If an album doesn't fit into 2 sides but is not long enough to spread over 4 sides, I totally support the decision to make it a 3 sided release with a side 4 etching, imo.

I think with CD's and digital music we have lost the idea that sometimes limitations force better results. Track sequencing for LP's seems like a lost art today There are lot of albums where just working with the limitations of LP would make infinitely better album than just cutting it to double LP with exactly same songs and order as CD. I don't care if there's couple of songs missing if the overall result is better album.

💯 agree, perfect example is John Scofield A Go Go, should have been 3 sides, sounds like CRAP forced on only 2. I’m used to the etchings as a Dead Head. I don’t mind the etchings, just maximize the sound.

Fully agree. I hate getting four sides that only have three tracks each. Put it on three sides and don't waste my time.

I have one record with an etching. It is Peter Gabriel's Passion, which is his soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ. The interesting thing is the records are 45 RPM 12 inches and supposedly this makes the sound quality better.

Hey Frank, I get you about sentimental value records. Most of my Heavy Metal collection was given to me by my uncle that I hung out with a lot when I was a kid. He is the reason I listen to Heavy Metal. The collections itself was a couple hundred records. To me, those records are priceless.

I got back into seriously collecting vinyl about ten years ago when I had a long illness. That kind of thing (providing me with way too much time to ruminate and reminisce) helps you sort out your memories and priorities. I'd had so many great experiences living with records that I knew I really wanted to keep them in my life, even if nobody else seemed to have much interest in them. I didn't build my library for them; I did it for me. So I had no idea about the explosion of interest -- and universal hike in prices -- that happened during the pandemic until... this year. I still buy too much (mostly new, under $40 audiophile jazz reissues or quiet Japanese pressings of titles long out of print), and the quality of vinyl pressings (even the top-grade stuff) still leaves a lot to be desired, but I'd be happy with my long-accumulated existing collection even if I never bought another disc.

If my memory serves me well (shades of Bob Dylan!), the retail list price of a vinyl album in 1969 was around $4.99. That translates in today's currency to over $41.00. So it would seem that today's record prices are, more or less, keeping in step with what one had to shell out over 50 years ago... of course, most people back then did not pay the retail list price, but would always seek out special sales in places like Gimbels or Sears department stores. It may be not so much what records cost these days that is the problem but that spending money is not what it used to be. Things appear to cost more because most souls are not making as much money, relative-wise, to what they used to earn eons back.

Love those old days where you would take your records to parties and put your initials on them, it was an item to be used rather than a collector's object you have to keep in pristine condition. Can't imagine there are many collectors today writing on the front cover with a black marker! About those etchings, they are annoying but I have an album where the band put a remix of one of the tracks as a bonus on side 4 and guess what, I never play it. So it doesn't really matter in the end. Live tracks would be cool though. And unlike CDs, where the bonus tracks ruin the flow of an album sometimes, on a separate side of vinyl I don't have to listen to them if I don't want to.

I honestly think etchings on an unused record side are super cool. Also, artists usually sequence an album with a specific end-song for a reason, and adding bonus tracks (that are usually throwaway material anyway) to artificially create extra "value" kind of cheapens the intention of the album sequencing and usually makes the album end with a thud. (And I personally almost never listen to the bonus stuff more than once anyway, for that exact reason.)

Yeah, it's a great album and I seem to recall the 'Superman II' soundtrack having the Superman logo etched into the record with both sides playing properly as usual.

When vinyl was on its way out, C.D.’s coming in. You could buy next to new vinyl for a” song.” That’s what I did ! Garage sales, full collections. Sometimes 20-30 albums. But only NEXT TO NEW ! Late 80’s.

I totally love just shopping for used stuff. Normally cheaper… and for some reason I like that hunt more than buying new stuff. With the exception of all these Grateful Dead box sets. Man they sound so great and are not that wildly priced imo.

The only album I have with an etching is Boards of Canada's Geogaddi which makes sense because the final track (which is "on" the etched side) is silence.

Hey Frank, just wanted to share my favorite concert i went to was also my first concert ever. it was in 1992, i was 14 and my dad took me to see "Crash Test Dummies" I know not your typical best concert ever band, but for me it was a real bonding moment with my dad as we sat against the back wall of the outdoor arena. There's a tipping point where the price of new records will outgrow fan's ability to buy them. I'm already there and will nowadays opt for the CD at less than half the price of vinyl. I love records (I have 4000) but I buy the music and not the format...especially if I feel I'm being taken advantage of and gouged.

I agree with you. But there is a downside with this approach. For the same album issued nowadays the CD version has a worse mastering than the vinyl (lowder, more compressed and flater). So if one chooses the CD for the price there is a big chance he is also choosing a worse sounding version of the album. To me this looks very much like scumming... 😐

Makes me happy that I have specific interests in record collecting. Only really want Black Metal, Doom Metal and some Death Metal. And only the ones I actually like. I do not want a collection of albums I don't even listen to. But CD's to my mind are kinda worthless. They're pretty much just disc shaped USB sticks, the exact same files you can just download from KZfaq if you want are just digitally stored on the CD, just like a USB stick. Meanwhile vinyl is completely analogue, the plastic literally IS the music. It's not just a digital storage device like CD's are. Now yes, CD's still have the additional art work, booklets and you support the artist by buying them... but.. eh.. They're just lame to me. I feel like I'm wasting my money when I buy CD's because I would never choose to use them over MP3/streaming and them just being storage devices for said MP3/streaming files makes them feel redundant to me. Meanwhile vinyl is far more valuable to my mind.

I remember when "Second Winter" by Johnny Winter came out. It had two discs but only music on three sides. The disclaimer said "We couldn't honestly give you more, but we didn't want to give you less." The fourth side was blank. It wouldn't have been bad if they had done an etching instead of nothing at all.

I've used the blank side to set the anti-skating control on my turntable. I've seen one blank 4th side where they just put a run-out groove across the entire side in case someone accidentally played it when they were stacking albums on a spindle.

I love etchings on a vinyl. Like, if the entire album has already been stamped on the grooves and it takes up 3 sides, then yeah, do something dope on the 4th side. Etchings or bonus tracks makes me happy.

A KISS album was for me one of my most prized possession. It was my very first album I owned, although it was my father who payed for it, and the album was Destroyer. And although there are long periods where I didn't listen to that album, I've always loved it, and can still listen to it and enjoy it today (although not on vinyl anymore since I sold my collection many years ago).

Haven't bought a new vinyl record in close to a year now , the only records I purchase are at my local thrift store which is a 4 minute walk away . I get lucky from time to time and I like the price at $3.99 . To be honest CD's sound better anyways , if CD's were a few inches larger and came in a nice cardboard sleeve they'd own Vinyl.

I have seen rare old pre WW2 antique single sided 78 speed discs with the song on one side and on the other side had a fancy etch pressing of the record label's logo (RCA Victor dog) and fancy art graphics.

My favorite concert was my wifes first concert. I camped out for almost 3 days and was 1st in line. We sat 7th row center at RFK stadium to see Pink Floyd. The concert was amazing. David Gilmore was serenading me the whole show 😂 but seriously it was incredible

I was at RFK in '76 and saw Nugent, Nazareth, Skynyrd, and Aerosmith in that order. We lived in Northern Virginia at the time. It's was a high spot in my younger years to see Skynyrd before the plane crash.

I have 2 with etchings.1st is my original 1987 SST Records pressing of Lee Ronaldo (Sonic Youth) debut solo album "From Here To Infinity". 5th track on Side B is named "Sav X" only it's not a song but an etching of a serpent/dragon eating it's own head by artist Savage Pencil, which also appears on the album cover. The other is a Portishead 12" single "Machine Gun" the whole B-Side is an etching.

One of my favorite "finds" is a copy of Paranoid from 1973 on the WWA label. What makes those special is that, those pressings were actually made with the original Vertigo stampers. The Vertigo matrix numbers are visible in the run out groove. Those are a fraction of the cost of the original pressings with the management credits. Those Vertigo pressings/mixes are really the definitive ones. It's nice to get to hear it for less than 1/10th the price.

Love a Q&A Frank and thanks for answering a couple of my questions. Its funny but I agree, the best gigs now are the small bars and clubs, rather than the big areas. Loud, tight music in a hot small venue.. you cant beat it. My best memory of a gig was always my first... way back in 1980 at the age of 12!!

My first music Idol was Gary Numan and my mum got my brother and I, tickets to see him in Bristol on his Teletour in September 1980. Blew me away with the stage show, sound and lighting. The support artist Nash the Slash was pretty amazing as well. Since then been to loads of gigs, but you dont forgt your first !!

Do I like the etchings more than if there were additional music on that side? No. But, I do like the etchings, most are designed well and are cool to look at. I don't mind them per se. Think of this. Instead of just putting one record with two sides, maybe that etching will justify at least a side 3. On some pressings, I would rather have 3 sides than just 2 sides even if that means having a side 4 etching.

Hello Frank ! I also wish they would spread it out over 4 sides or fill it up with b-sides , live tracks or remixes. An excellent example is the 2019 30 year anniversary issue of The Cult’s ”Sonic temple”. This sollution could also apply to Cd to vinyl from the mid 90’s to late 00’s.

Loved this video !!! So many great topics! Vinyl priced at $18 or lower is in line with inflation- I was getting new vinyl in 1990 for $9 or lower. CDs then were $15+ ($35 today ) So CDs are an amazing deal these days at $12+ for new. I buy less vinyl the last year vs CDs. Having to hunt for good pressings plus the increased prices makes it hard to justify. I am tempted to drop the $$$ for Beatles Red & Blue however hehe. Your comment about ‘the gear’ that’s what keeps me bouncing between Vinyl & CDs. My gear is avg at best: Denon 3500 AVR AT-LP120 - stock cartridge & stylus Polk Monitor 70s series II FLAC played through the Denon via USB AppleTV for streaming

Being honest .. As long as scenesters keep the high price train rolling, I'm going to continue buying cheap CDs. And I'm buying more CDs because I'm done with bad pressings, bad shipping, and bad grading from ego driven sellers, and local shops.

Exactly. Nothing like ordering a $30-40 record and then you open it and it's warped. I've gotten caught up in the vinyl craze in the last 5+ years. I'm back to strictly buying CD's.

My only pet peeve is the Record stores that over price their records. I have learned to shop around. I paid $50 for a Who album I couldn't find anywhere. A month later I found another one for $9. Exact same condition.

Well, if you have a conundrum with filling the 4th side, why not master it to 45 rpm? No problem filling anything then, and the range is completely expanded.

I recently picked up a 1923 78 rpm shellac from 1923 with side 2 etched with zig zags and the word "Victor". It looks cool because the etch is much deeper than what we get on the relatively thin 33 rpm discs and I'm not playing it anyway.

I have albums in my collection that have 3 songs on a side, as a way to stretch one album onto two discs so they can charge more (like The Rolling Stones’ LP “Blue and Lonesome”). It’s irritating to have to get up and change the record every 3 songs. But I still would rather have that than a blank 4th side with an etching on it. At least there’s music there!!!

I never experienced an etched vinyl record until I bought Tool's Lateralus which to my surprise had an etched fourth side. It wasn't necessary except for maybe the art's sake. My only fear is that someone may try to play that side and ruin their stylus. Then again I don't let anyone play or use my stereo. Mine, mine, mine! 🙂

Fortunately, you can still find a lot of good old used records on the market, which in most cases sounds better than new remastered records. In the last two years, I mostly bought old and analog mastered records.👍

I am told and have some evidence to back it up, that 1 sided discs were the norm when they first appeared in the early 20 century. Cylinders only had one track after all. My evidence is a 1912 78rpm with a track on one side and an embossed HMV (RCA in the US) Nipper the dog logo on the other. It is remarkable how many people say their most important record is actually quite easily and cheaply found. The mark of a true collector IMHO.

I had an original pressies of van Halen's balance but I left a small pile of lps at my moms when i moved out and they vanished. She says she has no idea about them but im guessing someone got a real good deal at her garage sale before she moved. Of course back then i could never imagine what itd be worth now.

8:12 Yeah, Reverend Horton Heat is amazing. I've seen them four times, I think. I'm always at the front row, and get to chat with Jim and Jimbo after the shows. I saw them on their first national tour when they opened for The Cramps back in 1992. I was hooked from that day forward.

I just found and bought a grail album. John Fogerty's Centerfield album, the original mix with Zanz Kant Danz. Only cost $25.00 US. Previous to this, I was gifted another grail, a 1969 Decca pressing of Tommy. And yes, I have had Tennessee Moonshine. Also, I've had Everclear as well. High octaine liquids. Real heavy fuel if you can find it. I wonder if moonshine can start a car?

Regarding the 3-sided album. The first one I got was back in the 1970's, Johnny Winter Second Winter. The 4th side was blank, I mean nothing, so at least there is an etching these days. Better than nothing, I guess. Thanks for the video, Frank.

Maybe they are etching the 4th side due to the shortage of lacquers? Since the big Apollo fire it's harder and harder to get the lacquers in turn making it more and more expensive. Looks like they should focus on more DMM

The UHQR albums analogue productions comes out with are absolutely phenomenally amazing! I wish I would have bought Jimi Hendrix axes bold is love and Jethro Tull's aqualung. The Hendricks album has been sold for close to $800 the last time I looked. I am not a collector so what I buy I listen to and keep. The tone poet series are anywhere between 40 and close to $50 and they sound incredible!

You get what you pay for, for the most part. I have no intrest in lps that have been digitally remastered from analog tape. Just find an OG. The Tone Poets are a great value at $40-$50. OG Blue Notes are expensive.

You should get and listen to an 8-track of Led Zeppelin's first album. You'll love the way long songs fade out in the middle so the player can shift from tracks 1-5 to tracks 2-6 and then the song fades back in again. When my dad had a CD player put in the family car, someone who "knew" suggested to him that the first 8-tracks he buy were LZ1, Best of Buffalo Springfield, and The Atlantic Super Hits Volume 2. The 8-track player got stolen out of the car at the first hockey barn concert I ever went to. The Grease Band, The Faces (with pre-stardom Rod Stewart and Ron Wood), and Savoy Brown headlining. Savoy Brown got blown off the stage by Faces.

In Montreal, it's very easy to find 30$ records. It's also very easy to find interesting used records. I'd even say that 30$ is the average price of a record if you don't care about special editions and colored disc. I rarely buy mainstream new releases though, so I don't really know how those are priced. Maybe those are the very expensive ones.

I have a few "etched" records; Queen, Bob Marley, Bowie, maybe a couple of others. But I remember Rush having a 3D laser etching on one of their albums back in the early 80's. The etching was made on the playable surface of the record, and the record still played perfectly. If record companies/bands are insistent on having etchings, why can't they do something like this instead. They certainly are a waste of expensive vinyl.

I have a few albums with etchings, including some Grateful Dead and Tool but I've never done anything other than look at them once and put them away. Have never given any of them a second look. So I could do without them. And if they add to the cost, I'd just as soon they not bother and take a few dollars off the price for the package.

There is one thing about side 4 etchingsthat make me actively avoid them, there is a very large percentage of records with one sided etchings that bowls because the density difference of the two siddes. It is so common among the ones I have I just avoid them completely.

RE : Side D etchings... ! yeah first time I saw this was the Thurston Moore album on Geffen Psychic Hearts - not a bad album kinda memorable - the art was sad , actually maybe did reflect the music wasn't just a symbol so fit in that package IMO - the first LP was green transluscent vinyl the 2nd album was the etching with Black vinyl - side C was a full side noise jam - . I would never buy an album for a chachkie though - prefer black vinyl as well or quietex.

My pet peeve is when the record industry announces it will hike the prices of their records because the price of vinyl (the material to make the records itself) is going up in price and then they stick 10 songs on two records when they could just fit them on one record like they used to do. By doing so they are just wasting more expensive vinyl and contributing to the price hike. The industry needs to get their s**t together.

The first and only album I ever had that had a side 4 etching was Alice In Chains "SAP/Jar Of Flies" that was release in 1994. I thought it was cool but it was just a couple of short EP's on 2 pieces of vinyl, no sacrifice to sound quality

I've been buying less vinyl as the prices have gone up and up the last couple years. I'd guess that many people will become more selective about their vinyl purchases and units sold will start dropping, even if revenues still climb mostly because of the jacked up prices. As for 4th side etchings, I'd much rather get (for example) 3 sides of 4 songs each and an etching on the 4th side, than 4 sides of 3 songs each.

I have a few albums with a side four that’s blank and a few albums with a side four that has an etching I like the etching because it shows that the artist put extra work or extra thought into it. I have a metallica 33 LP single that has the Lord of Summer on one side and the big metallica on the other side. I’m glad they didn’t put it on a 45 because it looks super cool.

Eventually, greed will hurt the hobby. There's already bruises, as prices have turned some people off. I'm still paying some stupid prices for new vinyl, but I always look for used records too, and that helps balance it out a bit. I buy, I sell, I trade, whatever it takes to get my fix, lol! How big is your collection? My collection is probably over 5000, but I must have at least 10 000 in the house. Yep, addicted.

I don’t listen to metal so I haven’t seen those etchings before (I’m assuming it’s primarily a metal thing). I think they look cool for the 10 seconds you might look at it while putting it away. If they put demos or extra music on those side 4s they’d only have an excuse to jack up the price more. 🙃

The only album I have that's laser-etched is Styx' "Paradise Theater". The etching is very subtle.

I still remember buying "Paradise Theater" in April 1981 and seeing the laser etching and being completely floored. I wish I was still that easily impressed. I still have that same copy today in 2024.

While I don't care about a side 4 etching, I would rather have that than a shortened version of an album. It kills me that I can't get Sade's "Promise" album with "Punch Drunk" on it (the LP is also missing "You're Not The Man"). While it seems that we are paying for a blank record side, it's possible that it could be more expensive to actually include another 4 or 5 songs- cutting masters, pressing etc. Maybe there's a future with 18" records that will hold more songs! Ooohhh... new turntables, sleeves, storage🙄💸💸

As usual, I share a lot of your opinions and commonalities. I received that Scorpion Child album on CD as a gift. I got into in high school with the Spreading the Disease album and I remember getting into that Anthrax album when it came out (especially after really liking 2011's Worship Music when that came out and got me back into them). Pyromania and Metal Health were the first albums I bought with my own money. Of all the vinyl issues to complain about, etchings are not high on my list to complain about; I don't feel strongly either way (as long as they are priced accordingly). I don't think I have tons of them. The Tea Party's Splendor Solis on Tea colored/Tan Translucent vinyl with tree and ravens etched is pretty cool. So is Neil Young's Harvest Moon. I'm pretty sure side D of my Nada Surf - Let Go record is just black (no etching). Could they throw something else on there I might listen to once. Suurre. A great user poll might actually be: What is the side D bonus material or extra disk that people think are super worth the price of admission. I'm with you about small club shows; they are my favorite (though I did just see Wolfgang VH and Big Wreck; 2 different mid-size shows this past week. Cheers!

My 2 cents on the side 4 etchings. They do nothing for me personally. I think if you are going to press an album on vinyl, you either need to figure out how to cut it into 4 sides or just 2. I agree flipping over every 3 songs may get annoying, but older albums from the 60s and 70s were pretty short. 10 songs at about 2.5-3.5 minutes per song, thats only a 30 minute album or 15 minutes per side. We just (generally) have longer songs nowadays. But yeah, lets kill the side 4 etch. I can't display the side 4 anywhere because how else can I play side 3?

As far as audiophile pressings - I have experimented with a number of them (UHQR, a lot of MOFI, Analogue productions) and have come away with two things: 1. Some of the ones I have do in fact sound amazing (UHQR Steely Fan for instance) 2. The price can get nuts. Analogue Productions for a killer album I love I will pop for ($60 USD), however a $125 MoFi Van Halen remaster is off the table. Having said that I have preordered the MoFi SACD. The dsd file I assume is the same information being pressed to both formats - $30 USD < $125 record.

I agree. The lacquer and vinyl are wasted if there is no music on Side 4. Fill up the side with unreleased tracks so buyers get their value for money. I don't buy LPs if I see side 4 has an etching.

I'm not "clamoring to get this stuff". I thrift and have added great stuff (some valuable as well) to my collection without breaking the bank. I've been at it off and on for decades, so was never in a rush. Laser etchings are cool when you can still play that side, like the Superman 2 soundtrack, for example.

I chased an LP once as it was out of print. It ended up costing me about $109 with tax and shipping (EBay). It had a very small "cup" warp. It was a sealed MoFi. It has been rereleased for $39. Never again. $40 is my tops for a single - $60 for a double. I have 3,800 LPs. I'm good. And I agree, an original pressing can sound amazing. I have a Japanese pressing from 1980 of Fleetwood Mac's "Bare Trees". I did not spend all that much for it, perhaps $12. I have an original U.S. Reprise that I scored at a garage sale for $1. It sounds as good or better.

Pet peeve: Pricing, especially for used albums. I don't really care about etchings. I have a Billy Idol album that has an etching and it's never bothered me. Most cherished record(s): one is ELO - Out of the Blue. I've been a huge KISS fan since I was a kid and my dad would always give me a hard time about them and that type of music. I got Out of the Blue from the Columbia Record & Tape club, not knowing anything about it, and loved it. My dad loved it too, so it was a bonding record for us. We played it all the time when we were in the car or on our boat. Another cherished record is KISS - Rock and Roll Over. This was my first KISS album. I had just seen KISS Meets the Phantom on TV, and the opening song was Rock and Roll All Nite. The RARO cover was spinning on the screen while the song played, so I thought RARAN was on Rock and Roll Over. My mom and I were in Dart Drug and I saw the album and asked her to buy it for me. She did, and it's always been one of my favorite albums.
