"Supplying the army in full became an impossibility. The lack of grass and feed weakened the remaining horses, almost all of which died or were killed for food by starving soldiers. Without horses, the French cavalry ceased to exist; cavalrymen had to march on foot. Lack of horses meant many cannons and wagons had to be abandoned. Starvation and disease took their toll, and desertion soared. Many of the deserters were taken prisoner or killed by Russian peasants. Badly weakened by these circumstances, the French military position collapsed."

The only thing is, none of the Marshall's died in Russia, the only ones that did die were lannes, in 1809, bessieres in 1813 after Russia after also being hit by a cannonball like lannes, but other than that, correct

Ney took that the winter like a champ - unfortunately his men did not have his same resilience. The ice and cold didn’t bother him, and all the Cossacks in the world couldn’t stop him from escaping Russia. If every soldier had the same immunities as Ney, perhaps more soldiers could have made it out alive. Unfortunately a soldier, let alone a general, such as Ney was much, much too uncommon.

If you only knew how right you are. Not just back then, but if France had just advanced to Berlin in WW1 instead of the government ordering the marshals to stop. If France had stayed with her ally Prussia in the 7 years war, instead of flipping to the Austrian side. Damn it! Our Great Destiny is still ahead of us it seems.

@@Mousquetaire-du-Roi France couldn’t advance to Berlin in ww1. It was exhausted and dependent on it allies, who wouldn’t allow it. Furthermore, the German army still had a large force on occupied French soil, and while an offensive war was one thing, a war to defend Germany itself was another.The French leadership really wanted to hold a victory in Berlin- they planned for it and told the Russians even in 1914, but they couldn’t.

@@shivmalik9405 actually in 1918 the army of the balkan commanded by franchet d'esperey was able to reach Berlin with the austro-hungarian, railrod System (they surrendered). so it was actually possible

I feel sad for Napoleon army. Some of these soldiers were born on the coast of Mediteranean Sea, lived most of their life in Southern France, drank wine, ate croissants and died just at the edge of Europe in deadly winter. And same with German soldiers. And now the same story with migrants at Belarus-Poland border, they did not know what late autumn/winter is like in Eastern Europe :)

you know, its not like the russians dont starve and freeze to death you know, just because the french and germans suffer the cold, doesnt mean the russians have it any better stalin realised the situation very well, thats why he gave the orders to attack during winter, to stop the germans from resupplying for the summer, as the russians had lost their ukrainian bread basket and were drowing in refuguees, thus sending them in to freeze and charge the germans is more strategically effective and trying to save everyone with a country that can no longer supply them. this was the tide turning strategy that turned the war, this is why russia survives invasions, not because of the cold, but because they understand sacrifice for survival unlike anyone else

Even so, he lost the majority of his men during the summer of 1812. Logistics in Russia are nearly impossible, and to that add the rasputistsa, that deadly mud season which makes logistics even harder, and of course, scorched earth policies.

Not really. Since Napoleon lost his whole army while retreating, he had to quickly assemble a new one that was poorly trained and ill-equipped. For most countries that participated, Waterloo was just a way to show that they participated in the war at least in some meaningful way. They joined for political reasons because Napoleon was doomed to lose the war even if he would win the battle.

Lol the coalition almost lost this battle even tho they fought the remnants of what was "La Grande Armée" of Napoléon so yes "Prussians (Germans)" can brag about the future Franco-Prussian war later in the century but the Napoleonic era was a total humiliation for Prussia. Its Russia and its winter like always that did all the work

Honestly its sad how napoleon went from small dude to the Big sigma on the contenent then back to literly nothing just due to his ambition got the better of him. But Honestly imagine the lives of normal french citizenry when this happened and them marching with him to his greatest battles like austerlitz what an amazing sight to see.
