Protesters blocked one of London's busiest junctions by plonking a large pink table there at the start of two weeks of planned demonstrations by Extinction Rebellion. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
The group is demanding the government stop investing in all fossil fuels.

@@poolplayerpoolplayer7430 They are more often than not protesting for huge corporations to reduce their impact on the environment (it is a common misconception spread by these same mega-corporations that the general public have a huge impact that they can easily change). It is the corporations that need to be forced by the government to change their act, or nothing is going to happen.

Yes, they are for direct health. People should not breathe in car fumes and line their lungs with poison. People have the right to clean air. People are dying of air pollution and courts are ruling ‘death by pollution’ for people living on busy roads. We NEED clean air. It’s not just a fossil fuel issue.

I am fine with eliminating foreign travel, less plastic, local food and adapting all the discretionary things in life. But for the life of me I have no idea where I am going to find the ten grand for the heat pump for my house, or the twenty grand for second hand electric transport. All climate change mitigation means for me is freezing in winter and poverty.

Well, the government currently subsidises the fossil fuel industry to the tune of billions every year. Ideally that money should be redirected to things like, helping you install a heat pump, or infrastructure for renewable energy. These protestors are saying that the government has it all wrong and is directing our money and resources the wrong way. It is hard to argue with.

These people are doing what is needed. Contrary to belief, in the UK the only real move towards green energy has been in wind turbine produced electricity, and this is only because when operating there are no costs so they can sell electricity at huge profit. We need to address diesel SUVs immediately, we need better public transport, we need to massively reduce car travel and replace cars with whatever is better. Don't bash these people, join forces with them!

I mean our government is literally being taken to court, in real life right now, for failure to deal with illegal levels of air pollution caused by fossil fuels. I can assure you people take it very seriously even if they also have a sense humour and creativity about it. That's why many of them are willing to make sacrifices and take big risks to stand up for what they believe in. Also do your picnics usually involve you chaining yourself to a table overnight and shitting in a nappy? I think I'll eat alone thanks.

@@GreencampRhodie No, the whole reason it is a crisis is that we are not superior and CANNOT control the consequences of our actions. Is this really that difficult to understand? Also, what about the several thousand peer reviewed studies which show significant warming, are these not credible just because the actual science disagrees with you?

Thinking about the reality of the climate emergency and the painfully slow and weak response of human society to this existential threat. Does anyone seriously think we don't need to change political and economic systems world wide to better reflect everybody's wishes and needs, and the needs of the planet, rather than the wishes and needs of an elite few?

Why should a person make themselves far less employable and put themselves at a huge disadvantage when many like yourself in society, rather than respecting and following their lead, will simply sneer at them and carry on wrecking the planet? The people who refuse to heed climate change do so because it gives them a fiscal advantage over those who take action, and only by removing this fiscal advantage will we see real progress.

ADD A PHONE PROTEST Call the target bank in your county (HSBC Bank, etc.) Jam their phones. Give them a storm of customer complaints and huge financial losses, until they stop financing big oil and coal conglomerates like Exxon Mobil polluting the planet for profit causing Global Warming.
