"I'm supposed to be diplomatic, but members of this House know that I call a spade a spade. This is a red herring," said Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan as he addressed Dr Mahathir Mohamad's comments that Malaysia's water deal with Singapore is "morally wrong". Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir had said Singapore, as a "rich" nation, should not depend on the "poor". Read more: cna.asia/2Vs3Zq7

Defiant GTI lol joke of the day. You must be a Malusian. Go back to school or google and learn what defines a statehood. Malaysia no longer exist on two reasons - exit of Singapore thus MA63 becomes invalid. Even if we give chances since Malusia is a beggar country, it’s invalidate itself by amending it’s constitution in 1976 with regard to the status of Sabah and Sarawak. Technically, the country Malusia you see now is not a federation and a country anymore. Hahaha, it wasn’t challenged yet because Indonesia and Philippines and the Borneo states havent fought hard enough for their rights. 😅 but regardless technically Malaysia don’t exist.

Now this is what I like in Parliament. Facts and chronologically ordered. Now I understand the issue. In Malaysia parliament, it sounds like the ancient beruk saying eyy oiii. Need to wait awhile the new generation take over (those who is like Syed Saddiq). Malaysia could be a rich country, but the investment and the issues coupled with corruption. Need quite a cleansing before we move forward. Sad reality.

Watching the Dr Vivian Balakrishnan's reply and explanation again, i couldn't help but admire his clarity of thought and explanation without getting being too emotional like politicians. More importantly is his explanation of the philosophy underlying Singapore's governance, as well as its strict adherence to international treaties and obligations. That earns the trust of many governments and corporations which see Singapore as trustworthy to place their investment and to do business. Singaporeans are very proud to have such ministers in government.

Wasi whay nonsense. The agreement was inked initially between Sultan of Johor and British authirity in Singapore in 1926. Subsequently it was rwnewed in 1962. Tge scenario that time was that Singapore was about to joint Tanah Melayu to form Malaysia. There is a clause on price revision aftwr 25 years. SINGAPORE in Malaysia became a problem when Lee Kuan Yew purposely challenged Malay rights that was agreed upon independenxe of Tanah melayu. In the nutshell, Malay Rulers in 1957 would have agreed to grant citizenships to non malays in scale unrivalled on thia planet only if Malays were accorded special.position IN return to mind boggling citizenship to non malays. LEE KUAN YEW portrayed Malays as racist. True to Malay characyer of being merciful, Tunku decided Singapore must go. Other leaders on this planet would have simply thrown Lee Kuwn yew under detention . As for price of water sold, honestly are you thinking 3 cents per thousand gallon of water is reasonable today. Thank God, it is Malaysia thay supplies water to Singapore, not the other way around. And tge insult like Malaysia loves to bully Singapore does not make sense. If that is the intention, Tunku would simply lock Lee Kuan Yew the way Kaun Yew did to his political opponent.

Actually in the past like 1960s up till 1990s the Opposition was more vocal and sometimes had better ideas than PAP - i had relatives who got to watch the uncensored versions back then. But PAP eventually managed to silence their opponents or convince them to join PAP . And as time went on "the culture" of speaking up and rebuttals in Parliment has changed. Nowadays most of the "bright minds" are already part of PAP - so not much debate (unlike other countries) since most of the members of parliment think alike. Good or bad? I think the lower classes in Singapore are more worried about "legalised corruption and legalised cronyism" but feel helpless to stop the trend.

@Septimius Severus you have not been doing research a lot i think, by the time the 1962 water agreement expire in 2061, Singapore will estimated to be already self sustain in water already, like what Dr Vivian said, we invest in infrastructure ahead of time, we are already building more desalination plants, we COULD be self-sustain if there is a need, but currently the COST of making water from sea, is still > than buying raw water from Johore, so can you explain why will we WANT to be 100% self substain if there is a cheaper source for the time being, if in a real war, and the water supply is cut, of cos i think the production of sea->fresh water will be RAMP up to counter the drop. but at a higher price for your tap water at home. Singapore knows eventually when the 2061 expiry comes, Malaysia may jolly well not renew or raise the price, hence it is already making preparations ahead of time.
@teerificbitch
@teerificbitch 3 жыл бұрын
@Septimius Severus As Tse Hong Ling noted above, Singapore is well primed to become self sustaining in its water projects. Also, Indonesia's massive water pipe project to Singapore would be a huge consideration for Singapore if there ever was a fall out between Malaysia & Singapore.It's only not been considered anymore, because Malaysia had no imminent risk of denouncing the water treaty agreement.

You work very hard to improve your recipes, you open 18 h per day incl. weekends, you rip your arxe open doing promotions, and after 2 - 3 years your stall is famous and people Q for your great food. What happens next? The landlord will come and ask for $12000 / month. You certainly disagree, have to move out, new location is lesser good, you lose half of your customer basis.

This is digression at its finest. Heres the facts without any form of biasedness. This is all WAYANG at its best. When Mahathir was in power back then, he had the opportunity to ask for a review during the window, but he didnt. He knew damn well inflation is obviously a thing yet he didnt ask for a review. Now he wants to make up for his mistake by playing victim and blaming Singapore so that he doesnt come off as guilty. Did Mahathir forget that apart from treated water itself, more than $100 mil was invested in Johor Dam and pipelines project which benefitted Johoreans as well? Did Mahathir forget that during flood crisis, while malaysia send their Bomba to help, SG send the army along with PUB technicians to provide treated water to the victims by setting up pump stations? Did Mahathir forget the instances whereby certain sources of freshwater dried up and the agencies called SG for help to send excess treated water? At the end of the day, an agreement is an agreement. Whoever signed the agreement on Malaysia's part was to be blamed for not taking inflation into account along with Mahathir's error in assuming that isnt a need for a review back then.

John wei, Sabah is part of Malaysia now. Sulu Sultanate ceased to exist in 1915 when the then Sultan renounced his sovereignty through Carpenter Treaty. As such Sulu Sultanate has no right to claim Sabah. This is very clear during the most defining moment of Sabah history which was the change of atatis from being a British colony to that of a state within Malaysia. Nobody asked the consent from.Sulu Sultanate in 1962 simply because the kingdom has already ceased to exist at that time. On the contrary, the consents of Malay Rulers were essential durinh the journey to independence of Malaya in 1957. Simply for the reasons that the Highnesses in 1957 were sovereign recognised by the whole world. As for watwr supply to Singapore, one of the clause is rwvision of water price after 25 years. It was inked first by then Sultan of Johor in 1927. In 1962, Malaya signed the renewal treaty with the British( Sibgapore was still a colony). One of the clause says that the revision can be made after 25 years

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, apart from personally choosing not to review the price of water in 1987 , had a further opportunity to revise the price. In a letter to then Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, Tun Dr Mahathir offered to sell water to Singapore at a "fair price" of 60 sen per 1,000 gallons, in return for concessions on other elements of an overall package. Responding to the offer in a letter dated April 23, 2001, Mr Lee said that if there was "give and take on both sides, an agreement is possible". It was in this spirit that Mr Lee visited Kuala Lumpur in September 2001. But while negotiations were in progress, the Malaysian government raised the asking price to RM3 per 1,000 gallons, 100 times the existing price of raw water. This demand made it difficult for common ground to be reached, and led to a stalemate in the negotiations. Rather than rummage through history and indulge in the politics of envy, Dr Mahathir should look into the future and see how the issue of water price can be resolved. Until then, Singapore will stand by the terms of the 1962 Water Agreement. Any breach of that agreement would, according to Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, call into question the Separation Agreement, which is the basis for Singapore's existence as an independent sovereign state.

Making Singapore poorer will not make Malaysia richer. Malaysia and Singapore had the same starting line. Yet, under two different leaders Mr. Lee Kuan Yew and Doctor Mahathir, Singapore progressed much faster. Malaysia has more resources, more land, more people, has oil, gold, tin, rubber, etc. Yet Singapore still progressed faster. What policies went wrong? Which of the policies worked? Those should be the questions. But instead Mahathir decided to be petty and allowed himself to be filled with hate. Mahathir is now trying to incite hate and sow discord between Johor and Singapore. If he is this small as a human being, I think he should step down. He has dismantled UMNO. He had done enough. I think it is high time for him let go and let Anwar take the helm.

Remember, he did mention that the price Singapore sells its water back to Malaysia, has already been "heavily subsidized", and this was based on the contract which both nations have agreed on a very long time ago, Singapore at that time was not as prosperous as it is today and knowing that they still agreed to the deal, do you know how much it costs to treat water? running an operation island wide not only that, but also to Johor? There are equipment that has to be maintained, workers to that needs their salary, just as Singapore grows, the standard of living grows too, what makes you think that all these do not need additional cost. There is only one thing Mahathir can do, that is to just void the contract and cut all water supply to Singapore, that of course would be killing of Singapore slowly but what would the whole world think of Malaysia? Yes, a cruel country, no matter how much Mahathir emphasis on how Singapore is "morally wrong" to sell water at a higher price but remember, it has already been subsidized and there is the contract to back Singapore, we did nothing wrong, not only that but remember our cost of living increased so you have to account for that too, sure Johor can very well survived on the water they have, i am sure they have some sort of water purification facility. Now back to the water, Mahathir can talk about the "morale" he emphasized but the position he put Singapore in is so called "threatening" us, he can choose to stop the flow of water into Singapore just like many of his citizens would want but what about the morale that he solely emphasis on? What will the whole world think of Malaysia? Singapore has many investors and countries which it has bilateral relations to help out us out, either that or we will die off, but again what will the whole world think of Malaysia, i'm sure most of the citizens will say that they don't care but wait a few years later and see what happens, investors will leave even countries would want to break ties.

It just reflects how one dimensional and low resolution Malaysian politicians are capable of, as it plays out in the international theatre, just shows in plain sight how completely incompetent and outrageous these bullies are. Malaysia would benefit in so many ways had they choose to seek a more reasonable working relationship with Singapore. History ties us together, they can continue on the animosity or work together to a better tomorrow.

@@yangerek78 This has nothing to do with kiasu. Talk is cheap. The water agreement is sanctity which Dr, M also agreed when asked. Enough said. Let's take this water agreement issue to international arbitration and see what is the result. Nobody is stopping Dr. M to do that right? Or it is up to the Sultan of Johor to decide? I think the Sultan of Johor has reasons to believe that the state of Johor also benefited with the current arrangement.

@@yangerek78 It is not free water to begin with. An agreement is an agreement. Moreover the agreement is sanctity (you should go check the meaning of sanctity). They have lost their chance to review the water pricing long ago and it is then Dr. M who said they did not need to review. Have you ever sign any agreement with any one or buy anything that requires you to sign an agreement? What is an Agreement to you? Say you sign an agreement to buy a 99 year condo with a developer, Then you pay 100 dollars for example, then 50 years later the developer say you are rich so I want to review the original agreed price to 1000 (figuratively)..you are ok with that?

Making Singapore poorer will not make Malaysia richer. That is true. But it will make Malaysia look better. The contrast between Singapore and Malaysia is a constant rebuke and humiliation to Mahathir. Why is Singapore, a small island with no natural resources performing so much better that Malaysia with its huge natural wealth including oil. When oil was over US$100, where did that money go to? Now Malaysia is impoverished while Singapore is still rich. This is an unbearable disgrace to Mahathir. Every night he bang his head against the wall in anguish. But being the arrogant man that he is, he could not admit the truth. So he searched for an excuse, it is because Singapore took their water. What does Mahathir know about morality? He backstabbed Anwar with false accusations and jailed him all because of his greed for power. He is an unscrupulous criminal who should be locked up in jail instead of being let loose to do more evil.

First time I'm seeing this video. I think this is what LKY meant by "how to differentiate ourselves from our neighbours in order to compete and survive, and also get along with them" I'm very impressed with Mr. Vivian Balakrishnan. I know this is late, but "Well done, Singapore." I hope our Malaysian ministers can follow the footsteps of Singapore.

Hon. Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, had clearly explained the agreements which are still in force. You need to consider the senile ex-PM who still keep saying the Malays are poor. What did he do when he was the PM. He only enriched his cronies and his sons and daughter to become billionaires.

There is no "morally" wrong or right when 2 parties enter a contract, there is only benefits and profits. Would a bank enter a contract to loan money base on moral grounds? Did anyone had to take any moral high grounds when u sign an employment contract with a company for a job? A comment that make no sense whatsoever. Hopefully Malaysians will not mislead by his comments to incite discontent between both countries.
