Despite six weeks of campaigning up and down the country, there are some communities who feel forgotten by politicians.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Today, the parties have taken part in a national hustings event in Manchester, to address the concerns of those living with disabilities.
We sent our reporter Ruben Reuter along.

We already know the Tories will target the disabled on welfare and that Labour will follow the same route. They believe that work is the best option but fail to understand that work environments need to change to make that possible. Removing welfare payments will only make the problems worse.

@@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts 100%. As one of those who has struggled to work for 40 years at times work has been possible, at times it hasn't, my attitude is everybody needs to be treated as individuals with a variety of needs and therefore variety of solutions. One of those solutions could be Universal Basic Income which allows everyone to live their life according to their needs, ensures money is available to boost the economy through spending power being spread wide, removes poverty and homelessness while improving health. A simple solution that's backed by economists, health care professionals and many more.

The poor and the disabled were done over during the 2010-18 austerity period. Only when the cost of living hit the middle class the noise about living standards were raised. I have mental disabilities (ADHD confirmed and medicated, PTSD and CPTSD currently being diagnosed), but the issue was it took me 3 1/2 years to get diagnosed. Not expecting a quick diagnosis on my PTSD - maybe by 2026/7. I was also refused PiP flat out (even though I'm on UC and have been for 3 years now and clearly struggling). We're the bottom of the queue, forgotten about. I don't have a life to live, I merely exist, trying to survive week on week.

Sorry to hear that, mental health care is so hard to access in most areas :( Did you know most PIP rejections get approved on appeal? And Specialisterne is a job agency that specializes in employment for neurodiverse/disabled people. Maybe you can find some help from a charity to fight the PIP rejection, and CPTSD is not unusual for neurodiverse people, perhaps others in the same boat can help you get through it. Mental health professionals are not always skilled with ND people and CBT is not useful for many people with ADHD/ASD. Hang in there, I hope things will get better.

A lot of the issues you have can also be heavily mitigated by good quality care and therapy! PTSD responds really well to good treatment,as do many conditions, but the chance of getting any treatment is next to none.. That's the real disgrace. We have had over a decade of vilification of the disabled with endless changes to the benefits system, yet people who can be treated are left languishing and stigmatized in a broken benefits system. I was really really shocked to see a graph from the ONS, showing what conditions are getting benefits, pip. Head and shoulders above everything else was anxiety and depression. These are treatable!! Most of these people are written off because of savage underfunding of mental health services, then they're slated for claiming benefits! It's nuts!

@@ColinFlowers By the way I looked it up for another person asking for data. 16million people in the UK are disabled. It's about 1 in 5 yes. If you want to go by World Health Organisation, it's about 16% or 1 in 6 people with a significant disability. You have to remember many are hidden and might even be embarrassing to discuss. So unfortunately you are wrong here. Channel 4 is correct in their reporting. The BBC once reported that 33,000 of these disabled people need 24 hour care. 50% of disabled people are working currently, and 25% have university degrees. So there's a strong case for helping those close to 8million disabled people not currently working who don't need 24 hour care. Putting measures in place even if it just helps a small percentage of us would benefit the economy massively. Having an extra few hundred thousand people paying taxes would help the system to self sustain itself. And let's remember that already half of disabled people are paying taxes to help sustain the country as well.

Meanwhile, those of us who are disabled are ignored, ostracised and denied access to even the most basic of services. I am a disabled woman and when I was homeless I was advised to have a baby in order to move up the housing register quicker. The fact that my local council is not even subtle about it's single mother support scheme and is encouraging and promoting it as a viable option (especially to vulnerable people) is criminal.

@@jj-gk6rj That's certainly what people *say.* The reality is intergenerational privation. A lot of single mothers _are_ disabled without diagnosis & have been taken advantage of, everyone forgets that it's a whole family that get's jealously ostracised from society - the precise attitude you present here. Everyone else *says* to eachother "they get _enough_ help as it is", while collective disgust rules them out from ever gathering any social capital & means of ever on-ramping to a dignified in-cast existence. Of course you've almost certainly brushed elbows, exchanged pleasantries & conducted business with many ""fathers"" of such families who've escaped the consequences of oftentimes despicable and illegal behaviours to blend back into society at large, they'll see none of the sharp end of your distain - the collective social pressure of which the mothers & children will never fully recover from. They still have to sleep rough before they're eligible for emergency accommodation & still have to be physically assaulted for police to take them seriously. Not immune to this suffering.

Great report. The fact that disabled people are a significant proportion of the population yet so often get missed out and not talked about in the media is very telling, especially when issues like the trans debate (which affects a far smaller percentage of people) gets so much airtime and political attention.

I have disabilities and was on working tax credits I was forced on to universal credit in March I still haven't had my capability assessment I'm working almost 30 hours a week and still being contacted by job centre every week to look for work and upload a CV and been told to read about sanctions 3 times this benefits system doesn't help disabled people in work at all I feel harassed and don't know what I'm supposed to do my income dropped for one month cos I had surgery and I told the stupid journal thing and now even though I've been back at work for almost 8 weeks they still won't leave me alone and even though I'm back in work and I've told them this they are still asking me for a fit note I've got no clue what's going on or what I'm supposed to do

I don’t know what effect it will have, but the day after the election was announced I preemptively contacted Keir Starmer about the impact on disabled people and how neglected I think we are. “Thank you for your email to Keir... I can confirm your views, observations and experiences have been duly noted and shared with the relevant teams.” I can only hope this has a positive impact on policy and the treatment of disabled people neglected for far too long and left out of conversations that directly impact our lives and means to life.

Saddened to see the medical model of disability being used and that being disabled seems to be equated with requiring health care; disabled employees take less sick leave that employees who are not yet disabled. Why would a disabled person be more likely to require health care than someone who is not yet disabled?

"1 in 5 Brits are disabled." (!) Surely this can only be true under an extraordinarily broad definition of "disabled". I am severely myopic (-9 diopters) and colour-blind: am I included in this statistic? At 68, I need help with some aspects of daily life which I formerly took for granted, which -- *very* fortunately, I fully realize in today's world -- I get from my family. Does that qualify me? My cousin had quite a long time off work with depression -- is she also "disabled" (or perhaps she was, and is no longer)? Anybody who breaks their leg on a skiing holiday is at least temporarily disabled, but I doubt whether it is they who are inflating this figure. More likely it is the proliferation of new "psychiatric" diagnoses like "attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder" and the ever-expanding definitions of autism (excuse me, the "autism spectrum"), dyslexia and PTSD. I know I risk being shot down as, at best, unfeeling and, at worst, a Nazi-style eugenicist, but *if* this statistic is to be taken seriously and *if* it relates principally to life-long congenital disabilities (rather than, for example, injury or the natural ageing process), then surely what is most needed is urgent action to improve our gene pool, by one means or another.
