When Silent Spring was published in September 1962 it became an instant bestseller and would go on to spark dramatic changes in the way the government regulated pesticides.

I am in 5th grade and I read Rachel Carson I know her books like silent spring and those dangerous chemicals called pesticides bug killers she struggled either to be a writer or scientist when I grow up I will be just like her I want to be a scientist and she chose to be both writer and scientest like if you love Rachel Carson she saved the world from almost dying she saved humans and animals and life women of our time:Rachel Carson May 27 1907 to April 14 1964

Follow your dreams kid. We do need more scientists. Tell all your friends to become scientists. Need to save future of humanity! Keep reading as many knowledgeable books you can read. Lots of amazing books out there to read.

That's awesome. I am an adult now and read about her when I was in 2nd grade. It was an easier read of course, a biography for children to read. I never forgot her. I wanted to choose a woman I could look up to as a lover of nature. Amazing woman! Makes me happy you are now reading her books 😊

Because DDT stopped malaria in the South which killed thousands. Imagine today if malaria still ran rampant in the states coupled with increased average temperatures. We would have malaria in the entire country lmao.

@KingintheMountain i mean i had to literally write a 10,000 word paper on her that made me want to kill myself. Even the World Health Organization agrees that DDT is the best form of treatment against mosquitoes. It comes with its pros and cons, its not some dumb conspiracy theory made up by conservatives.

@@makoshark3082 That's certainly a point to make, but still doesn't invalidate the work Rachel did and the sacrifices she made. Now the world as whole is more aware of the dangers of chemical pesticides in general. Imagine the states today if we continued spraying DDT with no regard...

DDT led to the virtual annihilation of Kestrels in this area. It was sprayed to kill Grasshoppers. The problem Kestrels had with that is that Grasshoppers make up most of their diet. Then after they laid their eggs the shells were too think and were crushed by their parents when they were trying to hatch them.

@Vermonster90 Are you fucking kidding me? Did you even research the things you are saying? Most countries of Africa that suffer from these diseases did not even ban DDT and the mosquitoes there developed immunity, a thing that Rachel Carson WARNED us about... So, right now insects that carry the disease cannot even die from DDT... It does not only harm the environment but it is useless all together...

Yes. In 1960 she had already discovered a breast cancer. And in 1964 she died for the state of the cancer and heart attack :( It's curious.

6:30 Lolwut? Why does it matter if they 'want' to get sprayed? Regular folks are not scientists, and at the time all of the available evidence suggested that it was the best course of action. In this particular case, the initial scientific results turned out to be incorrect or misleading, but in general, the best course of action is to rely on available scientific evidence. The idea that people with no scientific or medical training should be making public health decisions over and above actual scientists is kind of silly and is the same sort of reasoning used by the antivaxx community.

Mr Will Ethylmercury is derived from the metabolism of thimerosal. It is far less toxic than methylmercury. In low doses, it is effectively nontoxic. Also, virtually no vaccines other than flu vaccines contain thimerosal.
