Estonia Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is one of Ukraine's biggest allies - and says Nato needs to do more against the threat of Russia.
[Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe]
Estonia is also one of Nato's biggest spenders. The country borders Russia and could be one of the first countries if Putin decided to invade.

The degree to which countries recognise the threat of Russia tends to correspond with how close they actually are to Russia. Appeasement is generally discussed by those with no experience.

That’s a fair point but when these small countries that are being bullied by Russia join NATO and they want all the western nations to join in their defence, then citizens of western nations have a right to express concern about hostile rhetoric towards Russia.

Not going to happen. Estonia has been invaded before and Estonians understand what threatens them. Travel from Tallinn eastwards and the country changes from native Estonians to Russians. The fact that the river crossing over the Narva to Russia has a castle at each end of the bridge tells you something about history. Most Americans are completely unaware of the world outside the USA. Politics in the US involve a party that wants permanent minority rule, even if achieved by questionable means, huge political polarization often based on ignorance or lies, meaningless fearmongering, unnecessary religious interference, pointless arguments on marginal topics, and politics by performance on social media as a replacement for reality. It's not conducive to Estonian-style politics.

Kallas is one of the most stupid leaders in Europe. She has called for breaking up Russia into a thousand pieces, exactly proving one of Vladimir Putin's main points: not content with breaking up the Soviet Union in 1991, USA/NATO wants to break up and destroy Russia. Kallas heads a micro-nation of 1.3 million people and wants to wage all-out war against Russia, a nation of 144 million with a strong military and extensive natural resources. You don't need to be particularly pro-Russian or pro-Putin to realise that she is one of the dumbest and most incompetent "leaders" in Europe. If you want to start WW3 with Russia, and destroy Europe once and for all (after the horrible experiences of WW1 and WW2), then by all means, support this stupid woman that Estonians are unlucky to have.0

Excuse me, I think POTUS who is shadowed 24/7 with a Pentagon Officer who holds the 'Football', literally the 'red button' which can start WWIII, knows more what he is doing then you do. Ukraine never could have survived as a nuclear power, Putin would have taken them out a long time ago with that as a Casus Belli, not to mention they didn't have the launch codes or ability to maintain or upgrade them. The fault is two fold, neither the West nor Ukraine (yes Ukraine!) prepared for this full invasion after 2014. Ukraine is a conventional arms building country, but their MOD wasn't buying any. All their tank production went overseas. And yes escalation is a serious issue that I think the leadership has a better handle on then anybody on the internet, so it makes no sense for you to on the one hand say 'just give them ', and on the other hand talk about WWIII. Final comment about giving them 'whatever it takes', you know they didn't use all the arms that were supplied for the spring counter offensive. Their army is still operating under Soviet doctrine, which is small squad based. That's why the Bradley is so effective. The US advised a major effort to push to Crimea but they didn't do it, instead fiddled around and then just sent out squads, which inevitably led to this attritional war.

Ukraine never had a nuclear arsenal. It was russian. Same like US nuclear weapons in Europe.
@dannydetonator
@dannydetonator 2 күн бұрын
@AndrePepink False equivalency. US has agreements and personell to maintain the few remaining nuclear weapons oficcially owned and controlled by Pentagon. Ukraine actually posessed nuclear systems on their own for around 4 years and had capabilities and personell to use them. They were left in Ukraine when Soviet army returned to Russia, and reason Ukrainians had competence to use them is because in largest part it was Ukrainian engineers who not only designed and maintained ICBM/naval nuclear systems, but actually produced them before. Idk what you try to say, but if Russia could have taken them in 1990-1992 without a blip, why would they sit down with US and UK top diplomats and drafted Budapest memorandum in exchange? The Belarus and Kazakhstan didn't have to do that despite also possesing USSR nukes at the time. I'll tell you the main reason Ukraine happily agreed: they were in unprecedented financial crisis with record inflation, which made maintenance of the aged ICBMs an untenable nightmare. That and promises of safeguarding the country's security by 3 parties worked.. untill they didn't. If you wanted to make a point about Budapest Memorandum being weak in international law, you could have come up with something less rashist to prove that point. And mine is: Ukraine were tricked and betrayed by more than just Russia.

To their credit the Estonians do give more to the Ukrainian cause than any other NATO member by GDP per capita. However, the United States spends more on defense than any other country on the planet, 12 1/2% of GDP. That’s more spent on defense than the next five countries combined. It should not be a condition that politicians and their families serve first. It takes a person to be strong mentally and in character, and have courage of their convictions. It is not for everyone. I served and it made me a much better person, particularly through the amount of humanitarian work we were tasked with. It makes you less selfish and to see the world through different eyes. It teaches you to respect others and their property/possessions, sadly lacking in today’s society. I would submit NATO is the aggressive and unpredictable party here. Refer to William Burns leaked 2008 memo, the 2014 leaked Victoria Nuland phone call on selecting the government in Ukraine and wrt predictability, the numerous promises we've seen that certain weapons will not be supplied only to be overridden later. It's fine to have an opinion but it should ideally be based on facts.

@pasheg4345 3 күн бұрын
@@ewartmoutonThese stories aren't mutually exclusive. Yes, Russia's stuck in Ukraine at this point, and not exactly gaining ground. But that is not going to stay that way for long. First, Russia isn't even mobilized at this point. A few hundred thousand felons and bums recruited from under the bridge are strong enough to evenly match Ukrainian armed forces supplied by the whole Western world. Russia also outproduces all NATO countries combined in tanks, artillery shells and such. Now imagine what's gonna happen when Putun declares martial law and most adults are sent either to the frontlines, or to the factories to build more weapons. He has some 25+ millions of potential male recruits of fighting age, and about the same number would manufacture anything they'd need. Also, of course, China handsomely supplies Russian military, mostly using North Korea as a middleman. For comparison, all Baltic countries combined have some 3-4 millions of citizens overall. Only few of them have any military training at all. They've no defence industry either. It's going to end up in slaughter.

Why just men? If a nation might be expected to fight for its survival, surely women should be conscripted as well. Sure there are physical differences, but while it may be the case that only some women could be front line soldiers, most armies are only effective through logistical support and non-frontline soldiers (who make up the bulk of any force). Women could easily serve there. Gone are the patronizing days of "women and children first"--equal rights means equal burdens across society.

I think your right that women can play a vital role, and many women in USA did worked in shipyards, manufacturing jobs for government and private to help support the war efforts in WW2. Also while caring for their children, homes, farms and keeping the economy going while losing their men. We all have a part to play. The blame game won't solve anything. My grandmother worked in shipyard while my grandfather was in Pearl Harbor. Women did their part! It may not have been in the battle lines, but they helped. As for today's circumstances, women should also get this training in the very least so they are informed and backup incase we don't have enough men to fight. Men and women should be on the same team together despite our physical differences.

If there ever was a country worth defending, something that I seriously believe does not exist in today's world, it would earn the respect of it's own citizenry instead of demanding respect. Such a country would never need to resort to threatening it's citizens (conscription) into laying down their lives for it. In this age of pervasive misandry, feminist governance and excessive female entitlement, I would much rather the human race be reduced to extinction than for this status quo to continue.
