The "I'm Rick James" line actually originated from an appearance at the BET Awards on the BET (Black Entertainment Television) network. James was receiving a lifetime achievement award and ended his acceptance speech with, "And to the woman in the back who didn't know me, I'm Rick James, Bitch!" Edit: Enough. I misremembered the chronology because I'm old and probably saw the episode in reruns. I'll leave the original comment for the replies.

I love how Charlie makes a point to "elevate" his brother. Even after Eddie had become the hugest star in the world, here's his big brother, letting you know that Eddie is "a lot more compassionate," or that Eddie didn't fuck around with the party scene. And then it makes me just so fuckin SAD, because Charlie's not around anymore to be his little brother's biggest supporter. There's another true Hollywood Story from Charlie Murphy regarding a guy (whose name I will not reveal, but you can read Charlie's lips when he's telling the story) who got shit-faced drunk and forced his way into Eddie's home late one night. There's another story about Charlie and his crew lining up for hot dogs/franks outside of a club. And I don't know why we never see it, but there's a portion of Charlie's Rick James stories where he's hanging out at Rick's house all weekend, everyone's partying non-stop, and Rick got on the house intercom to announce that none of the women there were to have sex with Charlie Murphy, and they would be fired if they did. OH! And there was a story about Charlie and Eddie and Uncle Ray and the whole gang going out to a restaurant, and Darryl Stingley was there, and he started talking some shit. So Charlie had to go over there and straighten him out. I haven't seen THAT story since it aired.

I never forget when Rick James said that to a young lady back stage at the BET Awards.Thats how that saying became popular. She asked someone who he was? That pissed him off that she didnt know who he was. So when he got out on stage for an award he says " Yeah Im Rick James Bitch"! The audiance was shocked because they didnt know what had happened. Then everyone started to laugh.lol That was the talk of the town the next day.And I guess the rest is history.I may be missing a small bit of it but this is pretty much what happened 🤣🤣

Love some Charlie. Rest easy bro. For anyone who doesn't know, Charlie did martial arts for years and was even his brother"s body guard for some years. Think he mentioned it in the other skit. He also talked about it in an interview I watched. That's why that kick he did was so fluid.

I wasn't big on Rick James, but he was one of a kind, and a good musician...was just wild as hell.. that I'm Rick James bitch started when Rick got the Legend award at the BET awards...some girl that was working backstage didn't know who Rick was and he came out there and accepted the award...and said some young girl in the back didn't know who I was... I'm Rick James bitch....and the crowd erupted...yes he was something else

Good react, gents!! As others have said, there's one more portion to this story which is cut from the KZfaq version and I hope you guys have had a chance to watch it. 2 Years on but just an FYI: according to one of Charlie Murphy's stand up sets - the whole reason Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories became a segment, was because he'd be telling Chappelle and the people on the show these actual stories. And they'd all be laughing, hard. Then after a particular story Chappelle said: "Hey, we should make this into a sketch". Charlie's initial reaction was: "Sketch? Motherf***er this is my life, the f*** you mean a 'sketch'?!" Then Chappelle helped him flesh it out and Charlie Murphy realised: "My life is a sketch"

These depictions came about because Charlie Murphy was working on the show and would often tell these crazy stories during lunch times. Dave decided that they had to heard and who better to tell them than the man himself. Charlie lived a crazy life that's for sure!

So charlie murphy use to hang out with chappelle and during breaks they would listen to charlie talk about tons of wild stories from when eddie was at the top of his popularity. Like eddie wasn't just the best comedian, he was like the first major black comedian to be at the top, he had entourage from all realms of the planet. Religious, sports, politics all from the black side of america. charlie hung out with some amazing people in america's histroy.

Charlie Murphy was a writer on The Chappelle Show. He used to tell these stories onset to Dave Chappelle and Bill Burr who was also a writer on the show. Dave convinced Charlie to tell 2 of his stories for the show. His story from the Joe Rogan show about Mike Tyson wrestling his pet tiger is a another great story.

Right around that time (when Charlie was telling these stories) some friends of mine went to see him doing stand-up (or telling stories). The opening comic? Bill Burr. Prince put out a single and he used a photo of Dave as him for the cover. "Breakfast Can Wait" is the title.

Dude… Charlie Murphy’s is one of those guys who you hear crazy stories about but it’s all true. I think he’s next on the list of guys you guys need to take a deep dive on. He’s from the age of the Patrice O’Neal’s and Bill burrs of the world. He came up around the same time they did. Everyone has nothing but great stories about him. Truly one of the most under appreciated comics of our time imo.

Ah Rick James being from my hometown Buffalo NY made this clip extra legendary there. But to clarify, this would have been long before Dave's career took off. But he knows the stories because Charlie was a close friend and colleague.
