound are achieved to be able to work out 'Why' they sound so different but I'm sure it's not an Arrangement thing. The rest of this Brilliant Video is pure Vanilla. I'm pretty sure that's DM Stu Laing leading out the Welsh Guards, with Jonathon Lockwood (Sgt?) on the Bass Trombone earning his Nickname of "The Man with the Lungs of Steel", he's very Good but I still thing Brother David (IG) has the Edge. The whole Welsh Band sounds Brilliant. It may only be a Psychological thing, but when they Parade in the Iconic Red Tunics, Marches like 'Machine Gun Guards' seems to sound Lighter & Brighter than when they're wearing the Athol Grey Greatcoats. I think the New Guard is Mounted by The Scots Guard, I didn't see a Bearskin Plume & I couldn't see well enough to count Buttons, they looked very well turned out & I'm sure they appreciated the Pipes & Drums of the Queen's Gurkha Signals. 'Viribus Unitis' is a New March for me & it could make it to my List of Favourites very Quickly, lovely & bright & dare I say it 'Bouncy'! Glorious Victory is another of my Favourites & The Gurkha Band did it Justice as well as Showing their Versatility in leading the Old Guard of Gurkhas at the Standard Quick March Tempo back to Barracks. What a Great Video & Great Sights & Sounds to your Normal Great Standard Mr MBE. I do hope we get to see more of The Gurkhas, they're a Crowd Favourite & quite rightly so. Thanks for sharing this, Greatly appreciated!.

Hello Vicky! Hope you're doing well! To answer your questions, the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas have previously provided musical support for Guard Mounts, in which a Gurkha Regiment was posted to public duties. In 2019 the Band provided musical support for 36 Engineer Regiment Queen's Gurkha Engineers. During that time they also led the Guards from and to Barracks, which they did at 116-120BPM. The Gurkhas do indeed have a Regimental quick march, called "Yo Nepali" it's full name is "Yo Nepali Seer Uchali". It was played in 2022 when they provided musical support. It's a spiffing march, if I may say so! I do love "Viribus Unitis"! Hope this answers your questions!

Thanks Vicky once again for the kind comments, I’m glad you appreciate the video! Both correct answers by Delvin. The Gurkha Band have actually been becoming a regular feature on the palace forecourt in recent years. The Band and Bugles of the Rifles will also be assisting in the Queen’s Gurkha Signals stints on public duties this year so expect to see them providing musical support for the troops at light speed soon too. Every band has their own unique sound and ways of playing. All the Household Division bands use brass instruments and the bands of the Royal Marines and light infantry (including Gurkhas) use silver, even something as little as this can change the tone and makes it sound brighter…and not as deep!! The Gurkhas also have their own unique story as to how they play their instruments, many not actually joining as musicians and only after completing Gurkha basic training, they get assigned to the band as their unit where only then they start learning their instrument. Good to hear you also enjoy Viribus Unitis, a very lively and bouncy march. I think it’s almost quite cheeky sounding, plenty of character!!

Thanks for sharing this footage! Silly question maybe, but I’ve seen various Drum Majors salute the Household Cavalry detachment as it passes on a couple of videos: why do they do that (especially as there doesn’t appear to be any acknowledgment/salute back)?
@MilitaryBandsEverywhere
@MilitaryBandsEverywhere Ай бұрын
Good question. If you look carefully as the cavalry ride past you can see them giving an ‘eyes right’ towards the band. They are in fact saluting the colour of the new guard. The angle on this video makes it hard to see, but they are in fact paying the compliment. Obviously when the cavalry ride with a standard during a long guard at Horse Guards due the sovereign residing, the guards then also pay the complement to them likewise.

Hi Denis, thanks for your feedback it’s much appreciated! Although, I run this channel called ‘Military BANDS Everywhere’ to document and share the traditions of military band performances and the music that they play hence the main focus not being on the guard. There are lots of other channels that follow the guard so I’m sorry I don’t feature them as much but as I say, my aim is to document the band and music performed specifically.

Gee... The Description on the Door says... "Changing the Guard - The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas and The Band of the Welsh Guards". That roughly Translates to it's the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas & the Band of the Welsh Guards at the Changing of the Guard Parade. The Channel is called Military Bands Everywhere. Why would you expect to see the Guards? Try the King's Guard Channel or a Channel Advertising Watching the Guards. There are quite a Number of Vlogs done by Squaddies that covers their own Regiment, including The Household Cavalry & their 2 Regiments.
