Kin is mum to two boys, and a first generation British South Asian. Her parents are originally from India, where Post Natal Depression still has a lot of stigma. So when Kin started showing symptoms of post natal depression a couple of months after the birth of her second son, she was faced with a lot of pressure and expectation. Here's her experience of post natal depression within the Asian community.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I only have one, and I'm completely put off from having another because of how bad my PPD & A were with my son, AND I feel the same way you did that you have this bond with your first born, and now your attention will be divided. I'd never had anxiety in my life, and all of a sudden when my son was newborn, I'd lie awake for the few hours between the mid-night feeding and morning, shaking, stomach feeling sick because I was so nervous and anxious about the day ahead. It was the most emotional I've been in my entire life, and I wish that the concept of new motherhood we see online being this moment in time when baby is calmly sleeping and cute, and you have time to do your hair and makeup would stop. There needs to be more real talk about how life-altering the whole first year of motherhood can be.

So sorry you had to go through that. I relate to what you are saying. It is not easy especially when you have minimal support. My first was not too bad but after my 2nd and then even my 3rd my PPD & A was a lot worse. I am glad there are more people talking openly about such matters now.

It is definitely something hard, I am a mother from Colombia and I have been in the US for 2 years, I had to go through my postpartum without help or family, we are just extremely powerful and strong mothers♥️

I find that it's easier when you live with the extended family. I asked both my parents and my mother I law to stay with me after I gave birth

You are so lucky to have that. I think if I was able to have my mom here it would have helped. Not my reality but it takes a village and I hope others can have this. I hired support and am very lucky I could do that with my second after realizing how much I needed it after my first.

I had my 3rd baby April last year and it was extremely challenging time what with lockdown too. I suffered with PP depression in silent for along time. And only recently spoke to my GP who prescribed me antidepressants! It's been a very difficult time for me! 😒

I just barely found out I'm pregnant, my test came up positive pretty obviously and I'm so excited for this new experience, but I'm interested to learn about post partum stuff and just whatever effects you mentally about pregnancy and new motherhood and all of the things. I find it super important to educate myself as much as possible before I bring this new little human into the world, so thank you so much for adding to the wealth of education that we as mom's and future mothers can look for and learn about.
