Changing the RAM and Keyboard in a Lenovo T430 laptop

I had some issues with my Lenovo T430 lately so I thought that I'd swap out some parts. This video is of me taking out the ram from underneath the keyboard and replacing it.
This video should give you an idea of how to remove / replace the keyboard and access the ram underneath it to upgrade your memory.

Thank you sir! I just added 16gb or ram to my "New" T430... Your video was very helpful and I might change out my dvd drive some day. I still burn dvds due to football and other things I film. Thanks again... :-)

I think your old laptop only needed a new charger. The mouse going crazy when plugged in is a common issue with a cheap or faulty charger.

I only use the original Lenovo charger that it came with. I noticed it with 2x T430's but not with my T450s

Yeah I've seen that occur when I used to repair thinkpads at an old job....voltage problems cause seemingly random issues, time for a new block.

me too.. but I sold it and went with a T450s . 512GB SSD / 12GB ram / Touchscreen. Paid $400 CDN for it since it had a small crack in the display but mine sits in a dock 90% of the time so that crack doesn't effect my usage.

@@MikeDancy I was very fortunate to find a very lightly used T430, and I mean very lightly used, for $130. I updated with 16 gigs of ram and a 500 gig SSD. It already had the 1600 x 900 display and back-lit keyboard. The previous owner always had it docked so the power adapter was still wrapped from the factory. The keypad, trackpad, and display look like they were never used. Love this machine. It is almost as fast as my other i7 laptop (this one is the i5). These machines are fun to own and play with.

@@moldingpro7208 I got exactly the same great option only now in 2022 :) The only thing I don’t like is the hum of the fan. Everyone writes that this is a problem for many T430s. How are you doing with this?

I don't think that it can go any higher than 16GB of ram (2x8)

Hi, did you sold the faulty machine already? have you tried to downgrade the bios to see if this is what cause the electrical issue?

16gb of ram I think is overkill, I upgraded my T430 cpu from i5-3320M to i7-3740QM Quad Core and it's running 8gb (2x4gb) perfectly fine

@@wolverineneo101 No, but is not worth it anymore unless your find the 3740qm for $25 at most, the iGPUs indeed super weak there is no way I'd pay $75 again, the 3rd gen i7 is also getting behind as well, being only 4c/8t cores gets pretty toasty at times, you better off investing in a new modern laptop in 2021 with 6c/12t or 8c/16t with powerful iGPUs, just saying

I've got a T430 (3.1 GHz i5 dual core) that has 8 GB only in the bottom slot. I see the SODIMMs for these are almost free now, so I'm going to do what I've thought about as long as I've had this machine: upgrade the RAM. Had to see how to get the keyboard off. Might also have to prowl eBay for one of those DVD replacement caddies (and of course plan to upgrade the original platter drive to an SSD). This would be a much more usable machine with 16 GB and an SSD main storage -- and I can get an external DVD+-RW for not much money. I wonder if there's one that will plug into the PCMCIA slot (which I'll never use for anything else these days). It'd be a good bit faster than USB 2.0. And then it'll be time to upgrade from Ubuntu MATE 16.04 to Kubuntu 22.04... I've got the 6s main battery and a wedge battery, so I've got lots of battery life (multiple hours at full draw). Now, if I could find out for sure if this machine has a GPU slot, I'd love to add an nVidia...

I think you’d have to run the S/N at the Lenovo site to verify which video chip it has

@@MikeDancy All the type and s/n data is worn off the data plate label on the bottom of the machine. :( But I did find a reference that says the GPU in a T430 is soldered in if present. My internal checks say I have an i7-3520, 2.9 GHz standard up to 3.6 GHz max, looks like about the best CPU these ever got. I should probably redo the thermal paste while I have the keyboard off for the RAM upgrade, and then spend my effort and money upgrading the storage.

@@MikeDancy Yes, and I keep forgetting to do that when I have the laptop and another connection to the web. But I've gotten the understanding that in general the GPU in these was soldered in, so if present, it would detect from Kubuntu and I'd have been prompted to install the nVidia drivers if there were one. I can live with it; I don't game on this machine with any frequency anyway.

There is a whole Facebook group called “Thinkpads Old and New” they talk about this kind’ve stuff all the time. You may want to look at a w530, since it has the video card.

@@MikeDancy Yes I do have to reset the clock. I just ordered a new cmos battery from amazon. I'm so glad I saw your video because I saw that it was very easy to change that model Lenovos CMOS battery. I will let you know how the new battery works out. Thanks so much for your videos. They are very good and helpful.

Hi Mike. Put in the missing cmos battery. After 8 dollars and 3 hours of start up problems it finally works. I can finally pull the plug and not have to set the time when I restart. Yay! Thanks again!

Out of interest; what do you use the laptop for that 16gb RAM helps with? Also, how do you find the screen? I've just picked up a T430 as a cheap replacement. It's the base model, so will likely just upgrade to an SSD to begin with and go from there

I do a lot of spreadsheets. The ram helps. I also use a dock and two external 24" monitors so I never look at the screen. Going to upgrade to a t450s soon.

Zeno Candragufa Muria t440p is the easiest to upgrade . There are many tutorial videos on KZfaq. Mine has 16gb hyper x ram. 4900mq i7. 500gb SSD and a 2tb hdd in the old dvd drive caddy (converted) I also swapped out old lcd to ips

Yup. It should work. I think the stick under the keyboard is the main memory slot though

It really does not like Windows 10 Pro as i can only see it at 6Gig of Ram on a i-core -5 as it's been added but cannot do what was so easy in win-7,a simple windows diagnostics and instead of 64 it's stuck-on 32mb to handle the core - 5. It's a great Laptop namely Lenovo 430s and since buying it second - hand last december the Updates have caused kaos,to the point i want win-7 back as it's all aimed at the x-box if your 5 / 6 years-old as i need it for MUSIC PROGRAMS and now on a TB-SSD & 32 RAM as Lenovo allow more Ram under your keyboard to useing the disk player to an extra drive ''why the Army used these carbon bodied Laptop'' ...Yikkkkeeesss 5 month on windows - 10 is a nightmare and now installing Linux Mint too basically so it works with less crap on it ....kool video
