This is the thing that happens in every D&D game. You hint that the players should run, they don't. An NPC tells the characters to run, they don't. A huge monster arrives that is going to kill everyone unless they run, they don't. Gotta love it
@micahnewby7964
@micahnewby7964 6 ай бұрын
That's bordering on unfair of you how you're framing it like clueless do-gooders ignoring every warning when in reality what do you expect? I mean how fun would D&D be if every PC just ran away all the time?
@brockmarie
@brockmarie 6 ай бұрын
I mean, they TRIED to run, but it initially seemed impossible to outrun their attackers, who were faster than the PCs. It didn't become apparent until later that there was a "safe zone" or where they should be heading. With the party split, up trees and behind rocks (which seemed like decent strategies at the time), those closer to the "right direction" weren't willing to leave their friends behind. Add some unfortunate dice rolls, you really can't say they weren't trying to get to safety.
@matroqueta6825

@@brockmarie This has happened to me in the past as a player, by the time it became obvious that the only chance we had was to run half the party was cornered and would not be able to get it out, we wouldn't even be able to recover the bodies of the fallen It's tough to handle those situations. As a DM you don't want to TPK the party, but a lot of players will preferr a TPK over a HPK (half party kill)

I love Tom's pre-combat disclaimer, with all the little rules and details it's so easy to mess something up or even to decide that you want to do something differently on purpose because it works better for you and your group. At the end of the day all that really matters is that everyone's having a good time.

@IceMetalPunk
@IceMetalPunk 6 ай бұрын
@@AzureImperium7701X There's another way to balance that: Rule of Cool + Consequences. Always say yes to what they try to do (within reason), but the crazier they want to be, the crazier the unforeseen consequences are. Like, maybe they're expecting "yes, and... you kill the enemy", but what they get is "yes, and... you kill the enemy, but the magic of your spell -- which wasn't intended to be used this way, and is thus unstable -- infuses the nearby trees and awakens them." They wanted to kill one thing, and they did, but now they have several more enemies they didn't expect because of their choices.

I love that he cares about new people feeling comfortable in his hobby and that he understands even experienced players, including himself can benefit from hearing out loud that it’s ok to get things wrong. It’s such a thoughtful thing to include, and the fact that Holly did a similar thing in the game she ran solidifies my suspicions that Chaotic Evil will be an excellent and welcoming place to direct people looking to learn more about the amazing world of TTRPGs

I do applaud them trying different rules for moving diagonally but making each diagonal 10ft seems a bit much, I would suggest looking at how they do it in Pathfinder where every other diagonal movement is 10ft, a bit harder to keep track of but does make more sense.
@BaronSpamedi

Couldn't they just get a hexagonal print on their maps?
@Arlenthasala
@Arlenthasala 6 ай бұрын
@@BaronSpamedi unfortunately that would cause more issues with spell casting, dnd is designed with a 5ft grid in mind so any change to that formula would require a lot of jiggery pokerry.
@BaronSpamedi
@BaronSpamedi 6 ай бұрын
@@Arlenthasala forgive my ignorance, but why? Couldn't you just say each hex represents 5 feet? Why would that be functionally detrimental to spellcasting, and surely it would be more accurate than casting a spell on a diagonal using the square grid at halved movement distances? Board games like Gloomhaven use area of effect spells on a hex grid.

I dont want this to come off as annoying rules lawyering, because I know its something I have also messed up myself and I wouldn't expect it to work that way, but if a rogue crits a sneak attack, the sneak attack dice are also doubled. Same thing for hunter's mark, paladin smites, battlemaster maneuvers and the like. Its something I often forget especially for fighter maneuvers so no harm done.

Yep P196 says, "If the attack involves other damage dice, such as from the rogue's Sneak Attack feature, you roll those dice twice as well.", the notable exceptions being half-orc's savage attack and Barbarian's Brutal Critical as these are not part of the attack but are "extra" after the attack lands.

Very fun episode! I want to note: the DM's handbook itself says that fun is more important than rules, and I love the way you rule things, while still paying attention to game balance (i.e. not allowing a bonus action disengage, since that's a full class feature for Rogues - but still giving a reward for clever ideas!). On that note - per Rules As Written, you can move through ally spaces - but it counts as difficult terrain (in other words, a space that would cost 5 ft of movement, now costs 10!) Excited for more of this adventure 🥰

@@brockmarie This episode, Tom has demonstrated what it means to be a true DM. "Your players forged a connection with a wolf? They used multiple spell slots to befriend and communicate with it? They're all invested in whether this wolf survives and is safe? Then... kill the doggo. And make sure he dies violently. Happy players are for Disney games, not D&D." 😂 I say this as someone who created my current D&D character intentionally to have a happy family, to buck the trend, and our DM immediately said, "Don't worry, I'll fix that." It's a little over a year into the campaign, and yes, both his parents are now dead, one murdered in front of him. D&D is all about tragedy. Liam O'Brien understands this 😂
