It is a government inspired crisis this time. The Treasury have to sell Bonds to cover the trade imbalance and the government spending imbalance. In order to sell them they have to raise interest rates and the old long-term, low risk, low interest, AAA investments (including Treasury Bonds), held by the banks (often due to government regulatory policy), become next to worthless. The next milestone is the 15th when the government issue a new batch of Bonds. I have approximately 350k stagnant in my portfolio that needs growth. What is the best way to take advantage of this downturn?

The thing to me is, if you invest and have other income outside of dividends then you will be able to live off dividends without selling. Which means you can pass that on to your kids which will give them a leg up in life. $52k dividends received in 2022.

This goes back to the 1980s, if not earlier, the UK has become a service industry, shopping, banking, debt whilst science/engineering has been under valued, under invested in and run into the ground. Our economy worked when we could import cheap products from China/ Taiwan etc but now these countries are becoming more wealthy and hence the cost of imported good is increasing. Also the flood of cheap highly skilled workers from Eastern Europe and further afield is drying up as wages are so low in the UK compared to the US and EU. Hunt and Sunak are just bean counters, office clerks promoted above their intellectual capacities, excel gurus, they don’t have the vision to understand or see the desperate situation this country is in, we will simply stumble into a massive recession, unemployment will skyrocket and interest rates will continue to rise for years, this will take generations to fix.

There is no wage spiral, what we have worldwide is a profit spiral. Companies are having record profits but their taxes are very low, if not inexistent. It's always easy to blame the weakest link. No chain is stronger than its weakest link.

The recent rise in interest rates, I must say, doesn't seem to be effectively curbing inflation. Instead, it's creating additional financial challenges for individuals. Cutting interest rates might alleviate some of the pressure.

But high interest rates won't encourage growth. One effect is to make people reduce their spending, so less goods will be produced, people will lose their jobs as business slows because prices won't fall at a fast enough rate. Housing markets slow, mortgages increase.....negative equity....etc etc. Rich tories don't understand (don't care about) the impacts because they are financially immune to them.

Wage-price spirals are a myth. We would have had massive deflation since the 70's if wages had any effect on inflation. Deflation is coming. A global, deflationary Greater Depression. I expect housing to lose 95% of its value. Sweden, Canada and Australia will probably have the worst housing/property collapses.

Only the less wealthy are affected. Today's inflation is not driven by demand alone. It is also driven by the greed of corporations whom the government supports. Government has to step in and subsidize, and this in turn work against anti-inflation.

Let's ignore the Elephant in the room... The government's complete lack of commitment to mitigate the energy prices! If they had implemented a proper windfall tax on the energy suppliers, this could have been used to control energy prices for EVERYONE. Instead, we got some token help for domestic users and businesses got completely hammered. Since they have to pass those costs onto the customers, prices rise by a huge amount, resulting in a massive inflation rise in ESSENTIAL goods and services. Increasing Interest rates is intended to reduce inflation by making people reduce their spending, however inflation isn't being powered by consumer spending, but by inflated energy prices, so increasing interest does very little except to increase the pain of the public (and push us further towards a recession). The only answer is to bring down energy prices

Inflation is largely driven by supply side economics, primarily due to supply chain issues due to lockdowns and then the war in Ukraine. Putting up interest rates aint really going to deter people from using petrol, gas electricity and buying food ect. Ironically higher interest rates leads to higher rental and burrowing cost which also increases inflation.

Much of the current inflation is down to all central banks including British, printing money in eye watering amounts for the past decades. The war and pandemic have not helped , but inflation was going up before the Russian invasion . The Fed in America doing very much the same....money based on huge debt..and things are getting worse . No wonder some countries are increasing their gold reserves , and people turning to a real asset.
