Junction out of a black and white film, as Charlotte Street decide to continue in monochrome (a deliberate artistic decision, or just a cock-up?) Thanks to TomSonic for this.

So hard to tell if the awkwardness, silence, god knows what's going on with the clock and the black and white here is intentional or someone cocked up... you can hear someone speaking off camera before Syd starts talking, and you can hear the very end of the channel 4 music at the end, suggesting something was mistimed or there was some sort of fault. I know the BBC and ITV companies used to turn the colour signal off for black & white programmes until the late 80s. I don't know if Channel 4 did, but if they did, it could explain why it's in b&w- somehow it wasn't turned back on after.

Don't forget to join us later here on Channel 4. " 'til then, Sleep Tight!"

I think this was recorded in Wales so presumably you could pick up Channel 4 from a distance it would seem,, hence a lack of colour.

It's a reasonable thought but no, this was definitely recorded in a C4 full coverage area: I was given it for upload by someone who recovers teletext from old VHS tapes, and if the reception was so poor that the colour information wouldn't have been available, he wouldn't have been able to recover anything.

@@rhysjj Have you tried colourising it using something called HitPaw Video Enhancer? I only managed to colour the first few seconds of it and 'The End' was in yellow!!!!

You're live, Syd! Syd Burke that was. Looks uncomfortable in vision but had a lovely voice.

Thanks for the name. I do wonder what was going on behind the scenes - barely three months after launch, I can imagine things didn't always go that smoothly at Horseferry Road.

@@rhysjj they would still be in Charlotte Street at this point. The studio was in a basement beneath the offices.

How long did Syd stay with Channel 4?

Only a couple of months unfortunately but sadly he is no longer alive.
