When Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 hit extreme turbulence, it felt like being on the “crest or precipice of a really tall roller coaster", passenger Dzafran Azmir recounted. The 28-year-old had no idea how badly his fellow passengers were injured until the flight made an emergency landing in Bangkok. “These panels above our heads … They were literally broken and shattered by people's heads and bodies impacting them." And this is why when I fly with my wife, I've AWAYS stressed to buckle up whenever we're in our seats. I've flown with Singapore Airlines more times than I can count, they're one of the best airlines in the industry and have never experienced any issues like this. The most I've ever felt was slight turbulence, which is quite normal and can happen. This imo, was a freak accident that could've happened to any flight, and from this passenger's description, it seems to be extreme turbulence.

Questions about why the Pilot and copilot were not in advance avoiding the Turbulence location and whether were they falling asleep
@davidtiessen7713
@davidtiessen7713 27 күн бұрын
Maybe you should do some research before blaming the pilots & suggesting they're asleep. “We were about 30 miles off track flying around the thunderstorms" said the pilot & as for the airline: It has a robust safety record, consistently ranking among the world’s safest. The last fatal accident involving the carrier occurred in 2000. As for how this occured, its going to be a combination of rising hot air below the plane and colder, descending air mass above and when an aircraft is in flight, it’s essentially balancing on a column of air. If that air suddenly becomes less dense (as it does when it’s heated), the aircraft may experience a decrease in lift and start to descend/ sink. They're near the equator, hot air is rising. Additionally, if the aircraft encounters a pocket of cooler, denser air that is sinking (as might happen on the edge of an anticyclone), the increased density could indeed exert a downward force on the aircraft, causing it to descend more rapidly. Thus, both rising warm air (which is less dense) and sinking cool air (which is more dense) creates a “double whammy” effect on an aircraft where the air mass below provides less lift and the air mass above exerts atmospheric pressure downward. 6000 feet in mere minutes would be absolutely terrifying and nothing these pilots could do would stop that plane from rapidly descending.

It's always the case, there are a lot of passengers who refuse to listen to the safety advices given by the flight crew. One of these advices is that flight crew would always advise passengers to have their seat belts on through out the journey although at times the seat-belt sign would be turned off. Passengers won't learn their lessons until incidents like this happens, but then it's too late for some people. The best advice is to keep the seat belt on through out the journey even though the ride looks smooth (despite the slight discomfort) as who knows, the plane may hit an air pocket or turbulence so suddenly that the pilot may not have sufficient time to give out a warning.

Problem is that people are ignorant about exactly what is taking place when they are flying on an airliner, it’s a pressurised aluminium tube blasting through the air at very high speeds and if it hits divergent air currents of differential pressure and temperature it’s going to cause very sharp and jarring movements due to the shear speed it’s moving through that air. I just came off a flight from Dubai where passengers were up and about all the time oblivious to the danger even when the pilot had illuminated the seatbelt sign, there were a couple of mothers with babies in arms standing around while the warning light was illuminated and people sleeping across seat rows without seatbelts on for almost the entire 13hr flight!. Clear air turbulence can happen at any time on airliners and it’s up to passengers to take responsibility for their own safety and belt up whenever they’re able to for as much of the flight as possible only getting up when essential anything other than essential ie toilet breaks is risky.

Singapore Airlines 777-300ER got very good seats arrangement, their economy is 3-3-3 layout, that's why no others passengers dead except one old passenger believe is got heart issues. If greedy airlines with cramped seats 3-4-3 layout, the situation can be worse due cramped of passengers, even worst the plane may be crash due balanced issue that the pilot cannot take the control of the aircraft, especially mostly passengers don't wear seat belt, walk around, in toilet etc.

Um..... Plane and people go up and down together ONLY if you're ATTACHED to the plane like wearing your seatbelts securely . If not: plane go up, people go down. Plane go down, people go up.

when i was in the Japan airplane from Japan to Singapore, there was also turbulence, i now how it feels like what he said is like a roller coaster ride. that's why i kept my seat belt throughout the entire flight. i slept at the beginning awaken by the turbulence . despite there were signs above saying that is okay to unfasten seatbelt .Noo i better kept the seat belt throughout.

I'm never a great fan of Singlish or Manglish. But this young man even though with his slight American lilt speaks English flawlessly. He described the situation flawlessly. His English is very good by Malaysian standards ...and his spoken is also far better than what the majority of Singaporeans are able to dish out!!!

Clear-air turbulence is usually impossible to detect with the naked eye and very difficult to detect with a conventional radar, with the result that it is difficult for aircraft pilots to detect and avoid it.

Singapore Airlines are one of the best among all in S.E Asia. I spent my past 20 years traveling. This could be counted as the worst one that I have ever seen. It would be been even worse than this if with other lower quality airlines. Prayers for the victims and their families.

Just like rogue waves at sea catch you by surprise, so can unseen and unreported turbulence in the air. Wear your seat belt at all times you are seated, and take the risk when you are walking about or stretching. The risk is always there and neither transport pilots nor Boeing can change that. Bravo Singapore personnel!
