I flew the Twin Otter and Beaver out of YWH in early 2000 . Summer was always a challenge due to high winds and boats . etc . This brings back memories of me being a young man . HAHA . Thanks for the great video / The float flying was the most fun and challenging flying i ever did in my 35 years of working as a pilot .

During the second takeoff (the Twin Otter) the pilot performed an interesting maneuver where he used a touch of aileron to lift the right float first. By getting that float up off the water he reduced the drag caused by the floats in the water by 50%, allowing the aircraft to accelerate to takeoff speed just a little faster. This is known by seaplane pilots as “walking it off”.

We actually stayed at the Coast hotel shown in your film, and I well remember waking up each morning to the sound of Harbour Air aircraft taking off. Becoming all too common now. Boat owners not bothering to familiarize themselves with the "rules of the road" of harbours they may choose to visit before arriving there and/or those locals who purchase a boat and drop it in the water after thinking they've covered all the bases by making sure there's a fully stocked fridge full of booze.

Hey Corrie , A sailboat under power is a power boat . For the rules of navigation a seaplane on the water under power is also a powerboat until it lifts off . I am single engine land and sea pilot and a USCG licensed Capt . Enjoyed your video .

Nicely done video, and a trip down memory lane for me! Last visit to Victoria we stayed at the Inn at Laurel Point and enjoyed watching the HA sea planes come and go. Wow, many of those planes are my age...

I was amazed at the age of some of these planes. 70 years of exposure to saltwater and still going strong !

Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing. I have flown with Harbor air out of Vancouver in a Beaver where I sat in the right seat. I am a licensed pilot, but of course I could not so much as touched the controls, but I sure wanted to. I’ve flown a lot of aircraft, but never a seaplane.

I don't know what happened to my post yesterday so i'll try again. This and the Beaver accident in Vancouver should be required viewing for leisure boaters in both locations before they are allowed on the water.

I live in Vic West and see float planes taking off and landing from my apartment. When landing, it always looks like they are crashing when they disappear behind the buildings.

Victoria has one of the most beautiful skylines that I have seen, from a boat perspective. St. Thomas, USVI, where I live, has another. We see boats always in the way of our daily seaplanes but usually they are resolved without harbor police. They DO come close, though. Stop by someday to see. I’ll give you a tour of the #SandfloorSynagogue, one of the oldest on the Western Hemisphere. It is windy (for the boater, maybe) and we have fewer boaters who do not understand rules … but more drunken ones, I’m sure. Nice music. A boat under way is more maneuverable than a seaplane taking off and should give way! Final rule hardly ever obeyed: Do whatever it takes to avoid a collision even disregarding the rules temporarily until the danger is past!

In general, motorized craft have to give way to sail powered boats. Lots of exceptions, maybe in sea plane landing areas. But here, the sailboat is running on its engine.

Sail boats are generally owned by rich people. They won't get fined

Although I could have some understanding for a boat under sail and somewhat at mercy of the wind, that boat was under engine power. Too many incompetent people in control of cars, boats, etc.

I’m new to seaplanes and have a simple newbie question. Why are we only seeing museum pieces in operation here? I can’t imagine trusting a 70 year old airframe that’s been operating in salt water all those years. Isn’t there anything more modern available for operations like this? (I do realize that these planes have been retrofitted with turbo shaft engines that weren’t available when these airframes first took flight. But still, material science has progressed tremendously since the 1950’s.) Beautiful city, Victoria. I took my elderly parents there on a vacation once. We arrived by car ferry from Seattle.

Lovely video clips of Victoria harbour seaplane operations, but spoiled by the title. I do take strong exception to your characterization as "Chaos at Victoria Harbour! Wayward . . .", which it certainly was not. There was a sailboat where it should not have been. It was directed clear by Victoria Harbour Authority and operations continued in an orderly fashion, but never descending into chaos. Perhaps the purpose was to get viewer attention, but the result was misleading and unprofessional.

That's not chaos - it's a quick resolution of a potentially hazardous situation. Everyone was on the ball - EXCEPT the sailboat. Are they fined for that incursion?

Just proves that Victoria like Vancouver harbor is poorly marked for the seaplane runway. They should be better marked with buoys with flashing strobe lights that indicate a takeoff or landing like they have in Nanaimo. Time Transport Canada got its act together before there is another accident like in Vancouver. This is a harbor first and an airport second.

I used Harbour Air between Vancouver BC and Vancouver Island, One of the highlights of that business trip. But as a Finn, I was a bit worried about the Island end because of possible driftlogs, we have those too near papermills. And, the saddest thing I learned that thay are planning to ruin those wonderful planes by turning them electric... I will not be using those Flying Ladyshaves, just because the danger of the now available battery technology. A battery fire would just kill everyone on board, and as the insurance companies will consider the risks involved, the insurance costs alone will make them switch back to real engines. The green stupidity must be stopped, no matter what. As is well documented, the Green Movement was created to cause harm to the West. The DDR was ordered by the Soviet Union to invent a movement that is not openly leftist. DDR then ordered the West German communists to contact former naz1s (yes...) who had already started creating a green party. That "unholy alliance" was based on common hatred against the West and will to cause harm to the Western industry and societies, The first Green Party meeting was held 1976, and from there is "the photograph all the Greens of the world would like to destroy"; the West German communists celebrated with former naz1s.
