Many farmers in the UK and in other parts of Europe are angry and are not afraid to take to the streets in protest. Two days ago there were columns of tractors and clashes with the police in Brussels.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Today there have been demonstrations outside the Senedd in Cardiff. It's the latest and largest protest so far from Welsh farmers worried about a planned subsidy scheme, requiring 10 per cent of land to be set aside for trees.

I was talking to a farmer friend of mine, she stated I was rich. I replied an accent doesn't make one rich and hadn't she been on to her husband for a new Range Rover? Anyway I said you don't pay any taxes, if you earn a lot you buy land or equipment. She agreed that this was so, and wilted somewhat.

Planting more trees isn't a bad thing, but I always find it hypocritical of governments that they want to destroy productive agricultural land. How about planting those trees in parks, alongside dual carriageways with their wasted verges, unused wasteland and forcing industrial estates to get rid of their lawns and plant trees. These goals can be achieved or nearly achieved in other ways and those options should be considered before destroying one of Wales' most important industries.

71% of land is owned by farmers, so this policy could reforest 7% of land. By contrast you'd have to reforest 24% of all other land to hit the same 7%. And that's not even counting for other private land (residential and commercial property) and the fact that we have a housing crisis
@not_ever
@not_ever 3 ай бұрын
Reforestation particularly of hillsides can help manage flooding which is beneficial to farmers because losing livestock/equipment to flooding is expensive. Animals can graze in woodland but we tend to fence it off and not let livestock near it. This is possibly why the unions are saying it will take the land out of commision. This is false though as can be grazed and provides livestock shelter from the sun in our increasingly hot summers. It is called Silvopasture and Welsh farmers can do it with the correct support. It's not new, it's already done in the UK and farmers would have been doing this 100s of years ago. Arable farmers should be able to substitute trees for hedgerows. Selling off of farmland because it's not viable to farm will lead to the destruction of farmland. The man saying farming is not viable now (before any of this is a thing) is right and being asked to do this on top of surviving is not possible. Farmers should receive more resources and help. As a country we need to value farmers more as well as the land.

@@not_ever I agree with a lot of what you have said but whilst in Europe we payed twice for our food, first in subsidies and then at the shops. Leaving Europe has resulted in Westminster not making up the shortfall to the Welsh Assembly. They simply don't have the money. Wales is entirely dependant on England. It doesn't pay it's own way. Farmers in the main voted to leave, disregarding the warnings about funding.
@not_ever

@@jeremyatkinson4976 I agree with this but we've left now. And yes a lot of these people probably did vote for Brexit like Turkeys voting for Christmas but we've still got to support them and we need to protect the environment. If you look at farmers in Europe, they are also suffering and have been since before Brexit. EU subsidies aren't enough to support EU farmers now and weren't enough before Brexit. This means farmers in Wales were probably struggling before Brexit and thought the Tory party would make all their dreams come true if we left.

Why are councils cutting down trees in towns and cities across the country? Why have hundreds of trees been cut down along the M56? Only a few years ago farmers were losing subsidies for land with trees on, many were cut down then. Leave the trees alone and let the farmers manage their land.

I have the uttermost respect for farmers. Being a farmer is not an easy job, it's a very labour intensive job that involves early mornings and long hours. Livestock farmers also face major problems with things like disease, bovine TB, dog attacks and militant vegan protesters. Without farmers, the world would face global famine and the human race would go extinct. Supermarkets are part of the problem too. Supermarkets fail to pay farmers a fair price for their produce, which means many farmers no longer sell to supermarkets. Governments need to start showing some respect for farmers, and making laws which mean supermarkets must pay farmers a fair price for the hard work they do making sure everyone has food on their tables. It's simple, no farmers, no food.

Farmers. Are looking after each other’s interests. Being usually isolated they need to act together. There are forces that are against them know nothing of what they do. Hence it is totally impractical. The public will support the farmers 100% .The more food security we have the better . That means more food not less all home grown. This is another consequence of net zero that if proceeded with must mean less is required elsewhere and money made available for the farmers to. Mechanise where needed.

They have my support, farmers can improve environmentaly and have been, as with any industry there'll be the odd bad egg that makes the headlines. Theres opportunity all over the uk for tree planting and habitat restoration but not at the cost of food production. Enough grade 1 land is covered for ever with housing, concrete and solar panels (to offset the poor sewage processing) . Its an easy eco minded government plan to (just make the farmers plant trees) whom already work 7 days a week and could probably do with an 8th at the same time baffled by the bone idleness of people who want a 4 day week... What a dream. Poorly thought through proposals is not what farmers need. Farmers also shouldnt need to diversify to make a living, if every farmer did whos nicking whos business then? If domestic food production keeps decreasing across the UK as population continues to increase then more food needs importing sounds obvious.. its not sitting on the border waiting, there will be deforestation elsewhere to meet demand, likely to be south america so global carbon emissions will be up much higher than the uks will be down. But the government will be able to boast about meeting net zero targets.

The government has no place in farm businesses - fortunately they don't dictate what crops farmers can grow neither where they sell those products. Neither should they should be supporting inefficient businesses to survive - its the farmers job to navigate a successful way forward. That forms the basis of any business. Farmers operate in a commodity market which isn't going to change and rewards low costs and scale - things Welsh farmers generally don't have. So farmers - where can government support farming but achieve some good - by protecting the natural environment which is crucial. To that end you have two choices - don't accept the money, don't make change and be a martyr to conventional thinking and the sacred cows of expecting subsidy for no return OR make the changes required, use them to your advantage and thrive. Even better push for bigger, bolder change and more funding, turn Wales into a food and environment paradise. Even if you don’t want to change you still have to live under the various bits of legislation eg Food Hygiene, Environmental protection, H&S, Employment Law so the small amount of paperwork you have to deal with won’t change. Farmers always bang on about being custodians of the countryside and food security. The rate of soil and organic matter loss and farm pollution incidents have risen significantly over the last 30yrs. If their custodians they aren’t doing a very good job. The silly argument about food security is a massive red herring. We have food security, the retailers have full shelves, customers have choice and nothing will disrupt that to much (maybe the odd baby corn blip but no one is going to starve). Farming has to stop moaning and complaining, understand it is in a new reality where the world is interconnected, they aren’t that crucial (half the farmers produce about 95% of the calories and protein) and the people have just concerns over climate, habitat, access, better quality and more ethically produced food. Farmers can either steal a march and engage with a really open mind with environmental and wildlife groups, put together some radical and big changes and force government to sit up and listen and fund the changes they propose. If not they deserve to disappear

The corporate greed of the supermarkets needs to be controlled, then farming subsidies can be reduced. Super markets buy potatoes @ £80 per ton then retail them @£800 per ton , and the customer has to pay for them at the time of purchase but the farmers are usually on 90 day payment.

With proper agroforestry land remains profitable and is managed traditionally eg wood pasture,as my paper would argue if I could afford to pay tuition fees.......and no I can not get a loan due to my age

Amazing news!!! 💪🏼 Xx All I'd say... I agree with planting more trees and better wildlife diversity BUT id rather go to a farmers market and pay more than goto a supermarket where farmers are treated badly.

Are these payments being put in place to replace the payments that used to be paid via a European union framework, the European Union that the Welsh voted to leave?

Yeah! We should import food from 3rd world countries so they can poison their lakes and rivers instead! Because realistically, that's what will happen if farming becomes unviable in this country. That, or we can all starve to death if you'd prefer.

do like the wildlife - but in fairness to farmers very few make a sensible wage many dont make any wage // same in france - retired brit restoring an abandoned farm - dealing with paperwork here for a small farm is a nightmare // gave up so looking at diffrent ideas / neighbour is doing mixed crop timber truffles but will take years and year // its the speed of change wanted thats is difficult to adjust to / -- add in ridiculous price land UK compared to europe // what did govt expect ...

Farmers are not public employees like teachers, NHS doctors or social workers. Farmers are business owners, they should not come under standardised rules created by government officers who know nothing about the practical elements of farming. They do what they do for three reasons: - To feed the nation - To earn a living, meagre though it often is for hill farmers in parts of Wales - To care for their land and livestock, the foundation of their farms and, if government policy doesn't put them off, to hand a thriving farm to their children. What is the point in all this environmental policy of the farms die and, as a result, the people starve. Who will be here to enjoy it? Shall we just import everything, fly it in and add a poop load of carbon to the environment that way, so we can pretend the UK is carbon neutral? What next? Do we need to stop breathing out carbon dioxide too? It is MAD policy!
