The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr talks to Krishnan Guru-Murthy from London's ICA on the release of his new album Call the Comets. A political musician from his early days of gigging at Glastonbury, he now talks of disagreeing with Smiths frontman Morrissey over his far-right leanings, how the terrorist attack in Manchester jolted his creativity and why he thinks politicians are more desperate for fame than anyone else.

A truly fine citizen...Every word he says makes perfect sense. There's no soap box ranting, no politicking, just honest heart felt and open dialogue. Johnny Marr is an incredible musician and a great human being. He tells it like it is, but he has empathy, humility and compassion. Rare in todays world.

You are so limited in your assessment of both of them. Both contribute to music at a level few can. Sad that their history seems difficult but neither has lost a split second, and the lyrics always fresh. I won’t choose sides because there is no need to do so. Both of these men still add to my life. I like having both in my life. It is the two creatives of the best band of the twentieth century. Even though I have an ear & more theory than most, how can I ever know enough to have an ability to rank them. It isn’t possible to rank one above the other. They are both equally world class. I just listen. Two absolute masters. I love the work that each of them has produced. You may prefer one or the other. I will just enjoy their work. Neither ever disappoints. Two legends. -Dan Be the change….

@@redstar7292 terrorism is more extreme these days (1970/80s), bands formed because they had high employment It was more exciting then with so many bands trying to establish their music Punk somehow was the new wave of anti ( everything against conformist ) Most of them just wanted to play and make protest songs about Anarchy, these days they are signed to major record labels and play stadiums instead of doing long tours I expect Johnny Marr, has earned more money being a singer/writer, than he would of done staying with The Smiths

Sorry the center did not jold for the Smiths. But you need maximum artistic freedom and so did Moz. I can somewhat understand why the tension but I chalk it up to personality differences. But the Smiths legacy will live forever. As will your subsequent music. And for those with a good mind, your observations on politics is another example of your talent. Keep on being a bloke who knows what he believes & why. Truly a working class hero. Thank you for the entirety. of what you do. The ideas as well as the notes. Keep on. I´ve always thought that a "The Smiths" reunion is barely impossible and I´m not quite sure if it would even be worth at all. But a Morrissey-Marr reunion sounds more fit. No one can deny that Rourke and Joyce were an important part of it, but Marr & Morrissey are the ones that bring me or take me to all that "nostalgia" and to the memories of my youth. Instead of a "The Smiths" reunion, I´d love to see a Morrissey - Marr reunion, somehow it sounds easier to me.

As much as I adore Marr, you can't deny that Morrissey's wit and vocal acrobatics, plus his bombastic relationship with the press were a huge part of their charisma. The NME were right though, Godlike Genius is a fitting term for his guitar work and songwriting

Only really watched to hear about Morrissey. I accept that the Smiths without Marr wouldn’t have been The Smiths, That said, the fact Marr is on C4 talking “politics” means he has nothing to say except what is safe to our alleged “masters.” You have to wait a good 10 minutes in to get into it here . Still good use of the word “terse” in the interview by Marr. Almost Morrisseyesque .

What a geezer, thank goodness for him keeping some of the legacy of The Smiths intact, as for Stephen Patrick.....

Joe Josephson I really don’t like Morrissey anymore; I respect his art, but his politics.....not so much

Pathetic interviewer using Marr as a tool for Channel 4 political agenda. I’d like to see him do this to Morrissey.

Not much worse than an under prepared interviewer. Look at Cheryl Waters at KEXP on the tour in Seattle - thats how you do it. Oh and Channel 4 - its Call The Comet, singular, only 1 comet. No Comets. Could be a follow up album I guess.
