Battletech has been around me for maybe as long as I know warhammer since in the hobbyshops that I frequently visited it was also played and I was always interested in it but slightly put off by the (seemingly) complex ruleset. So, Battletech How to play and maybe even painting guides? YES, PLEASE!

I saw some of those comments and the nasty things that were said on other sites as well. It’s a main reason why I stopped doing content for social media. I cannot even begin to imagine what that stress must have felt like for you. Hopefully, it has started to go away! Take care of yourself!

@@MidwinterMinis I thought you handled that video really well personally. You clearly brought up points that newer players might not recognize about if they want to get their group into BA or other historical games and didn't seem to be passing judgment either way to me. The fact that people can look at a video like that and have the reaction they did is horrible to me. I completely agree that the behavior shown in the comments of that video has no business anywhere but I commend you for waiting until you were in a headspace to not lash back to address it. Love all your videos and can't wait until the deathmatch series starts up again whatever form it takes.

as a generic wargamer i'm going to quickly jump on the historical wargame shenanigans, i play as the germans in a wargame called "flames of war" now i quite honestly don't feel comfortable playing as them usually, but im in love with the unique german combat doctrine and the looks of the models, but i don't think it's justified to harrass a innocent... guy, its honestly disguisting what people are capable of and i feel really sorry for anyone who has fallen victim to all these... mindless individuals who think their actions don't have an effect on the people they harrass in real life! i really hope everything is going okay now since you're my idol! my whole warhammer carreer is thanks to you and i know this might sound weird, or look weird but im really thankful for opening my eyes to warhammer and everything else!

As someone who has developed "thick skin" against others opinions, as long as you don't let them influence you they hold no power, but if you enjoying playing as a frankly distilled version of the Wehrmacht that's fine as long as you recognise their actions for what they are. Nothing comes without cost, especially military innovations.

Hey Guy, jumping in on that last part, the "historicals controversy": as a historical wargamer, I think you addressed valid points. Goonhammer last year put out a far more scathing article on the topic (which was similarly received, I guess), and the reality remains: some people in the Historical community don't want to hear anything even slightly critical of some aspects of their hobby. I can give tons of examples about this, so many I feel confident in saying it's one of the community's blindspots (namely, reading a mild critique/analysis and automatically jumping to the conclusion you're calling them nazis). It worries me that you think you "messed up" just because you got 50% split on likes/dislikes. That's not a fair metric. Whenever you put your opinions on a controversial topic, you'll get dislikes. If it ruffles some feathers, you'll get many dislikes! That's the reality of life whenever saying something that isn't bland and uncontroversial. Finally, I'm appalled that you got death threats. I knew about the speculations on your personal life, and that's none of anybody's business. But death threats? People are deranged.

Your second paragraph hits the nail on the head. Sadly, the life of a KZfaqr means making videos that are not just viewed but that have an excellent ‘like’ ratio. And as a consequence, KZfaqrs are incentivised to avoid topics that generate actual conversation or put out videos containing nothing but the most milquetoast opinions. I’m not advocating for Guy to ignore this fact and stir debate with potentially polarising takes because I appreciate that this is his living. But it irks me that the bargain that one must make is ‘keep your head down or be buried by morons’. Such an ecosystem will naturally tend toward blandness. Regardless, MWM is such a good channel that I have faith that Guy has the talent to succeed in navigating this puzzle with engaging content nevertheless. Anyway, good job telling the ball bags to eat it at the end btw Guy. Much love xxx

I'm sorry you went through that, Guy. I felt that the video, for me at least, was exactly what you described as the intent. There's a certain fun of playing the bad guys when it's all fun-and-games, but when it is real history that impacted the lives and communities of people who are still alive today, it hits different. I think you're a champ, and we love you.

Your battle reports are some of the very best on KZfaq; I'm always excited when one comes out. The deathmatch was fun to watch and coincided with my introduction to the tabletop game. I'd be so stoked to see them again, even if far less frequent. I always cleaned house and got beverage/cleared my next half-hour whenever I saw one of those videos. The voice over, editing, narrating, and overall aesthetic quality is top notch.

This was really good, certainly up for more update/chit chat videos. Props to you for covering the Bolt Action stuff. I was not massively impressed with the view the video seemed to portray given my love for historical wargaming. But it disgusts me that anyone would go so far with their anger as you described, what horrible people. Well done for keeping as calm as you did. Keep up the good work guys!

The arena might need a bit of variation to. Only to prevent the classic "I don't move and shoot", "Same". Repeat next turn and next game. Not big changes, just some covers or even specials rules. We dont care of fairness.

Can’t fathom why anyone was offended by the bolt action video, I’ve watched it a couple of times (I like tanks) and it never crossed my mind that some people might be offended. Bizarre times we live in eh? If they were aggravated enough to threaten you then they are the parts of historical communities that you didn’t even talk about or basement dwelling keyboard warriors. My parents used to do a lot of historical reenactment shows and let’s just say I didn’t meet anyone who enjoyed dressing up as a Nazi for the weekend as super “normal”, not all bad of course but there’s a oddness to it for sure. I remember a lot of the stuff people were saying after the Bolt Action video being well over the line, so it doesn't surprise me that the stuff people were messaging you and Hattie would be even worse (being cowards, of course they'd do it in private) but even so that's disgusting to hear. Something to remember when certain Historicals players insist it's only games like 40K that have a problem with toxic players.

The way catalyst treats their customers is why i went ham on their most recent battletech kickstarter. It's night and day from how GW treats customers (victims). The rules for battletech are, while dense, extremely well written and intuitive so its eay easier to learn than the convoluted slop GW puts out.

The way that people reacted to your bolt action video completely drove me away from bolt action, I was originally intending to try and play that game as the Germans but the absolutely vile way that everyone attacked you for such a good video has made me decide that it’s simply not worth my time. It’s always a good time watching your videos, and I quite like these little……. Update videos? (Yeah let’s go with that lol), you’re the guy (HAHA) that got me into warhammer, without you I don’t think I would really be who I am today so thank you so much for doing what you do and I’m excited to see your next video!

When I first got into this hobby, l turned to KZfaq for inspiration. I quickly found the video of you and your two neices painting their first Warhammer minis, and I've been a fan of yours ever since! And as for that Bolt Action video, I thought you handled it very tactfully and respectfully, and I'm sorry you got so much hate for it. None of us deserve to be treated like that. As a historical wargamer - there was nothing harmful, hateful or offensive about your video on historical wargaming. I thought it was a good take, and a thoughtful take on the subject. People want to be offended. People want to be upset and point fingers and cast blame over anything that doesn't 100% agree with something they like - and they are the sort to brigade someone or something online to make themselves feel superior. Also as a historical wargamer, I often find the people most offended are those willing to be the most offensive. I'm sorry anyone in the hobby made you feel threatened. You did good. To hell with the haters.

I personally didn’t see an issue with the bolt action video. They were legitimate points that were worthy of discussion, and certain people being triggered by that just reinforces that.

Glad to hear your housing situation is sorted, for now. I'm not really into 40K any more but I did enjoy your Start Collecting series and will probably watch the new format. It'd be nice to see some AoS content from you, especially with the new Spearhead gameplay, it seems the smaller, faster matches would be right up your street, I'm jus not sure how you feel about Fantasy. I'm not weighing in on the content of the Historical Wargaming video but Kudos for standing up for yourself, you're absolutely right, that kind of behaviouor is reprehensible.

@@MidwinterMinis One of the boxes I have is the Alpha strike box, comes with both fighting sides (clan and inner sphere) and have simplified rules, so if anybody is interested, they don't need to buy anything. In the second box I have there are hard cardboard cutouts of the same mechs are in the box, so if anyone wants to try it, no need to buy anything. But somehow noone is interested to try it. :(

I've loved Battletech for 30 years. I use the Alpha Strike rules as an intro. Easy to understand, quick to play and really the only way to do massive games without spending days on them. Alpha Strike is different than the 'classic' Battletech rules. Don't let someone gate that Alpha Strike is not Battletech. Alpha Strike rules, what terrain you already have, a couple mechs and get the dice rolling. Then you'll have played Battletech.

I like you Guy, youve been fun to watch over the years, Hatty is infectiously fun to watch and ive never had any complaints with your videos (your post production has grown so well over all this time)...as a normal person (almost sane) i have no concerns with you, your promotional advertising (i thought the ship ad was inline with historical gaming) and i have no issue with working with other companies such as your spray paints...i say kudos to you good sir, in my mind teaming up with a well respected company is an achievement to show that other companies see and view your channel as something important to the community. As just a simple plebian I was never aware of the insanity you faced from the Bolt Action video...i remember watching a bit of it going "meh historical isnt for me" and that was it. But apparently there are scumbags out there who have to make themselves feel important by bullying or hurting others. But just as you saw with the family who won your butthole tank, theres normal fans out there who are very appreciative of your work. Thank you for your time and effort and your teams hard work and effort in supplying us with the entertainment that you all do so well. I wish nothing but good things for you in the future as I excitedly continue to watch you grow. As a viewer from the states if your primer ever comes here, i would love to grab a can of yours and Peachy's just to own them and put on my shelf as a fan.

The landraider story really made me smile. I'm happy it was able to create what looked like some really fond memories for you and everyone involved. The beauty of nerdy hobbies in plain sight. Additionally, something about the Deathmatch situation, it's really fair to say you got rugpulled by GW (as they all too often do with the content creators who's hard work and content they really benefit from. I don't understand their reasoning around this) and I'm pretty sure your entire audience more than understand it, and primarilly just want you to find a format that works financially for the channel. You running a profitable sustainable business is how we get more Midwinter, so at the end of the day, we'll always side with you.

Well Guy, I personally appreciate you bringing up the topic and discussing it. To me, getting upset over historical based wargames is incredibly ignorant. It seems to me that these people want to “erase” history or whatever. But I think as a society we need to acknowledge history, it’s good AND bad. Humanity is not perfect and it never will be. There are vile aspects of life and humanity and to ignore them destines them to be repeated. I think talking about them and understanding them is very important overall. So I appreciate you discussing it. Keep up the great work, you’re one of my favorite hobby KZfaqrs out there and your “learn to paint Warhammer” got me into Warhammer. So thank you.

I knew there would be some pretty crazy comments on the historical wargaming video... I did NOT think they would extend so far as death threats and doxing attempts. The codex astartes does not permit these actions. Also as a side note, I don't think painting german tanks and using them in a game is wrong. Its a game. Get over it? Love your vids and vibe! I think the 500pt battle report idea is a solid one! Also, side note: as a PoC who has been in the hobby space since I was 4 years old (32 now), I can honestly say you said nothing wrong in the historical wargames video. There are a lot of players who _do_ deserve side-eye for their "enthusiasm," whilst there are also some really good reasons to play those games. The thing is, the same is true for 40K (though to a lesser extent, of course), with even particular armies garnering those vibes. There's a reason I've never met a Maltese Black Templar player, for example :P I'm glad to see you take such a strong stance against the vitriol. Keep up the good work, Guy.
