Something obnoxious about all this is how the "jokes" are based on dated conservative scapegoating. "Ooh, look, a Bud Light advertisement reference! Now clap!" Jesus, DW, the Dylan Mulvaney story has been dead for what feels like a year. It really does not only date the movie by restricting its jokes to "recent" pop culture, but it also restricts the audience only to the small group of goobers who even care a year or two later. It's JUST a Daily Wire film and that's it. An audience of a couple thousand people.

Never forget the whole reason they had to do this movie: The original plan was to film a "documentary" where a bunch of Daily Wire guys would identify as women and compete in a real women's basketball league. Unfortunately for them, they found out the league would require them to actually go on HRT for a year. So they had to just make up their fantasy in the film instead 😆

I'm reminded a movie, The Ringer, where a man pretends to be mentally handicapped to participate in the Special Olympics. The same kind of story... a man pretends to be something he's not to take advantage of a sports league that's supposedly easier for him to conquer. There are two main differences, though: He's doing it for selfless reasons yet feels bad, and he can't win without help. Turns out, a regular person can't just dominate at sports against trained athletes.

They coulda just done Bad News Bears/A League of Their Own/Benchwarmers with a girls basketball team that has to face some bruiser trans team in a tournament, where they have to recruit “the team” and they get get a butch Britney Griner giant girl and some benchsitter point guard from the guys team and put him in an obvious Jawanna man wig, convincing them join cause they like a girl on the team. But that would be an actual movie script. You could even keep the divorced dad shit but make him the coach who’s trying to get his daughter’s team to win over the purity of the game or some shit. But this movie was probably written by nerds who never even watched sports movies, let alone played sports

None of this is remotely offensive, because they're trying so hard. When someone spends millions on a film specifically designed to piss me off, I don't think 'How dare they!', I think 'That's so cute, they wasted all that times and money and all I had to do was exist.' About the "Your parents aren't really proud of you" scene: a common belief among homophobes, particularly in conversion therapy, is that people are LGBT because of their parents (them not loving enough, some kind of childhood trauma by their hands etc.) Which is why that scene seemed so insidious but I don't think the Chapo guys fully picked up the conservative rhetoric there.

Something that stands out to me, why basketball? They do have a scene where they compete in track, which is basically a test on how far your muscles and lungs can take you, so that makes sense in a battle of the sexes scenario. But basketball is like strategy, teamwork, hand eye coordination. None of those things are plausibly seen as things (cis) men or (cis) women are better at. Outside of maybe height, what advantage does a trans woman or cis man pretending to be a trans woman have? It reminds me of the skateboarder who claimed that trans women have an unfair advantage, when scientifically speaking, female bodies are better at balancing (therefore skateboarding) than male bodies.

The main characters, men who are ptetending to be women in sports for fame and money, are literally the boogeyman the Daily Wire says is evil... but it's played for laughs and as an action committed by some pitiable guys who are down on their luck. They are NOT treated as the existential threat to women everywhere that bigots and TERFs say they are. If anything, we're supposed to SYMPATHIZE with at least some of them! In the film they claim because high school male athletes can compete with professional female athletes, a nonathletic middle aged man can therefore effortlessly beat professional female athletes. They didn't do any research into sports.

My girlfriend has practiced various martial arts for years, not to a professional level but pretty well. I am a reasonably athletic guy but I have done next to no martial arts training. Let me tell you, in any kind of sparring, she can utterly destroy me and I don't even know what's happening. Training means a lot, anyone who doesn't think so is a colossal idiot.
